How to Set Up a YouTube Podcast Live Stream with FFmpeg in India

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can stream a podcast to YouTube from India with FFmpeg by creating an event in YouTube Studio, copying its RTMPS ingest URL and private stream key, then sending FFmpeg a compatible audio/video feed. For a compatibility-first standard-definition-color (SDR) setup, use H.264 video, AAC stereo audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube’s general encoder guidance applies; the official instructions do not specify a separate India-specific FFmpeg configuration.

Before you start: check channel eligibility

YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance says your channel must be verified, must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the creator must be at least 16. Check access in YouTube Studio before planning the broadcast. These are platform eligibility conditions, not FFmpeg settings.

Create the YouTube event and get the stream key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and select Create → Go Live.
  2. In Live Control Room, use the Stream tab to create or select the podcast event. Set up a scheduled event ahead of time if you want its watch page ready before the broadcast.
  3. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that event. Choose the RTMPS URL when YouTube provides it; RTMPS encrypts the connection between your encoder and YouTube.
  4. Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: do not include it in a public script, screenshot, repository, or message. Anyone with access to the key may be able to send a feed to your event.

YouTube’s Live Control Room supplies the account- and event-specific endpoint and key. Do not assume a public example server URL is the right destination for your stream.

Choose compatible audio, video, and bitrate settings

YouTube’s current general encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video. H.264 with AAC stereo is a straightforward compatibility-first choice for SDR. YouTube recommends CBR, square pixels, progressive scan, and Rec. 709 color for SDR. Its audio guidance specifies stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
H.264 output Minimum video bitrate Recommended video bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These are the video ingest bitrates in YouTube’s current H.264 table, accessed 2026-10-03; the page does not state a publication date. They are not a measured speed requirement for any particular Indian internet connection. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom above the stream bitrate. Choose a resolution and frame rate your computer can encode and your measured outbound connection can sustain, allowing for other people and devices using the network. If you send a backup stream, allow for the combined primary and backup bitrate plus headroom.

For keyframes, YouTube recommends an interval of two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. At 30 frames per second, a 60-frame GOP gives a two-second interval. A slower computer may struggle with software encoding at higher resolutions; reducing resolution or frame rate can be a better trade-off than choosing a bitrate your connection cannot sustain.

Send a prerecorded video as the podcast picture

This example sends a local video file as a real-time feed at 720p, 30 fps, with H.264 video at 4.5 Mbps and stereo AAC audio at 128 kbps. Replace the input filename and output string with your actual file and the exact RTMPS URL plus stream key from Live Control Room. Keep the key private wherever you store or run the command.

ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
  -f flv 'RTMPS_URL_WITH_STREAM_KEY_FROM_YOUTUBE'
  • -re paces a file input in real time. It is not a general requirement for live camera or capture-device sources.
  • -g 60 and -keyint_min 60 set a 60-frame GOP at 30 fps, equivalent to a two-second keyframe interval. The scene-cut setting helps keep keyframe spacing predictable.
  • -b:v sets the target video bitrate; -maxrate and -bufsize constrain rate variation. The example’s 4.5 Mbps lies within YouTube’s current H.264 720p30 range.
  • -pix_fmt yuv420p produces a widely compatible pixel format. The output uses H.264 and AAC in an FLV container for RTMP-family ingest.

FFmpeg’s RTMP protocol documentation demonstrates real-time pacing with -re and FLV output. If FFmpeg reports that the libx264 encoder is missing, that build may not include it. Check the encoders available in your installed build or choose an available encoder supported by YouTube; do not assume every FFmpeg package includes libx264.

Use a microphone and camera instead of a prerecorded file

A direct capture command depends on your operating system, FFmpeg build, audio backend, device names, and hardware, so there is no single portable command to copy. First identify the correct microphone, audio interface, and camera or capture-device inputs for your system. Check that the microphone level is clear without clipping, and confirm that speech stays synchronized with the picture. Then use the same compatible output requirements: an accepted video codec and frame rate, AAC stereo audio, a two-second keyframe interval, and an upload bitrate your connection can sustain.

Preflight the podcast and go live

  1. Start the encoder early enough for the feed to reach Live Control Room. Test representative speech, expected movement, and any music or other audio you plan to use.
  2. Inspect the Live Control Room preview. Confirm YouTube receives both audio and video, speech is intelligible, levels do not clip, and the image behaves as expected.
  3. Compare the stream bitrate plus YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom with your measured upload capacity. Account for other network users and traffic.
  4. Check stream health, then open the viewer-facing watch page on a phone or another device to confirm what the audience will see and hear.
  5. For a scheduled broadcast, wait for the preview to appear and select Go live in Live Control Room when you are ready. Monitor audio, picture, and stream health during the podcast.
  6. When finished, end the event in YouTube and stop the encoder. YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours; that guidance is not a guarantee of archive retention in every account circumstance.

Fix common FFmpeg and YouTube problems

  • No feed appears in Live Control Room: check that you copied the URL and key for the correct event, that the key was not altered, and that your FFmpeg build can connect over the supplied RTMPS endpoint.
  • FFmpeg says the encoder is unavailable: the installed build may lack libx264. Check its available encoders or use an encoder supported by YouTube that is present in your build.
  • Video stutters or stream health degrades: compare the outgoing bitrate with measured upload capacity, including the 20% headroom recommendation and network use by other devices. If needed, lower the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate.
  • Audio is missing, too quiet, or distorted: verify the selected input device and channel mapping, test speech levels before going live, and check that the output is AAC stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.
  • Audio and video drift out of sync: test the actual capture devices and FFmpeg inputs in advance; device timing and capture configuration vary by operating system and hardware.
  • The feed works but the event is not public: check the event’s settings and use the Live Control Room preview and Go live control for a scheduled broadcast.

Copyright and podcast content checks

Use only music, clips, images, and other material you have the rights or permission to broadcast. Test with the actual planned audio rather than a silent placeholder: rights issues can involve material other than the spoken podcast. A successful encoder connection does not establish that your content complies with YouTube’s rules. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-streaming requirements before the event.
