For free local over-the-air TV, use a VHF/UHF antenna that suits reception at your location. Your TV’s smart features do not affect antenna choice: first confirm it has a broadcast tuner and an antenna input, then try an indoor antenna if signals are favorable. If reception is weak or unreliable, an attic or outdoor antenna may be necessary.
Check that your TV can receive antenna broadcasts
A smart TV connects to apps and internet services; those features do not determine whether it can receive over-the-air broadcasts. In the United States, the TV needs a compatible digital broadcast tuner and an antenna connection. The Federal Trade Commission says TVs made since 2007 have a digital tuner, but check your exact model’s manual for its inputs and setup steps: FTC guidance on TV antenna claims.

An antenna receives local broadcasts available over the air. It does not unlock cable, satellite, or streaming-service subscriptions, and an amplifier cannot turn subscription channels into free broadcasts.
Choose an antenna that covers the local broadcast bands
For the broadest chance of receiving local stations, look for an antenna that covers both VHF and UHF. The FCC describes VHF as channels 2–13 and UHF as channels 14–51 in its consumer alert. Rods or rabbit ears are associated with VHF reception; a loop, bow-tie, or similar element is used for UHF. A combined VHF/UHF antenna is a practical starting category when you do not know which bands local stations use. See the FCC antenna and digital television guidance and its consumer alert about checking and relocating an antenna.

Do not rely on “HDTV” or “digital” wording alone to establish band coverage. The FCC cautions that some antennas marketed that way perform poorly on VHF or cover only one band. Check the product’s stated VHF and UHF support.
Decide between indoor, attic, and outdoor placement
| Antenna placement | When to consider it | What affects results |
|---|---|---|
| Indoor | Start here when local signals are favorable and you can place the antenna high and near a window. | Room location, walls and other building materials, nearby obstructions, station direction, and terrain all matter. |
| Attic | Consider it if an indoor antenna cannot provide stable reception and an elevated installation is practical. | Height and a clearer path can help, but the home and surrounding obstacles still affect reception. |
| Outdoor or rooftop | Consider it when indoor reception remains poor; the FCC says a rooftop antenna may be needed in some cases. | Mounting height, direction, terrain, trees, buildings, and installation constraints influence reception. |
There is no universal distance cutoff that determines which type you need. Reception depends on the stations near you, their direction, terrain, trees and buildings, home construction, and interference. AntennaWeb’s predictions assume an outdoor antenna 20 feet above ground; that is an assumption in its prediction model, not a universal installation recommendation. Indoor antennas introduce additional home-specific factors. Check its location-based reception resource as a starting point, not a guarantee for every room.

- Easy to Install: Plug the coaxial cable from your digital indoor HDTV antenna into the ANT/IN connector on the back of your TV, point the TV antenna toward your local TV tower and scan for channels. (Check "dtv gov maps" for available channels).
A range printed on an antenna package is not a promise that your home will receive every channel within that distance. The sources do not establish a universal range rating or an amplifier that will fix every weak-signal problem.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Set up the antenna and improve reception
- Connect it: Attach the antenna cable to the TV’s antenna or RF input. In the TV’s settings, choose antenna or over-the-air setup and run a channel scan. Menu names vary by model, so consult the TV manual; the Insignia setup guide is specific to the products it covers.
- Test position and direction: Place an indoor antenna as high as practical, preferably near a window. Try several positions and orientations. The FCC notes that placing an indoor antenna on top of the TV may not be the best position.
- Rescan after moving it: Run the TV’s channel scan again whenever you change the antenna’s position. A scan records channels the TV can detect from its current setup.
- Investigate missing or unstable channels: Check the direction of local stations and nearby obstacles, then test another position. If indoor placement still does not work well, consider an attic or outdoor antenna.
- Use cable for placement, not signal gain: A longer coax cable can let you put an antenna in a better location, but the cable itself does not improve the received signal.
What to buy first
If you have not checked reception at your address, start with a VHF/UHF indoor antenna that you can reposition and test. Choose attic or outdoor VHF/UHF equipment only if your reception conditions call for a higher or clearer placement. Base the decision on local station information and actual results after positioning and rescanning, rather than branding or a package range claim.
