What to Write in a Dating Profile: Examples and Tips

A strong dating profile uses true-to-you details, small stories, and clear intentions to give someone a natural way to start a conversation.

Write a dating profile that gives someone a truthful glimpse of your everyday life, what you enjoy, and what kind of connection you want. Specific details and small stories are more inviting than generic labels such as “fun” or “adventurous”—and they give a match something easy to ask about.

What should I write in my dating profile?

Think of your profile as a small window into your life, not a résumé or a list of claims. Hinge’s Director of Relationship Science, Logan Ury, puts it this way: “Your profile is your chance to give people a window into your world.” Hinge recommends showing different sides of yourself, including humor and vulnerability, so someone can picture what spending time with you might be like. Hinge’s profile-refresh guide offers that advice as platform guidance, not a guarantee of more matches.

A useful starting point is to describe one ordinary thing you genuinely enjoy. “I love food” tells a reader little; “I’m working through the noodle shops on my saved map—send me your favorite bowl” gives them a detail and an opening. The aim is not to make every line clever. It is to make the profile recognizably yours and easy to respond to.

How do I make my dating bio less generic?

Replace broad descriptions with observable details: what you do, what you are learning, or what you tend to notice. A brief scene can reveal personality without announcing it. For example, instead of “I like to travel,” try: “My ideal long weekend has one museum, one long walk, and at least one bakery detour.” These are illustrative examples, not testimonials; substitute details that are true for you.

  • Trade labels for evidence: Show what “curious,” “laid-back,” or “funny” looks like in your daily life.
  • Choose details that invite a reply: Mention a current project, a favorite kind of outing, or a low-stakes opinion someone can ask about.
  • Use your natural voice: A simple sentence that sounds like you is stronger than a polished line you would never say aloud.
  • Skip familiar filler: Hinge advises avoiding one-word, generic, or clichéd prompt answers and refreshing content that is not working.

There is some research behind the appeal of a small story: an American Psychological Association press release in March 2026 summarized findings that narrative dating profiles drew more interest than lists of positive qualities. The release does not establish a guaranteed outcome for every person or profile. Read the APA summary.

What should I put in my dating profile about me?

Adapt this sequence to the fields your app provides; it is a planning aid, not a validated scoring formula. You do not need to include every element or make your profile read like a template.

  1. Start with a real-life anchor. Describe a satisfying day off, evening, or weekend in a way that is specific to you.
  2. Add one or two current interests. Say what you are cooking, learning, watching, making, or exploring lately.
  3. Include a small scene or opinion. A brief anecdote or playful preference can show your voice better than a string of adjectives. For instance: “I once took the scenic route to a picnic and arrived with a very confident map and no blanket.”
  4. Say what kind of connection you want, if you know. Use plain, considerate language that matches your real intentions.
  5. Leave an easy opening. End one prompt with a choice, recommendation request, or question a match can answer.

How do I say what I’m looking for in a dating profile?

Be direct without treating your preference as a demand. If you know you want a committed relationship, say so; if you prefer to take time getting to know someone, you can say that too. For example: “I’m hoping to meet someone for a committed relationship, and I like to take time getting to know each other.” Use that line only if it is accurate for you.

Avoid relying on a vague phrase such as “Let’s see what happens” if it hides what you actually want. Bumble’s 2026 announcement describes clearer dating intentions as a member need and discusses its Profile Guidance feature; that is the company’s rationale for its product, not independent evidence that a particular wording works best. Can I use AI to write my dating profile?

Yes, as a brainstorming or editing aid, but treat the result as a draft—not a substitute for your own details or voice. Hinge’s Lead Relationship Scientist Logan Ury says, “AI is great for a gut check or getting unstuck, but the goal isn’t a perfect message. It’s a message that sounds like you, because you want someone to fall for your authentic self.” Hinge also reports that 63% of its daters say they struggle with what to write on their profiles; that is a Hinge-reported figure, not a general-population statistic. Hinge’s guide to AI in dating.

  • Ask a tool for questions that help you identify specific interests or anecdotes, or for edits to a draft you wrote.
  • Remove details that are inaccurate, over-polished, or unlike how you speak.
  • Do not share private information with a tool without considering its data practices.

Keep photos separate from AI-generated profile writing. Hinge reports that 88% of its daters are uncomfortable with AI-generated profile photos, and its guidance favors recent, representative images. That percentage reflects Hinge’s reported research, not all people who use dating apps. Hinge’s AI guide.

What photos belong with a dating profile?

Choose current pictures that show what you look like, including at least one where your face is easy to see. Hinge advises against outdated photos, pictures that hide your face, multiple group shots, and gym selfies. These are Hinge’s recommendations; the practical test is whether a new match can recognize you and get a fair sense of how you look now. See Hinge’s profile-refresh advice.

How can I protect my privacy in a dating profile?

A profile should help someone get to know you without making it easy to identify your home, workplace, routine, or children. Australia’s eSafety Commissioner advises minimizing identifying details, being cautious with images that can be found elsewhere online, and avoiding links to social accounts that expose more personal information. Its guidance also recommends suitable privacy settings, strong unique passwords, and multi-factor authentication. Read the eSafety Commissioner’s online-dating guidance.

Profile choices are not a substitute for care when moving from chat to a meeting. Pew Research Center’s U.S. survey, fielded July 5–17, 2022 among 6,034 adults, found that 48% considered online dating generally very or somewhat safe; 52% of online-dating users said they had encountered someone they thought was trying to scam them. Those figures describe U.S. respondents and the survey period, not every country or app. See Pew’s findings.

eSafety notes that an app’s safety tools may only apply while a conversation stays on the platform. Hinge advises meeting first in a populated public place and telling a friend or family member when and where you will meet. These steps are precautions, not a guarantee of safety. eSafety guidance and Hinge’s safe-dating advice.

Is there a perfect dating profile formula?

No established evidence here supports a single ideal bio length, a match-maximizing formula, or a promise of a certain number of matches or dates. Apps also differ in whether they offer an open bio, prompts, voice prompts, polls, or optional feedback features, and availability can vary by market and change over time. Hinge describes tools including Prompt Feedback, Top Photo, Voice Prompts, and Prompt Polls; Bumble announced a global rollout of AI-suggested Profile Guidance and a Suggest a Date test in Canada in 2026. Those are dated company descriptions, not independent comparisons of results. Hinge’s guide and Bumble’s announcement.
