Defeating a recruitable enemy violently makes it Lost, blocking its recruitment even if it had joined earlier. Violence does give your party higher HP, Attack and Magic for the rest of that chapter, up to the game’s limit.
Deltarune does not impose one permanent pacifist-or-violent route across the entire game. Choices are evaluated chapter by chapter in a carried-over Completion FILE, so you can play one chapter peacefully and make different choices in another. The practical rule is to check the recruit counter before each chapter’s ending sequence and protect any named recruit requirement tied to a later scene.

How do your choices affect recruits?
Recruitment begins as a meaningful mechanic in Chapter 2. When an enemy is recruitable, resolving its encounter nonviolently advances the appropriate recruit counter. Once recruited, that Darkner moves to Castle Town and contributes to its population. The official gameplay reminder describes the result this way: “RECRUITing more enemies makes your town more lively and may unlock certain activities in your CASTLE TOWN.”
A violent defeat has the opposite long-term result. The recruitable enemy becomes Lost, so it cannot be recruited. This applies even when the enemy had already been recruited previously: a later violent encounter can remove that recruit from the available population. Because route outcomes and scene checks can change with game updates, treat the in-game counters and the current chapter’s requirements as the authority for your save.

The basic trade-off
| Choice | Recruitment and Castle Town | Immediate gameplay effect | Possible story effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Use ACT, then SPARE | Advances recruitment from Chapter 2 and can add a resident. | Requires the correct enemy-specific action and enough MERCY. | May satisfy later recruit checks and unlock town activities. |
| Make the enemy TIRED, then use PACIFY | Advances recruitment when the enemy is recruitable. | PACIFY requires at least 16% TP and a Tired target. | Preserves the same recruit-related possibilities as other nonviolent resolutions. |
| FIGHT and defeat a recruitable enemy | The enemy becomes Lost; recruitment is blocked. | Party HP, Attack and Magic rise for the remainder of that chapter, up to a cap. | Lost recruits and repeated violent encounters can alter later chapter scenes. |
This table describes the normal recruitable-enemy cases, not every battle in the game. Some bosses cannot be defeated by violence, some cannot be resolved nonviolently, and some encounters do not produce a recruit at all.
What happens when you spare or pacify an enemy?
SPARE: fill the MERCY meter
Use the enemy’s ACT options to expose its required condition. When MERCY reaches 100%, the target can be spared. A valid SPARE target is marked by a yellow name and a star in the battle interface. Select SPARE to end the encounter without a violent defeat.
ACT requirements are enemy-specific. One target may need a particular dialogue choice, another may need an action repeated, and another may become spareable after a party member uses a certain command. Read the battle text and watch the MERCY value rather than assuming that one action works on every enemy.

PACIFY: make the target TIRED
Ralsei’s PACIFY spell resolves a target that has become TIRED. The target is marked by a blue name and “Zz.” You need at least 16% TP to cast PACIFY. If the target is not Tired, PACIFY is not the correct resolution yet; continue using the relevant ACT or other nonviolent option.
In documented situations, ACT and SPARE or PACIFY can resolve on the same turn. This is useful when one character creates the condition and another finishes the encounter, but the exact available commands depend on the enemy and party state.
Shortening battles with party ACTs
Starting in the middle of Chapter 2, Susie and Ralsei gain a single ACT through their spell menus against each enemy. The official guide notes that these options can shorten battles. They are still subject to the encounter’s rules: an available spell-menu ACT does not mean every enemy can be recruited or spared.
What does violence give you, and what does it cost?
The temporary stat benefit
When the party violently defeats enemies, party HP, Attack and Magic increase for the rest of the current chapter, up to a limit. This is a short-term combat advantage, not a permanent whole-game upgrade. The bonus can make later fights in that chapter easier, which is the principal mechanical reason a player might accept a violent route.

For a recruitable enemy, the same violent defeat marks that character Lost. The loss is not repaired simply by later choosing peaceful actions. A previously recruited Darkner can also be removed if a later encounter turns violent. If a later scene needs that recruit, the requirement fails unless the game offers a chapter-specific recovery that is explicitly stated for that case.

