Microsoft does not publish a definitive list of Windows 11 apps that will break as a result. The compatibility issue it documents separately is file and registry virtualization: if that policy is disabled, certain writes to protected locations can fail.
What changes when you disable UAC?
Microsoft describes UAC as “a Windows security feature designed to protect the operating system from unauthorized changes.” It is enabled by default and helps limit the ability of malicious code to run with administrator privileges. Microsoft’s UAC overview was last updated May 27, 2026.

In the normal administrator setup, someone who belongs to the Administrators group typically signs in and does everyday work with a standard user access token. When an action needs the administrator token, Windows requests approval. A standard user can perform an administrative task by providing valid administrator credentials through UAC. Disabling Admin Approval Mode removes that approval framework and related UAC policies; it does not establish that every process or malicious program will necessarily succeed.
Which apps or features can stop working?
There is no supported, comprehensive list of Windows 11 applications that will break when the main Admin Approval Mode policy is disabled. Microsoft’s documentation explains the security and elevation model, but does not identify a fixed set of incompatible apps.

A specific compatibility risk applies to a separate feature: file and registry virtualization. When enabled, virtualization can redirect certain failed writes by applications to protected locations—such as %ProgramFiles%, %Windir%, %Windir%system32, or HKLMSoftware—to per-user locations. Microsoft says writes to those protected locations can fail when the virtualization policy is disabled. This behavior is not automatically the result of every way of changing UAC. Microsoft’s virtualization policy documentation covers this setting separately.
“UAC off” can mean different settings
Windows has several related controls. Changing one does not necessarily turn off all the others.

| Control | What it changes | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Run all administrators in Admin Approval Mode | The full-disable policy. Microsoft maps it to the EnableLUA registry value: 1 enables it (the default); 0 disables it. |
Do not treat this as merely hiding a prompt. Disabling it turns off Admin Approval Mode and related UAC settings. Microsoft’s configuration documentation explains the policy and mapping. |
| Notification behavior | Controls when or how Windows notifies users about changes that require elevation. Microsoft’s technical material describes notification-slider behavior. | Changing notifications is not the same as proving that every related policy is disabled. The slider discussion is in Microsoft’s Windows Server UAC technical documentation; it is not evidence of Windows 11 app compatibility. |
| Secure desktop | Determines whether elevation prompts appear on the secure desktop or the interactive desktop. Microsoft documents it as enabled by default and recommends leaving it enabled for higher security. | It is a separate prompt-protection policy, not another name for Admin Approval Mode. Microsoft’s UAC settings documentation describes the option. |
| File and registry virtualization | Can redirect certain failed writes to protected locations to per-user locations when enabled. | It is a distinct compatibility setting; its behavior should not be conflated with disabling Admin Approval Mode. Microsoft’s policy documentation explains the virtualization behavior. |
Why does disabling Admin Approval Mode reduce security?
With Admin Approval Mode enabled, routine work generally uses a standard user token, while actions requiring administrator privileges trigger an elevation step. That separation helps prevent unauthorized changes from silently using administrator privileges. Disabling the policy removes this approval safeguard and reduces operating-system security, as Microsoft’s UAC configuration guidance explains. The practical concern is the weaker consent boundary—not a guarantee that every app will fail, or that all malware will run successfully.

What to do if your goal is fewer prompts
If the problem is frequent notifications, distinguish that goal from disabling Admin Approval Mode. Review the notification behavior rather than assuming that turning off the full policy is necessary. If the issue is a particular older application’s ability to save data, identify whether its writes target a protected location and whether virtualization is enabled; the documented virtualization behavior is separate from the main approval policy. Keep the secure desktop enabled for higher security, as Microsoft recommends.
