The term is often used when the person relies on the generated code without closely inspecting it. That makes oversight—not the particular tool—the key distinction between vibe coding and more carefully supervised AI-assisted development.
What does vibe coding mean?
In a typical vibe-coding workflow, a person explains a goal in natural language, asks an AI to generate or change code, then runs the result and iterates based on what happens. The person may inspect the output only lightly, especially when moving quickly or when they have limited programming experience.

Andrej Karpathy is credited with introducing the phrase in February 2025. The term remains informal: it is not a settled technical category with a single agreed definition. In practice, it is often used to describe a lower-oversight end of a wider range of AI-assisted programming. At the more supervised end, a developer plans the work, reviews generated changes, tests behavior, and takes responsibility for maintenance.

Why do people use vibe coding?
Fast exploration and prototyping
Conversational prompting can make it easier to try an idea, build a rough prototype, or explore alternatives without writing every line by hand. A 2026 review by Ahmed Fawzy, Amjed Tahir, and Kelly Blincoe found that 62% of the motivation units coded in its practitioner-account dataset concerned speed and efficiency. That figure describes coded units in a dataset of 101 sources and 518 behavioral units—not the percentage of developers who use vibe coding or prioritize speed.

Lower barriers to experimentation
The same review found that 14% of coded motivation units concerned accessibility and empowerment. AI can help people with less programming experience take part in software creation, but being able to produce a plausible result is not the same as being able to verify, secure, debug, or maintain it.
Microsoft Research’s September 2025 empirical study describes developers prompting an AI, scanning its output, testing the application, and sometimes switching to manual code edits. It also emphasizes that programming expertise remains useful for supplying context, judging output, and knowing when to stop prompting and work directly in code.

What are the risks of vibe coding?
Working software can still be wrong
An application that launches or displays the expected screen may still fail important cases, mishandle data, or behave incorrectly outside the example that was tried. The 2026 review of practitioner accounts describes quality assurance being skipped or delegated back to AI, alongside reliability and maintainability concerns. In that material, 19% of practitioners admitted their code was “fragile or error-prone.” This is a reported finding within grey literature, not a population-wide estimate.
Security and maintenance need human attention
Generated code can introduce risks that are not obvious from a quick demonstration. A 2026 paper in Proceedings of Machine Learning Research investigates vulnerabilities in agent-generated code on real-world tasks. Its existence supports treating security review as important; it does not establish a universal rate of vulnerability across all AI-generated code.
Review security-sensitive changes carefully, especially those involving dependencies, authentication, authorization, or data handling. Also consider whether someone can maintain the result after the initial prototype: unclear or fragile code can become expensive when requirements change or failures need diagnosis.
Missing context can compound errors
A qualitative study of 163 human-AI interaction episodes identified gaps in shared context, unsynchronized learning, declining trust, and error-expanding spirals. If an assistant misunderstands a project’s constraints, repeated prompts can build on the wrong assumption. The result may be more changes and more debugging rather than progress toward the actual requirement.

How to use AI coding tools without shipping broken code
- Define the goal and constraints. Write down what the software should do, what it must not do, and the assumptions that matter. Give the assistant relevant project context and update it when the design changes.
- Turn the goal into checks. Specify acceptance criteria for important behaviors, then run the software and test those behaviors. A plausible interface or successful launch is not evidence that the requirements are met.
- Review the generated changes. Read the code and understand what changed before accepting it. Pay particular attention to dependencies, authentication, authorization, and data handling.
- Debug the cause, not just the symptom. When something breaks, isolate the failure and verify that a proposed change fixes its cause. Check nearby behavior so a quick patch does not create a new problem elsewhere.
- Keep a decision trail. Record why a generated change was accepted, which checks passed, and which risks remain. The 2026 review recommends tests, code review, and traceable decision records before promoting work to production.
- Match the task to your ability to verify it. For consequential software, do not rely on an output you cannot evaluate. Bring in a qualified developer if you cannot judge whether the result is correct or safe.
When is vibe coding appropriate?
Vibe coding is most suitable when the cost of failure is low and the result is exploratory—for example, testing an idea or creating a disposable prototype. As the consequences of failure rise, increase planning, testing, code review, and maintenance oversight. The useful comparison is not a ranking of named tools; it is whether the workflow gives a person enough context and control to check the result and take responsibility for it.