Violent scenes are not limited to the stat screen
Route references describe scene differences after violent encounters, including the Chapter 1 flight from Card Castle and later scenes affected by Lost recruits or repeated violent battles. The exact trigger is chapter-specific; do not assume that one defeated enemy automatically selects every violent scene, or that a mostly peaceful chapter is equivalent to a fully pacifist one.
Why Chapter 1 works differently
Chapter 1 predates the later recruit system. You do not build a recruit roster there in the same way you do from Chapter 2 onward. Instead, Chapter 1 enemies are recruited by default when Chapter 2 begins.
The Card Kingdom outcome
In the pacifist Chapter 1 outcome, Card Kingdom Darkners help overthrow King. In the violent outcome, the party puts King to sleep and leaves without returning to Card Castle to say goodbye. That departure is a route distinction even though Chapter 1 does not yet use the later recruit counters.
Apologies and route recovery
The route reference describes apology opportunities involving certain Rudinn or Hathy characters. Under its stated conditions, apologizing can restore a pacifist Chapter 1 outcome if no other Darkners were defeated violently. This is conditional, not a universal undo button: once another qualifying violent defeat has occurred, the apology does not erase it.
What carries into Chapter 2
At the start of Chapter 2, the Chapter 1 Darkners appear as recruits by default. From that point forward, Chapter 2 encounters use the active recruitment rules, so a Chapter 1 ending should not be used as evidence that every later enemy will join automatically.
Chapter 2: the first full recruitment test
Chapter 2 is where nonviolent play directly changes Castle Town’s population. Every recruitable enemy that you spare or pacify contributes to progress, and the game provides feedback as those counters advance. If an enemy type requires several successful resolutions, one encounter may not complete the requirement; keep resolving that type peacefully until the counter is full.
How full recruitment changes Castle Town
Recruiting everyone in Chapter 2 has named effects in the town. The documented rewards include:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- The Party Dojo’s “Ch2 All Stars” challenge becomes available.
- Sweet Cap’n Cakes’s Music Room becomes available.
- An item sold by Seam changes.
These are concrete Chapter 2 outcomes, not a generic promise that the town will look busier. Partial recruitment can still populate Castle Town, but the named unlocks require the stated full-recruitment condition.

How to avoid losing a Chapter 2 recruit
- At the start of each new encounter, identify whether the enemy is one of the recruitable types.
- Use its ACT options or make it TIRED before selecting SPARE or PACIFY.
- Confirm the yellow-star SPARE marker or blue “Zz” PACIFY marker before ending the battle.
- Check the recruit counter at the chapter’s progress or save-point check location.
- Before the chapter-ending sequence, verify that every desired counter is complete rather than relying on a general pacifist label.
Chapter 3 and the Chapter 4 Tenna requirement
A specific Chapter 3 recruitment condition carries into Chapter 4. To have Tenna repaired in Chapter 4, the documented requirement is to recruit both Pippins and Shadowguys and to lose no Chapter 3 recruits through violence.
Why “mostly pacifist” is not enough
This is a named all-or-nothing check. Recruiting one of the two is insufficient, and a violent loss elsewhere in Chapter 3 can fail the requirement even if Pippins and Shadowguys were handled peacefully. If Tenna’s repair matters to your playthrough, keep every Chapter 3 recruit safe and confirm the counters before leaving the chapter.
Chapter 4 Dark Sanctuary scene
On a pacifist Chapter 4 route, recruiting at least one Darkner from the Dark Sanctuaries results in Darkners catching Jackenstein when he falls in the 3rd Sanctuary. This is another example of a chapter-specific scene check: the condition is not “have a perfect whole-game pacifist file,” but the stated Chapter 4 route plus the relevant Sanctuary recruitment.
How to check recruitment progress in-game
Use the Recruits menu and its counters at the relevant save point or chapter check location. Each chapter provides a way near its end to confirm whether all enemies have been recruited. The counters are more reliable than judging a route from memory, because a single recruitable type may require multiple successful encounters.
Check the counter that matters
- For a general Castle Town goal, verify every recruitable enemy counter in the chapter.
- For a named later scene, verify the exact character or group listed by that scene’s requirement.
- If a previously recruited character is shown as Lost, treat that loss as active; additional peaceful battles do not automatically restore the recruit.
- If a result seems inconsistent, consider whether the game has been updated, because route behavior can be version-sensitive.
The check is especially important when carrying a Completion FILE between chapters. The file can contain a peaceful Chapter 2 and a violent Chapter 3, or the reverse. Calling the entire save “pacifist” hides the chapter boundary that the game actually uses.
Can you still recruit enemies after a violent route?
You can still recruit eligible enemies that you have not made Lost, and you can choose peaceful resolutions in a later chapter. A violent choice does not permanently convert the entire Completion FILE into one unchangeable route. However, a recruitable enemy that was defeated violently remains Lost for the relevant save state, so later peaceful choices do not restore that particular recruitment.
This distinction creates three practical cases:
You were violent in an earlier chapter, peaceful now
You may pursue recruitment in the current chapter, subject to that chapter’s counters and requirements. The earlier chapter’s scenes and losses remain part of the carried-over file.
You spared an enemy, then defeated it violently later
The later violent encounter can make the recruit Lost. Check the current Recruits display instead of relying on the fact that the character joined previously.

