How to Choose the Right Stock Photo License for Commercial Use

Choose a stock photo license by checking the exact asset’s permitted use against your project—not just by looking for the words “royalty-free” or “commercial use.” Confirm whether the image is editorial-only, where and how widely you will publish it, whether it will appear on merchandise, what credit or editing rules apply, and whether people, property, or trademarks raise separate permissions questions.

Start with the image’s use label and your intended context

Before downloading or licensing an image, inspect its asset page and the provider’s current terms. An image marked Editorial Use Only is not cleared for advertising simply because you obtained a license. Adobe says editorial-only assets may be used in newsworthy or culturally interesting editorial contexts, but not in ads, promotions, advertorials, or merchandise without prior written consent and any necessary additional permissions. Shutterstock likewise defines editorial use as descriptive use in a newsworthy or human-interest context and excludes advertising and merchandising (Shutterstock license terms).

Ask what the image is doing in your project. A photograph illustrating a news report is different from the same photograph used to promote a product, endorse a service, or make a campaign more persuasive. If the use is promotional, select an asset licensed for commercial use rather than trying to make an editorial license fit.

Compare the terms that can change what you may do

Decision point What to verify Why it matters
Commercial or editorial eligibility Whether the asset is marked Editorial Use Only, and whether your placement is descriptive or promotional. Editorial restrictions can rule out ads, promotions, advertorials, and merchandise. Check the provider’s terms and the asset’s label (Adobe Stock licensing; Shutterstock license terms).
Audience or print run Expected copies, viewers, recipients, or distribution scale. Some license tiers cap particular uses. Adobe’s Standard License permits up to 500,000 copies for specified print and digital uses; its terms also set a below-500,000 expected-viewer threshold for specified email, mobile advertising, or broadcast uses. These are Adobe-specific terms, not an industry-wide rule (Adobe Stock licensing).
Merchandise and resale Whether the image is incorporated into an item for sale, and whether it is the item’s main value. Adobe’s Extended License permits certain merchandise uses where the asset is the main value, and use beyond the Standard License’s specified 500,000 restriction. Read the exact terms for your intended product (Adobe Stock licensing).
Media and placement Website, social post, email, print, broadcast, app, presentation, or another channel—and the surrounding context. A license may allow certain media while restricting a particular use or context. Adobe lists uses including websites, social media, presentations, print, and broadcast; confirm the terms that apply to your asset and license (Adobe Stock licensing).
Credit Whether a credit must appear, and where. Requirements differ by provider and context. Adobe requires credit in certain editorial contexts. Getty’s EULA says commercial use needs no photo credit, while editorial use requires credit (Getty Images EULA).
Editing Whether cropping, retouching, compositing, or other changes are allowed. Adobe limits edits to Editorial Use Only assets to minor technical adjustments or slight cropping or resizing that preserves editorial context and meaning (Adobe Stock licensing).
Duration, territory, and transfer How long and where the license applies, and whether it can be shared or transferred. Do not assume providers have identical terms. Adobe says its license is worldwide and non-expiring; check the selected provider’s agreement for other conditions (Adobe Stock licensing).

Choose a license tier for scale and products—not just the channel

A website, social account, or print placement does not by itself tell you which tier you need. The relevant question may be how many copies or viewers you expect, or whether the image will become part of a product you sell.

When Adobe’s Standard License may fit

Adobe’s Standard License permits up to 500,000 copies for specified print and digital uses. Its terms also describe a below-500,000 expected-viewer rule for certain email, mobile advertising, or broadcast uses. Check the full license wording against your specific distribution plan; neither threshold should be generalized to other providers.

When Adobe’s Extended License may be relevant

Adobe’s Extended License covers uses beyond the specified 500,000 restriction and certain merchandise when the asset is the main value of the product. If you are selling products featuring an image, determine whether the image is merely one element or the principal reason a customer would buy the item, then verify that the license covers that use.

Understand what “royalty-free” and free commercial use do—and do not—mean

“Royalty-free” does not mean unrestricted. Getty’s EULA specifies licensed-content rights and editorial credit conditions; Shutterstock’s terms distinguish editorial use from advertising and merchandising. Read the actual agreement for the provider and asset rather than relying on the label alone (Getty Images EULA; Shutterstock license terms).

Unsplash grants a free, worldwide, nonexclusive license for commercial use without attribution. Its license excludes compiling images to replicate a similar or competing service. That grant is still subject to its terms, and does not automatically settle questions involving releases or trademarks (Unsplash License; Unsplash guidance on releases and trademarks).

Check for rights beyond the stock-photo license

A stock license addresses rights granted by the provider; it does not establish that every person, property, logo, or trademark shown in a photograph is cleared for your particular use. Unsplash’s help material specifically flags releases and trademarks as separate considerations. Adobe and Shutterstock also condition some uses on permissions beyond the stock license (Unsplash guidance on releases and trademarks; Adobe Stock licensing; Shutterstock license terms).

  • Look for asset-specific notes and any available release information.
  • Consider whether recognizable people, private property, logos, or trademarks are prominent in the image.
  • Assess the actual placement: an image used descriptively may raise different issues from one used to suggest endorsement or promote a product.
  • If a consequential clearance question remains uncertain, seek qualified advice before publishing.

Save the license record and verify the terms before publishing

Keep the asset identification and a record of the terms that applied when you licensed it. Providers’ restrictions can vary by license, asset label, and sometimes asset details. Recheck the current asset page and complete agreement immediately before use, especially if the campaign, audience, product, or distribution plan has changed. Adobe says its license is worldwide and does not expire, but that statement is specific to Adobe and does not replace checking the license’s use restrictions (Adobe Stock licensing).
