For one YouTube stream, plan for an available upload speed at least 25% above its encoder bitrate: YouTube recommends 20% headroom. For example, a 1080p30 H.264 stream at YouTube’s recommended 14 Mbps bitrate needs about 17.5 Mbps of upload capacity for the stream. Check your plan’s typical upload speed in your area and test the connection where the encoder will run; a download-speed headline or one speed test cannot guarantee a stable 24/7 broadcast.
Calculate the upload speed for your stream
First choose the resolution, frame rate, and codec, then set the encoder bitrate using YouTube’s live encoder guidance. YouTube advises keeping the total stream bitrate within available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% headroom. To calculate a simple upload target, divide the stream bitrate by 0.8 (or multiply by 1.25).
The targets below apply that calculation to YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrates. They are arithmetic estimates, not separate YouTube requirements, and assume the stated capacity is available to the stream.

For a single 1080p30 stream, the codec changes the calculation: the recommended AV1/H.265 bitrate produces a 12.5 Mbps target, while H.264 produces a 17.5 Mbps target. Add capacity if other people or devices use the connection, if uploads run at the same time, or if you send additional streams.

Choose an Indian broadband plan by upload speed
Compare the typical upload speed for the exact plan and service area, not just the advertised download tier. TRAI says it does not prescribe a minimum broadband download or upload speed; providers must indicate typical speeds in tariff offerings. TRAI directs consumers to its MySpeed app or portal to measure connection speed. See the regulator’s BroadBand guidance.
Provider examples do not establish what every customer can get. Airtel’s broadband page lists advertised plan speeds and notes that some plans are available only in select geographies, but the cited page does not state upload speed for every tier: Airtel Broadband Plans. Jio’s comparison page includes an example plan with 30 Mbps upload and 30 Mbps download; that is a provider example, not a nationwide guarantee: Jio Fiber Plans Comparison. Check current terms for your address before choosing.

Test the connection you will actually stream from
- Set the encoder target. Choose resolution, frame rate, and codec, then select the recommended bitrate from YouTube’s table.
- Reserve headroom. Keep at least 20% above the total bitrate being sent available for the stream.
- Check and measure upload. Look up the plan’s typical upload speed and test the outbound connection at the place the encoder will run. Repeat at different times if results vary.
- Use Ethernet for a computer setup where practical. YouTube recommends a wired connection; it can address a weak local link between computer and router, but it cannot increase the capacity supplied by the ISP.
- Test realistic content and usage. Run a test with audio and representative video movement, while accounting for household use and concurrent uploads or streams.
- Watch YouTube stream health. If YouTube reports connection problems or the stream cannot sustain its target, lower the bitrate, resolution, or frame rate and test again.
YouTube recommends a speed test to check upload bitrate and advises monitoring the broadcast. Its encoder settings and streaming tips are the primary references for the settings and connection checks.
What changes when the stream runs 24/7?
YouTube’s cited guidance does not prescribe a special upload-speed multiplier for a 24/7 stream. Start with the same bitrate-plus-headroom calculation, but treat it as a minimum planning target rather than a guarantee of day-long stability. A continuous broadcast also depends on a connection that remains usable under real household demand, as well as power continuity and monitoring.

A speed test is a snapshot, not proof that the connection will remain steady all day. If the upload rate fluctuates or other users share capacity, leave more room than the basic calculation or choose a lower stream bitrate. Keep track of YouTube’s stream-health messages during operation.
Single stream versus simulstreaming
If the encoder sends separate concurrent streams to multiple destinations, add their target bitrates to find the combined outgoing bitrate. YouTube recommends aiming for upload speed 1.5–2 times that combined total for simulstreaming, especially on a shared connection. This is guidance for multiple concurrent streams; it is not the rule for a single stream, where YouTube recommends 20% headroom. See YouTube’s guidance on streaming across platforms.