You defeated one recruitable type, but not the others
Unlost recruitable types can still advance their own counters. A single loss does not make every enemy in the chapter unrecruitable, although it can fail a later requirement that demands a complete roster or a named character.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Route planning: choose by chapter, not by label
Use a chapter-by-chapter plan if you want both the combat benefits of violence and selected recruitment outcomes. Before making a choice, ask which of these goals has priority:
- Castle Town completion: resolve every recruitable encounter nonviolently and verify full counters.
- Chapter combat strength: accept the temporary HP, Attack and Magic increase, while identifying which recruitable enemies will become Lost.
- A named later scene: follow that scene’s exact character and chapter conditions; “mostly peaceful” is not a substitute.
- Exploration of route differences: keep separate Completion FILEs, because one file can preserve losses and scene flags that cannot be cleanly reversed.
Save management is particularly useful before an encounter involving a known recruit or before a chapter-ending check. It gives you a way to inspect the consequences without treating a later chapter’s recruit counter as proof that an earlier loss never happened.

Assuming every enemy can be recruited
Recruitment applies only to recruitable enemies. Boss rules are separate, and the official reminder explicitly notes that some bosses cannot be defeated by violence while others cannot be resolved nonviolently. If no recruit counter exists for a target, do not waste turns looking for a nonexistent recruitment result.
Selecting SPARE before the marker appears
A target that is not yellow with a star is not ready for SPARE. Continue the relevant ACT sequence until MERCY reaches 100%.
Trying PACIFY without enough TP
PACIFY needs at least 16% TP and a Tired target. If either condition is missing, generate TP or continue the encounter’s ACT sequence rather than treating PACIFY as a general-purpose escape.
Confusing chapter completion with a whole-game route
The standard pacifist and violent descriptions are useful shorthand, but the game can evaluate route outcomes by chapter. Record which chapter produced a loss and inspect the next chapter’s requirements separately.
Expecting a peaceful battle to undo a Lost result
Once a recruitable enemy is Lost, later nonviolent victories over other enemies do not restore it. If a required character is missing from the counter, reload an earlier save or use a separate Completion FILE rather than assuming the next encounter will repair the roster.

What the game’s own guidance says
“RECRUITing more enemies makes your town more lively and may unlock certain activities in your CASTLE TOWN.”
Official DELTARUNE gameplay reminder, attributed to Toby Fox
The game’s Chapter 1 dialogue also frames the nonviolent goal clearly: “If we SPARE all the enemies we meet, we’ll never have to FIGHT!” That line describes the intent of a peaceful approach, while the later recruit system adds measurable consequences through Castle Town counters and chapter-specific checks.

Chapters 1–5 are available according to the official site at the time of the information check on October 13, 2026. Route outcomes can be affected by game updates, so interface labels, scene checks or edge-case behavior may change. The rules above describe the documented mechanics and named consequences available at that date.
Do not automatically equate every unusual route, including Snowgrave or other Weird Route behavior, with ordinary FIGHT violence. The documented material does not establish all of those route’s recruitment interactions, so verify the specific route requirement in the current game rather than applying the normal violent-route rule wholesale.
A practical decision checklist
- Identify the encounter: Is this enemy recruitable, and does the current chapter have a counter for it?
- Choose the objective: Do you want a Castle Town resident, a named later scene, or the chapter’s temporary combat-stat increase?
- Resolve deliberately: Use the enemy’s ACT, reach 100% MERCY for SPARE, or make it TIRED and cast PACIFY with at least 16% TP.
- Confirm the result: Look for the correct battle marker and inspect the Recruits counter at the next check.
- Protect named requirements: For Chapter 4 Tenna repair, keep Pippins and Shadowguys recruited and lose no Chapter 3 recruits to violence.
- Separate files when experimenting: A later chapter can use a different route, but a Lost recruit and its related scene flags remain meaningful in the carried-over file.
The safest route for a full Castle Town and recruit-focused playthrough is nonviolence from Chapter 2 onward, with regular counter checks. A violent choice is viable when you value the chapter’s temporary stat increase or want to see its distinct scenes, but make it knowing exactly which recruit and later requirement you are giving up.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does defeating one recruitable enemy ruin the entire game route?
No. Route outcomes are chapter-specific. The defeated recruit becomes Lost and may fail a chapter-specific requirement, but eligible enemies in later chapters can still be recruited if they have not been made Lost.
