That alone does not give it your ChatGPT conversations, memories, files, billing information, or other ChatGPT account data. Any access beyond those identity details—such as permission to use a connected app or your ChatGPT plan—requires a separate authorization.
What the app receives when you sign in
OpenAI’s Help Center says: “For identity sign-in, the external application receives only your name, email address, and profile picture, if you have one.” Those details let the app identify your account and display basic profile information. The sign-in screen shows the identity information being shared, so review it before continuing. OpenAI Help Center: Sign in with ChatGPT

What identity sign-in does not share
Signing in does not independently give the external app access to your ChatGPT conversations or memory, files or tokens, billing information, or other ChatGPT account data. OpenAI’s developer documentation also distinguishes identity scopes from permissions to access conversations or OpenAI API resources. A stable account identifier may be part of the identity protocol, but that is not conversation or API access. OpenAI Help Center: Sign in with ChatGPT · OpenAI developer documentation: Authentication
Three separate permission layers
| Layer | Who receives or processes it | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Identity sign-in | The external app | Your name, email address, and profile picture if present. |
| Sign-in operation | OpenAI | Information needed to authenticate you, apply organization settings, complete authorization, and protect the flow. |
| Additional authorization | The external app or participating app, as described in the consent prompt | Specific connected data or actions, or optional use of your eligible ChatGPT plan. These are separate from basic identity sign-in. |
What OpenAI processes during sign-in
OpenAI may process account identifiers, your email address, authentication provider, and selected workspace or organization. It may also process the app’s identifier, requested and approved permissions, the authorization decision and outcome, and technical or security details such as request or session identifiers, IP address, inferred location, browser or app version, user agent, device identifiers, and security signals. This describes OpenAI’s processing to run and protect sign-in; it is not a list of information sent to the external app. OpenAI Help Center: Sign in with ChatGPT

When an app asks for additional access
An app may separately ask to use particular connected data or perform specific actions. You may also see an option to let an eligible participating app use your ChatGPT plan for supported requests. These grants are not included automatically just because you used Sign in with ChatGPT. Optional plan use does not itself give the app access to your conversations or memories, and it does not share your API key. OpenAI Help Center: Using your ChatGPT plan with apps · OpenAI developer documentation: Authentication
- Read the consent screen for each requested permission, not just the identity details.
- Check what data or action the permission covers and whether it is optional.
- If you use a work or school account, organization settings may affect which apps or permissions are available.
Organization approval is not your personal consent
An organization administrator can manage app permissions in Admin Console under External access, including allow/deny policies and approved-application lists. Admin approval can make delegated access available, but it does not authorize an individual member to use it on its own: the member must still complete the authorization, subject to the organization’s settings. How to disconnect an app and request deletion
- In ChatGPT, open Settings → Security and login → Login connections and look for the app connection. Disconnect it if that control is available. OpenAI Help Center: Sign in with ChatGPT
- If a sign-in-only connection has no Disconnect control, sign out of your account in the external app to end that app session.
- To remove information the app already received, use its own account or data controls, or contact the app’s provider. Disconnecting does not by itself erase data already delivered to the app. OpenAI Help Center: Sign in with ChatGPT
Availability can vary
OpenAI says identity sign-in is globally available to authenticated users, including enterprise users, and is rolling out across select partner sites and plugins. Use depends on the app and, for optional plan use, the user’s plan and the app’s eligibility. Partner participation, available permissions, and settings can change, so rely on the current sign-in screen and account settings rather than assuming every app offers the same options.
