Dress for the range of conditions you expect, not just the temperature when you leave: start with a comfortable outfit, bring one removable insulating layer, and carry a shell when wind or rain is possible. Add or remove layers as the day and your activity change.
Build an outfit you can adjust
A simple layering system has three jobs: a base layer manages moisture next to your skin, an insulating middle layer helps retain warmth, and an outer shell blocks wind and rain. For an ordinary day with time indoors, that does not mean you need technical long underwear. A comfortable shirt and trousers can be your base outfit; add the other layers only if the forecast, destination, or time outside calls for them. REI’s layering guide explains the functions and tradeoffs of each layer.

Choose each layer for the conditions
Base outfit: comfortable first, technical when useful
For a cool-weather walk or other sustained outdoor activity, a moisture-wicking base layer can move perspiration away from your skin. Polyester and nylon synthetics, merino wool, and silk are options; they differ in drying, wicking, odor retention, and durability, so fabric preference matters. For a commute or a day spent mostly indoors, an everyday shirt may be all you need.

A lightweight fleece is a practical removable layer: it breathes and dries quickly, but wind can pass through it and reduce its warmth. Down is compressible and efficient for its weight, but performs less effectively when damp; synthetic insulation retains insulating ability better when damp. These are different tradeoffs, not a universal ranking. If wind is the problem, a shell over insulation can help.

Shell: match protection to exposure
For drizzle or breezy conditions, a water-resistant, breathable jacket may be suitable. For sustained or heavy rain, a waterproof, breathable jacket offers more protection. A shell can also trap perspiration during hard activity or in humid weather, so use vents or take it off when conditions permit. REI discusses these options in its layering guide and notes that fall days can be warm while still bringing rain and wind in its fall backpacking guidance.
Plan for a changing fall day
- Start with a light, comfortable outfit. Dress for the daytime conditions you expect rather than bundling up for the coolest moment.
- Pack one insulating layer. Use it for a cool morning or evening, a shaded stretch, or a stop when you are no longer moving.
- Bring a shell when wind or rain is plausible. Choose its protection level for the expected exposure, and wear it only when useful.
- Adjust before you overheat or get chilled. During outdoor activity, exertion changes how warm you feel; remove or add layers as your pace and conditions shift.
There is no jacket temperature rating that works for everyone: wind, rain, activity, and whether you tend to run warm or cold all affect comfort. REI’s cold-weather clothing guidance likewise emphasizes adjusting layers rather than relying on one universal cutoff.

Keep activity and exposure in view
A low-activity day and a brisk hike call for different choices even in similar weather. More exertion makes breathability and ventilation more important because you can build up sweat under insulation or a shell. For hiking, consider activity, terrain, and duration as well as the forecast; REI’s hiking clothing guide covers those factors.
For cold, wet, or otherwise hazardous exposure, safety guidance recommends layers and an outer layer that keeps out wind and rain. The National Weather Service and NOAA discuss moisture-wicking layers and waterproof, breathable outerwear for cold-weather safety. That is guidance for cold conditions, not a reason to wear winter gear on every mild fall day.
