Breast Cancer Now also says bra fit does not affect breast cancer risk. Sports Medicine Australia gives narrower cautions: it does not recommend underwire for contact, collision or combat sports because of injury risk, or for breastfeeding because localized pressure may block milk ducts. These are specific cautions, not a reason to avoid wire in all circumstances.
Check the fit before deciding it is supportive

- Band: It should feel firm and sit level. Raise your arms; the band should stay in place rather than riding up.
- Cups: They should contain all breast tissue without gaps or bulging.
- Straps: They should feel secure without slipping or digging into your shoulders.
- Wire, if present: It should sit along the breast crease and against the breastbone or ribs, not on breast tissue.
- Movement: Try the movements you expect to do and notice whether breast movement or discomfort feels manageable.
If you keep adjusting your bra, straps slip, or the fit feels uncomfortable, try different sizes and styles.
