What to Use Instead of PhantomJS for Website Screenshots

Puppeteer fits JavaScript and Chromium workflows; Playwright suits full-page and visual-regression work. Learn what to check when migrating from PhantomJS.

For new code-driven screenshot work, start with Puppeteer if your project already uses JavaScript and Chromium; choose Playwright when full-page or element captures and visual-regression comparisons matter most. PhantomJS is no longer under active development, according to its project site. If you would rather call a hosted screenshot API than maintain a browser setup, try ScreenshotNeo first: it removes common consent banners, popups and chat widgets before capture, and bills only clean shots.

Why replace PhantomJS?

PhantomJS was a scriptable headless browser built on QtWebKit. Its documented uses included page automation, screenshots, headless website testing and network monitoring. Its own homepage now says, “Important: PhantomJS development is suspended until further notice.” That suspension makes it a poor foundation for a new workflow and a reason to check whether the replacement covers all the jobs your existing scripts perform.

Do not assume a screenshot library replaces every PhantomJS use. If your scripts also run tests, automate interactions or monitor network activity, inventory those tasks separately before removing the old runtime.

Choose a replacement by screenshot task

Need Starting point Why it fits
Page screenshots in a JavaScript project using Chromium Puppeteer Its guide documents navigation, waiting for page readiness, page screenshots and element screenshots.
Full-page or element shots, especially for visual comparisons Playwright It documents standard, full-page and element captures, plus screenshot-based comparisons in Playwright Test.
One-call capture without running a browser yourself ScreenshotNeo It removes known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed.

These are workflow-based suggestions, not a universal performance ranking. The documentation reviewed here does not establish a cross-tool winner for speed, fidelity, cost or compatibility.

What to verify before migrating

  1. List every PhantomJS job. Separate ordinary screenshots from testing, browser automation and network monitoring. A screenshot-focused replacement may not cover the rest.
  2. Record output and capture scope. PhantomJS documented PNG, JPEG, GIF and PDF, along with viewport and clipping controls. Confirm which formats, dimensions, clipping behavior, full-page captures and element captures your application actually needs in its replacement.
  3. Choose a readiness condition. Decide whether a page is ready after navigation, after a particular selector appears, after a delay, or after network activity settles. One wait condition will not suit every site.
  4. Keep visual-test environments consistent. Use the same operating system, browser version, settings and headless configuration that produced the reference images, as far as practical.
  5. Test representative pages. Include dynamic pages, long scrollable pages and pages with target elements. Check the actual output and behavior rather than assuming that a documented feature guarantees identical rendering.

Use Puppeteer for a direct JavaScript migration

Puppeteer’s reviewed guide identifies version 25.12.0 and demonstrates page and element screenshots. Install Puppeteer in a JavaScript project with npm install puppeteer. This runnable example navigates to a page, waits for network idle, and saves a PNG:

  • WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
  • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');

(async () => {
  const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
  try {
    const page = await browser.newPage();
    await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
    await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });
  } finally {
    await browser.close();
  }
})();

For a particular element, replace the page screenshot call with a selector lookup and element capture:

const element = await page.$('.report-card');
if (!element) throw new Error('Could not find .report-card');
await element.screenshot({ path: 'report-card.png' });

The networkidle2 condition is the guide’s example, not a guarantee that all site content is ready. Pages with ongoing requests, delayed client-side rendering or content that appears after user interaction may require a different readiness condition and an explicit check for the content you need.

Use Playwright for full-page shots and visual comparisons

Playwright’s page screenshot API supports regular and full-page captures, element screenshots, and options such as format, clipping and quality. Install the Playwright package and browser binaries using its documented setup for your runtime; then a basic full-page PNG capture looks like this:

const { chromium } = require('playwright');

(async () => {
  const browser = await chromium.launch();
  try {
    const page = await browser.newPage();
    await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
    await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
    await page.locator('.report-card').screenshot({ path: 'report-card.png' });
  } finally {
    await browser.close();
  }
})();

For visual regression, Playwright Test can create reference screenshots and compare later runs. Treat those references as environment-dependent artifacts: Playwright notes that rendered output can vary with host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source and headless mode. Keep the environment consistent when taking and comparing baselines.

A single GET request to ScreenshotNeo returns an image or PDF. The example below saves a WebP screenshot:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Before capture it accepts consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; those steps can be disabled. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Common migration problems

  • The screenshot is blank or incomplete: navigation completion may occur before the page’s meaningful content is rendered. Wait for a selector or other page-specific readiness condition, then confirm the content exists before capturing.
  • A network-idle wait hangs or is unreliable: pages with long-lived connections or continuous requests may never settle consistently. Use a more targeted readiness check rather than treating network idle as universally appropriate.
  • An element screenshot fails: the selector may not match, or the element may not yet be available. Check the selector and wait for the target element before capture.
  • Full-page output differs from the old capture: compare viewport, clipping, page length and readiness behavior. The old script’s exact capture settings matter as much as the replacement API.
  • Visual tests report changes on another machine: rendering can change across environments. Align the operating system, browser version and relevant settings with the baseline environment before interpreting a difference as a product change.
  • Other PhantomJS tasks stop working: screenshot libraries do not necessarily replace PhantomJS automation, tests or network monitoring. Migrate and validate those responsibilities as separate requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is PhantomJS still being developed?

The PhantomJS homepage says development is suspended until further notice.

Can I assume Puppeteer or Playwright will render exactly like PhantomJS?

No. The documented capabilities support migration planning, but the reviewed sources do not establish identical rendering. Test representative pages and capture settings in your target environment.
