The figure is an analyst forecast for Steam’s estimated gross sales in 2026: Alinea Analytics estimated $16.5 billion in the first nine months and predicted the platform could exceed $20 billion for the full year. If Steam reaches that mark, Valve should use its success to strengthen the PC gaming ecosystem—not treat marketplace sales as a pot of money available to spend.
Is Valve really making $20 billion?
No confirmed Valve financial result establishes that. GamesRadar and Tom’s Hardware report Alinea Analytics’ estimate of $16.5 billion in Steam gross sales during the first nine months of 2026, alongside its forecast that Steam could surpass $20 billion for the full year. Those are an estimate and a projection, not audited company accounts or a final annual total. (GamesRadar; Tom’s Hardware)

“Gross sales” describes money spent through the marketplace before accounting for what the platform operator retains and for its costs. The estimate does not establish Valve’s commission total, profit, cash balance, or full corporate revenue. So the useful question is not how to spend $20 billion in Valve’s bank account, but what priorities would best serve gamers, developers, and the PC ecosystem if Steam’s marketplace continues to grow.

Rather than announce speculative dollar allocations, Valve should focus on investments whose benefits are clear to users and game makers. Three priorities stand out: trust and safety, developer opportunity, and access that keeps PC gaming open.

Make Steam safer and easier to use
Steam is a marketplace and community as well as a game library. Valve should keep improving account protection, fraud prevention, moderation, and the clarity of store and community controls. That would address a basic concern for players: being able to buy games, manage an account, and participate in the community with confidence. Better explanations of why content or accounts are moderated would also make platform rules easier to understand.
Give developers better tools and discovery
Valve should make it easier for studios—especially smaller teams—to understand how players find and engage with their games. Useful analytics, transparent store guidance, and discovery tools that help niche titles reach interested audiences would make Steam’s scale more valuable to developers, rather than simply making the storefront larger. The goal should be meaningful visibility, not a promise that every game will receive equal attention.

Keep access broad across the PC ecosystem
Hardware can make PC games available in more situations, but the strongest long-term approach is to pair hardware with broad software access. Valve’s Steam Deck is one example: Tom’s Hardware describes it as Valve hardware that provides portable access to most of a user’s Steam library. The wider principle is more important than any one device: players should be able to reach their games across a range of PCs and form factors, rather than being pushed into a single piece of hardware.
How should those priorities be judged?
Valve’s 2011 comments, quoted in a 2026 PC Gamer retrospective, offer historical context for a useful standard. Co-founder Gabe Newell said, “It’s a lot easier for me to think of it as having a responsibility to gamers and game developers,” and also discussed PC gaming’s openness and capacity for innovation. Those remarks are not a current spending commitment, but they point to questions that can guide future decisions:

- Operating System: SteamOS 3.0
- User benefit: Does the investment make gaming safer, more accessible, or easier to navigate?
- Developer opportunity: Does it help creators build games, reach relevant audiences, or understand their audiences?
- Open access: Does it strengthen PC gaming across devices and storefronts, rather than locking players into one device or service?
These are proposed evaluation criteria, not proof that a particular project would succeed. They help distinguish long-term ecosystem investment from spending that mainly reinforces a single product or platform.

A 2025 plaintiffs’ consolidated amended complaint alleged that Steam had more than $10 billion in gross revenue in 2024, nearly 2 billion accounts, and as many as 39 million concurrent users. The complaint also makes claims about Steam’s business terms, competition, investment, and security. These are allegations by plaintiffs, not court findings or independently confirmed financial statements. They should not be treated as proof of Valve’s current finances or as a settled account of the platform’s effects. (CourtListener)
Quick Recap
Rank #4
- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
