For a YouTube lecture stream at 1080p and 30 fps using H.264, plan for at least about 17 Mbps of available upload: YouTube recommends a 14 Mbps video bitrate and 20% upload headroom. At 720p and 30 fps, plan for about 10 Mbps, based on an 8 Mbps video bitrate. These are baselines, not uptime guarantees; allow extra capacity if the connection is shared or fluctuates.
Why a 24/7 stream does not need a special speed multiplier
The upload requirement is determined by the stream’s bitrate, not by how many hours it runs. A stream that runs continuously sends data at its chosen bitrate throughout the broadcast, so the key question is whether the connection can sustain that bitrate reliably.

YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. The figures below apply that margin to YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrates. They are minimum planning baselines; other network use and upload variation call for additional capacity.
Upload speed baselines by resolution and frame rate
| Ingest resolution and frame rate | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate | Upload baseline with 20% headroom |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 16.8 Mbps (about 17 Mbps) |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 20.4 Mbps (about 21 Mbps) |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 9.6 Mbps (about 10 Mbps) |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 9.6 Mbps (about 10 Mbps) |
| 480p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 4.8 Mbps (about 5 Mbps) |
The headroom figures are calculated by multiplying the listed video bitrate by 1.2. They do not include additional allowance for other devices or people using the same internet connection. These are broadcaster ingest settings; YouTube transcodes live streams for viewers, so the broadcaster does not upload the combined bandwidth consumed by the audience.

Choose a lecture setting your connection can sustain
Start with the content and available upload
Compare your measured upload capacity with the bitrate for the resolution and frame rate you intend to use. For a lecture dominated by slides or screen sharing, prioritize legible text; a camera-heavy presentation may benefit more from motion detail. There is no universal best resolution for every lecture, and the figures above do not establish one.
Include all stream traffic
If you send a primary and backup stream or otherwise run multiple outputs, account for their combined upload demand. On a home, campus, or office connection, the streaming device may not receive the full advertised upload rate because other people and devices share the service.

Lower settings rather than outrunning the connection
If available upload cannot support the chosen bitrate plus headroom, reduce the resolution or bitrate, or use a more reliable connection with adequate upload capacity. Setting an encoder bitrate above what the connection can sustain can lead to interruptions rather than better delivered quality.
Test the actual connection and stream before relying on it
- Measure outbound upload. Use a speed test that reports upload, not just download. YouTube notes that download speed is often faster than upload.
- Compare the result with your settings. Check that available upload exceeds the total stream bitrate by at least YouTube’s recommended 20% margin. Leave more room when the connection is shared or variable.
- Run a representative test stream. Test with audio and movement similar to the lecture you plan to broadcast. YouTube advises testing before starting.
- Monitor stream health while live. A favorable speed-test result is only a snapshot, not proof of continuous reliability. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream.
YouTube’s cited guidance does not prescribe a special test duration or promise uptime for a 24/7 broadcast. Test the complete setup before depending on it and continue monitoring stream health. A wired Ethernet connection can be a practical local-network option if both the streaming device and router have compatible ports, but it cannot increase the upload speed provisioned by your internet service.
