If your audio and video files already play, you usually do not need to install anything. Ubuntu media codecs are format-specific software components that decode the streams inside files; a filename extension or container does not guarantee that the required decoder is available. Install additional support only when a particular format, device, search index, or encrypted DVD requires it. DVD playback is a separate problem because commercial discs can require decryption software, a compatible optical drive, and attention to local law.
What a media codec is
A codec is software that encodes or decodes a particular audio or video stream. When you open a movie or song, the player must identify the stream and hand it to a compatible decoder. The file container—such as the wrapper represented by an extension—does not tell you everything about the streams inside it. Two files with the same extension can use different codecs, while a single file can contain separate audio and video codecs.

That is why “install every codec” is a poor troubleshooting strategy. Support is format-specific and also depends on the application, Ubuntu release, and sometimes the graphics hardware. Ubuntu’s GStreamer test plan uses HEVC/H.265 as an example of a format that may trigger a codec-installation wizard; it is not an exhaustive compatibility list for every player or release.

Do you actually need extra codecs?
Use the result you see, not a generic checklist. If your normal files play with sound and picture, there is no codec task to perform. Additional software becomes relevant only when a specific use case exposes a gap.

| What you are trying to do | What the symptom means | Appropriate next step |
|---|---|---|
| Play files that already work | Your player already has a compatible decoder | Leave the installation unchanged |
| Play one file or format that fails | The player may lack a decoder for the actual stream, or the file may be damaged | Identify the format, test another file, and follow the player’s codec prompt if it offers one |
| Play HEVC/H.265 media | This popular format can require an installation wizard in Ubuntu’s tested playback path | Accept the player’s codec-installation option only after checking what it will add |
| Use a supported Bluetooth headset that needs AAC | Optional media support may be missing from the base installation | Use Ubuntu’s third-party software option or the release-appropriate package |
| Search or index audio and video rather than play it | Playback support and file-indexing support are different functions | Install the LocalSearch extractor package for the task |
| Play a commercial DVD | Encryption and regional restrictions can block playback even when ordinary codecs are installed | Use the separate DVD workflow and check your legal rights |
What Ubuntu supplies by default
Ubuntu’s distribution policy emphasizes completely free software in the default installation. Some proprietary or otherwise restricted media formats therefore are not configured out of the box. Ubuntu Community Help identifies ubuntu-restricted-extras as an easy-install route for stock Ubuntu, while Ubuntu flavors can use different package names. Community instructions are useful background, but package availability should be checked against the release and flavor actually installed.
Recent Ubuntu releases also expose an installer choice rather than requiring you to discover every package yourself. The Ubuntu 26.04 LTS release notes label it Install third-party software for graphics and Wi-Fi hardware and additional media formats. The notes specifically say that this set includes a non-free AAC codec for supported Bluetooth headsets. The optional-codec package update was added in version 25.10. Selecting the option does not mean every possible codec is enabled, and it cannot guarantee that every file will play.
If you install stock Ubuntu without that option, you can add the documented extras package later. A typical package operation is:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
sudo apt update
sudo apt install ubuntu-restricted-extras
Use this only on a stock Ubuntu installation where that package is available. Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, and other flavors can publish different package groupings; do not substitute the stock package name without checking the flavor’s current documentation. A package group also cannot repair a corrupt media file or solve DVD encryption.
Playback codecs and search indexing are separate
Ubuntu 26.04 distinguishes playing a file from extracting information so the desktop can find it. For LocalSearch to index audio and video files, ISO files, and certain zip-compressed office files, the release notes list these optional packages:

Those packages enable indexing and extraction tasks. They are not a general instruction to install codecs for playback. If a song plays but does not appear in a desktop search, investigate the extractor package rather than changing the player’s decoder stack.
Diagnose a file that will not play
Work from the narrowest explanation to the broadest. This avoids changing a working system when only one stream or one application is affected.
- Identify the actual stream format. Do not rely only on the filename extension. Use the player’s media-information view or the file’s metadata to determine the audio and video codecs, if available.
- Try a known-good file. If another file plays in the same application, the failure may be limited to the original file, its codec, or its container. If nothing plays, investigate the player installation, audio output, and system configuration before adding packages.
- Read the application’s codec prompt. Ubuntu’s GStreamer test plan uses an HEVC sample to exercise this path. A prompt can identify the missing support more precisely than a blanket package install. Review the proposed component and confirm it matches your Ubuntu release.
- Separate a format problem from a disc problem. For a DVD, missing codec support is only one possibility. Ubuntu’s help topics also identify copy protection and DVD region as causes.
- Consider acceleration only after decoding works. Hardware-accelerated paths are separate from basic format support. The GStreamer test plan has distinct VA-API and Vulkan checks for Intel and AMD systems and separate NVIDIA examples. Results depend on the hardware, driver, application, and selected rendering path.
- Install only what the identified task requires. Package names and extras groups can differ by Ubuntu release and flavor. Check the current package information for your installation before accepting an older command copied from a forum.
When a codec prompt appears
A prompt is useful when it names the missing format and offers a package from Ubuntu’s repositories. It is not proof that the resulting installation supports every other format. Read the description, note whether the component is free or restricted, and consider whether the file is a one-off download or part of your regular workflow.
If the prompt does not appear, that does not prove that no decoder exists. The application may not support automatic discovery, may use a different multimedia framework, or may be failing for a non-codec reason. Compare the same file in another known-supported application only as a diagnostic step; a different result indicates an application or framework difference, not necessarily a system-wide missing package.
Why DVDs need a different workflow
Ubuntu Help states: “DVD support cannot be provided by default in Ubuntu due to legal and technical restrictions.” Commercial DVDs are commonly encrypted, so installing an ordinary audio or video decoder does not by itself make them playable. You also need a computer with an optical drive, a player that can read DVD navigation data, and software capable of handling the disc’s encryption where legally permitted.

