A tank transmission transfers engine power to the tracks, manages speed and torque, and in some designs also helps steer and brake the vehicle. “Manual,” “automatic,” and “automated” describe how gears are selected or changed; terms such as “cross-drive,” “hydrodynamic,” and “hydromechanical” describe different aspects of the transmission’s arrangement or power flow. A documented example is the M1A1 Abrams X1100-3B, an automatic cross-drive transmission whose driver-controlled functions include movement, steering, and braking.
What a tank transmission does
A transmission connects an engine to the vehicle’s drive system. By managing gear ratios, it balances the speed and torque available to move the tracks. In tracked vehicles, the transmission or related drive components may also help send different amounts of power to the left and right tracks so the vehicle can turn. Some cross-drive designs combine propulsion and steering functions in one assembly.

On the M1A1 Abrams, U.S. Army ordnance training material identifies the X1100-3B as the unit through which the driver controls forward and reverse movement, steering, and braking. The lesson says it mounts directly to the engine and receives torque through an input quill shaft attached to the torque converter. U.S. Army Ordnance training material
What manual, automatic, and automated mean
These labels concern how gear changes are selected or carried out. They do not, by themselves, tell you how a tank steers or how power is transmitted internally.

- Manual shifting: The driver directly selects or initiates gear changes through the vehicle’s control system.
- Automatic shifting: The transmission changes ratios without the driver carrying out each shift. A 1977 SAE paper describes the X1100 as “fully automatic shifting.” SAE International’s paper on the X1100
- Automated mechanical shifting: A mechanical gearbox uses powered or controlled mechanisms to carry out shifts. Use this label only where a source documents it for the specific vehicle; simplified driver controls alone do not establish the internal design.
There is no single classification in the cited material that covers every tank. Descriptions should be tied to a particular model and variant, rather than generalized across generations or armies.
How a cross-drive differs from an automatic transmission
Automatic describes how ratios change. Cross-drive describes an integrated transmission arrangement that can combine propulsion and steering functions. Hydrodynamic and hydromechanical describe ways power is transmitted or combined within a system. They are not alternative names for automatic shifting.

- Linked Track Design with Layered Armor: Linked tracks, blue-gray bodywork, detailed texture decals, and layered armor panels give the model a bold modern armored vehicle style. The finished build presents rich surface depth and mechanical detail, making it a stronger display piece for desks, shelves, or collector setups
- Made for Display and Gifting: Measuring about 16.5 x 7 x 7.5 inches when complete, this tank building set is sized for desks, shelves, offices, and collector displays. It is a rewarding project and a stronger gift choice for military model fans, adult builders, and building set enthusiasts
For example, the 1977 SAE paper describes the X1100 as an automatic-shifting transmission and separately identifies hydrostatic steering, a four-speed range pack, integral power brakes, high-speed reverse, and torque-converter lockup across gear ranges. These are details reported for the X1100 discussed in that historical paper, not specifications to assume for every later variant. SAE International’s paper on the X1100

M1A1 Abrams: X1100-3B cross-drive
The U.S. Army lesson identifies the X1100-3B as the M1A1’s transmission and describes its role in movement, steering, and braking. The 1977 SAE paper offers historical design details for the X1100, including automatic shifting and hydrostatic steering. Read the Army lesson as evidence about the M1A1 X1100-3B and the SAE paper as an account of the X1100 design it discusses; neither should be used to assign identical specifications to every Abrams variant.

XTG411: a hydrodynamic cross-drive specification
The Defense Logistics Agency’s ASSIST listing for MIL-PRF-46750 covers the hydrodynamic XTG411 cross-drive transmission and major components for tracked military vehicles. The listing reports the specification as active and dates it July 20, 2026. That establishes a documented transmission type and specification status; it does not establish that a particular tank uses the XTG411. DLA ASSIST Quick Search
XHM1500: a hydromechanical development program
A U.S. government history of the XM1 development effort describes the XHM1500 as a hybrid hydrostatic-mechanical transmission. It reports that the hydrostatic elements performed well, but available hydraulic control technology did not provide optimal control, and development testing did not show the anticipated fuel-economy improvement. Those findings concern that historical program; they are not a general verdict on hydromechanical transmissions. U.S. Government Publishing Office

In the X1100 example described by SAE, hydrostatic steering and pivot steer are integrated alongside a four-speed range pack. This shows one way a cross-drive transmission can combine steering with propulsion. Other tank designs may use different mechanisms.

Do not infer a transmission type from the fact that a driver has a steering control, or assume every tank has hydrostatic steering or can pivot in place. The available examples support model-specific descriptions, not a universal rule.
How to compare two tank transmissions
A useful comparison separates shift behavior from steering design and internal power flow. Check each vehicle’s model and variant, and tie every specification to its source and publication date.
- Shift control: Does the driver select each ratio, or does the transmission shift automatically?
- Ranges: What forward and reverse ranges are documented, and how do they work?
- Steering: What mechanism produces turns, and is it integrated with the transmission?
- Braking: Are the brakes integrated into the transmission assembly or controlled separately?
- Power flow: Does the source describe hydrodynamic, hydrostatic, hydromechanical, or another arrangement?
- Evidence scope: Which vehicle model, variant, and date does each specification actually describe?
Without comparable test data, these descriptions do not support ranking systems by fuel economy, reliability, or performance.
