For most apps choosing an identity provider available to developers generally, support Google Sign-In first. Google provides developer documentation and Google Identity Services for website sign-in. Sign in with ChatGPT may be a useful additional option, but OpenAI’s website identity integration is currently available only to selected commercial partners through a limited trial, according to documentation reviewed October 4, 2026.
These options both let users authenticate with an existing account, but they are not interchangeable product integrations. In particular, ChatGPT identity sign-in does not give an app access to a user’s conversations or OpenAI API resources. A separate OpenAI integration can let eligible users authorize use of their ChatGPT plan for eligible AI requests; that is a distinct permission flow, not a benefit automatically included with sign-in.

Which provider should your app support?
Choose Google first when you need a generally available option
For a typical consumer or business website that needs third-party identity sign-in, Google is the practical first choice: its web sign-in integration is documented for developers generally, and returning users may be able to sign in automatically or with one tap or click. That describes the documented sign-in experience, not a guarantee of higher conversion or a particular security outcome.

Add ChatGPT sign-in when access and product fit justify it
Consider ChatGPT identity sign-in if OpenAI has granted your organization access and your users have a clear reason to use their ChatGPT account with your app. Because the website flow is a limited trial for selected commercial partners, do not make it a launch dependency unless your eligibility and integration access are confirmed.

If your product’s goal is to let eligible ChatGPT Plus or Pro users try an AI feature using their existing plan instead of configuring an API key, evaluate OpenAI’s separate plan-usage flow. Users choose whether to grant that permission and can manage app access and usage in ChatGPT settings. This capability is not the same as creating an account with ChatGPT identity, and availability and eligibility differ by integration type.
Support both only when the extra path is worth maintaining
Offering two identity providers can give users a choice, but it also means your app must handle duplicate identities, linking and unlinking, recovery, and session management across both. Provider count alone is not a reason to add another sign-in button; weigh the user need against the extra account-policy and support work.

What signing in with ChatGPT does—and does not—authorize
OpenAI’s documented identity flow uses OAuth 2.0 Authorization Code with PKCE and OpenID Connect. Identity scopes can supply a stable account identifier and available profile claims. They do not authorize an app to read ChatGPT conversations or access OpenAI API resources. A separate ChatGPT plan-use integration requests its own scopes and requires the user’s authorization for eligible AI requests.

How to add website sign-in
Sign in with ChatGPT
- Confirm eligibility. OpenAI’s website identity flow is currently a limited trial for selected commercial partners. Treat it separately from its open-source plan-usage flow and access for selected private clients.
- Register the integration. Configure an OAuth client and register the exact callback URL for each environment, such as development and production. A mismatch between the registered callback and the URL used by the app can prevent the authorization flow from completing.
- Implement the server-side flow. Use Authorization Code with PKCE and OpenID Connect. Keep short-lived transaction state on the backend, exchange the authorization code there, and validate the returned ID token against OpenAI’s issuer and client information.
- Create or link an app account. Associate the verified issuer, client ID, and subject (
sub) with the app’s account record. Do not treat a matching email address by itself as proof that two accounts belong to the same person. - Issue your own session. After verification, create the application’s session and apply your own authorization rules. The provider’s ID token is not a replacement for your app’s session.
Google Sign-In
- Set up Google credentials. Create or use a Google Cloud project, configure credentials, and register the redirect URIs required for your site and environments.
- Use Google Identity Services. Follow Google’s current website sign-in guidance rather than building on older sign-in APIs that Google labels legacy.
- Validate the identity token. Verify the token on the server before relying on its claims. For a server authorization flow, follow Google’s guidance on anti-forgery state checks.
- Create or link an app account and issue an app session. Apply your account policy after validation; do not use the third-party token as the app’s own session credential.
For either provider, use a maintained OAuth or OpenID Connect library where possible. Authentication has security implications, and implementation details such as token validation, transaction state, session issuance, and recovery belong in the app’s design—not in assumptions about the sign-in button.

Decide in advance what happens when someone signs in with a provider for the first time, when the verified identity already exists, or when an email appears to match an account created another way. A safe linking path asks a user who is already signed in to confirm the additional provider; an email match on its own is not sufficient proof of ownership.

Also keep authentication separate from resource authorization. For Google, request API scopes only when the product needs access to the corresponding Google resources. For ChatGPT, identity scopes do not confer plan-use permission; that requires its own authorization flow. Your app remains responsible for account creation, session handling, authorization, enterprise sign-in policy, and any access to connected resources.