Ubuntu’s documented package set for this workflow names:
libdvdnav4libdvdread8gstreamer1.0-plugins-badgstreamer1.0-plugins-uglylibdvd-pkg
On a release that provides these package names, the installation sequence documented by Ubuntu Help can be expressed as:
sudo apt install libdvdnav4 libdvdread8 gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly libdvd-pkg
sudo dpkg-reconfigure libdvd-pkg
When the reconfiguration step asks for confirmation, Ubuntu Help instructs users to confirm installation of libdvdcss2. The exact package availability can change with the Ubuntu release, so check the package manager’s result rather than forcing a package from a different release.
Ubuntu’s page cautions that use of the unlicensed decryption software may not be permitted in some countries. Laws vary by jurisdiction and by how the disc and software were obtained. Verify that you are within your rights before installing or using decryption software; do not treat the package procedure as universal legal advice.
DVD hardware, regions, and copy protection
A codec package cannot make a computer read a disc when there is no optical drive. If the computer lacks one, an external USB DVD drive can provide the physical reading hardware. It does not install codecs, remove encryption, change a disc region, or settle legal restrictions.

Region settings and copy protection are separate failure modes. A disc can be readable at the hardware level yet refuse playback because its region does not match the drive or because the application cannot handle its protection scheme. Diagnose those conditions independently instead of repeatedly reinstalling general media packages.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Basic decoding versus GPU acceleration
First establish that the application can decode the format in software. Only then investigate stuttering, high processor usage, or a black window as an acceleration issue. Ubuntu’s GStreamer test documentation separates VA-API and Vulkan checks for Intel and AMD graphics from NVIDIA examples, indicating that the correct path is hardware-dependent. A passing test in that documentation is not a guarantee for an individual computer.
Check the application’s own hardware-acceleration setting and the graphics driver selected for your Ubuntu release. If disabling acceleration makes a known-supported file play reliably, the format decoder is probably present and the remaining issue is the accelerated rendering path. Conversely, enabling acceleration cannot supply a missing codec.
Common failure branches
Only one file fails
Compare its actual audio and video streams with a file that works. A damaged download, an unusual stream, or an unsupported codec is more likely than a system-wide failure. Keep the working configuration intact while testing the single format.
Every file fails in one application
Try the same known-good file in another installed player. If it works there, the first application’s multimedia framework or plugin configuration is the likely boundary. Installing unrelated restricted packages may not change that application.

Audio plays but video does not, or the reverse
Audio and video are separate streams and can require different decoders. Identify each stream before choosing a package; a successful audio test does not establish video support.
A DVD is detected but playback stops
Check the optical drive, disc region, copy protection, and decryption workflow separately. Ordinary codec installation addresses none of those physical, regional, or legal conditions on its own.
Files play but are absent from desktop search
Check the LocalSearch extractor packages listed for Ubuntu 26.04. Indexing support is independent of the player’s ability to decode the same file.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Check your release and flavor before changing packages
Ubuntu package guidance ages faster than the underlying media concepts. Confirm whether you are running Ubuntu 26.04 LTS or another release, and note whether the desktop is stock Ubuntu or a flavor such as Kubuntu, Xubuntu, or Lubuntu. Then verify:
- the package name exists in your release’s repositories;
- the installer’s third-party software option was selected, if you want the optional codec set;
- the application you are using supports the relevant multimedia framework;
- you are solving playback, indexing, or DVD decryption—the packages are not interchangeable;
- your graphics hardware and driver match any acceleration instructions you follow.
Do not remove working packages merely because a different guide lists another extras group. Make one targeted change, test the original failing file, and keep a record of what changed so you can reverse it if necessary.
The practical decision
There is no universal Ubuntu codec switch. Keep the default installation when your files play. For a failed ordinary file, identify its stream and use the player’s targeted codec path. For stock Ubuntu, ubuntu-restricted-extras is the documented community route, while Ubuntu 26.04’s installer offers optional third-party media support that specifically includes AAC for supported Bluetooth headsets. Use the LocalSearch extractor packages only for indexing. Treat commercial DVDs as a separate case involving named DVD packages, libdvd-pkg, possible libdvdcss2 decryption, hardware and region checks, and a jurisdiction-specific legal decision.
