On a USB-C cable display or inline meter, volts (V) show electrical potential at the meter, amps (A) show current flowing at that moment, and watts (W) show power. For a DC USB connection, watts are approximately volts multiplied by amps: a hypothetical 9 V and 2 A would equal about 18 W. These are live readings of the current connection—not a cable’s maximum rating or a certification.
What do volts, amps, and watts mean on a USB-C display?
- Volts (V): Voltage is electrical potential measured at the meter’s location. USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) may negotiate a different operating voltage, so the displayed value can change. Voltage at the device end can also differ because of cable and connection losses; the amount depends on the setup.
- Amps (A): Current is the flow of charge through the connection under the present load. It depends on what the device draws and what the negotiated connection permits. A live amp reading is not the cable’s maximum current rating.
- Watts (W): Power is the rate of energy transfer. For a DC USB connection, calculate it approximately as W = V × A. A meter that displays watts may calculate them from its voltage and current readings; rounding and measurement behavior can make the displayed figure differ slightly from a hand calculation.
Why does the USB-C reading change?
The screen reports operating conditions at that moment, and those conditions can change as USB-PD negotiates power or the device’s demand and charge management change. USB-PD can establish a higher voltage than a basic 5 V connection; when voltage or current changes, the wattage can change too. A changing reading alone does not establish that anything is faulty.

USB-IF describes USB Power Delivery as flexible power delivery over USB Type-C. Its overview says PD Revision 3.1 supports up to 240 W, with fixed voltage levels of 28 V for up to 140 W, 36 V for up to 180 W, and 48 V for up to 240 W. These are standard capability figures, not expected readings for every charger, cable, or device. The same overview describes earlier PD as limited to 100 W in a 20 V, 5 A arrangement. USB-IF’s USB Power Delivery overview also explains adjustable voltage: “An adjustable voltage supply mode allows the device being powered an ability to request intermediate voltages between 15V and up to the maximum available fixed voltage of the charger.”

For current revision context, the USB-IF document library, accessed October 4, 2026, lists USB Power Delivery Specification Revision 3.2 Version 1.2 dated September 14, 2026, as well as a USB-PD compliance test specification dated May 31, 2026. The Revision 3.1 overview figures above explain capability examples; they are not a claim that Revision 3.1 is the latest specification.

Does a live reading tell you a cable’s maximum power rating?
No. A live display shows what the connection is doing, not the maximum power capability of the cable, charger, or device. A low reading may simply mean the device is drawing less than the connection could support. A high reading does not, by itself, verify the cable’s rating, data capability, or compliance status.
USB-IF says USB-C-to-USB-C cable categories must carry a 60 W or 240 W power marking to pass through its compliance program; relevant categories also have separate data-rate markings. Those markings communicate capability and program compliance, not the power currently flowing. See USB-IF’s cables and connectors information for its marking context.

Some supported readers can report electronically advertised cable information stored in an e-marker. That is separate from measuring live voltage and current, and reading a marker is not an independent test of real-world performance.
How should you use a USB-C power meter?
An inline USB-C power meter or USB-PD tester lets you observe voltage and current in a connection; some models also display watts. PassMark’s USB Power Delivery Tester Users Guide discusses measuring volts and amps with a tester. It does not establish the accuracy, insertion loss, protocol compatibility, or maximum range of every meter.

When choosing or interpreting a meter, check its own specifications for:
- Maximum voltage and current range.
- Support for the USB-PD modes relevant to your charger and device.
- Whether it displays watts or requires you to calculate them from V × A.
- Stated measurement accuracy and display resolution.
- Connector arrangement and pass-through behavior.
- Whether it reads e-marker information as well as measuring live power.
Use the meter as an observation tool, not as a cable certification device. For formal compliance work, distinguish consumer meters from USB-IF compliance test equipment; USB-IF publishes dedicated Type-C and Power Delivery compliance materials and points to testing solutions through its compliance information.

What to check if charging seems wrong
A meter reading is one clue, not a diagnosis. Compare what it shows with the device’s charging behavior, the charger’s capabilities, the cable’s markings and specifications, and a suitable meter’s documented range and accuracy. If the display fluctuates, that may reflect negotiation or changing demand; the display alone cannot identify the cause of a charging problem.
