US-CERT stands for United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team. It was a U.S. government cyber-response and information-sharing capability. The name is now historical as a CISA brand: CISA says it retired the US-CERT brand in 2019 as it unified capabilities.

What did US-CERT do?

A U.S. Department of Homeland Security and CISA report describing the 2012 context called US-CERT a “24×7 operational entity” focused on collecting and analyzing data and sharing information with federal agencies, state and local partners, and domestic and international organizations. That describes the team at the time of the report; it is not evidence of current operating hours or services. US-CERT Security Trends Report

A 2010 DHS publication described US-CERT as providing response support and defense against cyberattacks for Federal Civilian Executive Branch (.gov) networks, while working with state and local government, industry, and international partners. This is a historical description of its role and scope, not current contact or service guidance. DHS publication (2010)

Is US-CERT still a CISA organization?

CISA’s organizational timeline says that in 2019 it unified capabilities and retired the US-CERT and ICS-CERT brands. CISA organizational timeline The evidence supports describing US-CERT as a historically important name and capability; it does not establish that US-CERT remains a standalone CISA unit or public-facing brand.

The acronym still appears in later CISA materials. For example, a March 2025 CISA reference framework lists US-CERT as “United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team.” That listing confirms the acronym’s expansion, but does not show that a separate organization remains active. What should you remember?

  • US-CERT means United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team—not “Response.”
  • Its historical role included cyber response, defense, and information sharing; the specific scope and operating description above belong to dated sources.
  • Its brand status changed when CISA retired the US-CERT brand in 2019. An acronym’s continued appearance in reference material is not proof of a current standalone unit.
