For gaming performance, the graphics card is often the first upgrade to investigate—but only if it is holding your system back and your prebuilt can physically fit and power a replacement. Upgrade the part that addresses your actual problem: GPU for graphics performance, RAM for memory pressure while gaming and multitasking, or an SSD for storage space and loading responsiveness.
Choose the upgrade by the problem you want to solve
| Upgrade | Best fit when | What it targets |
|---|---|---|
| Graphics card (GPU) | Gaming performance or graphics quality is the concern, and the GPU is limiting the experience. | Gaming graphics performance. Dell Support says a GPU upgrade usually provides the biggest boost to gaming performance, but that is a general starting point—not a guaranteed result for every PC. |
| Memory (RAM) | Games and other applications use more memory than the system has available, especially when you run several programs at once. | Memory capacity and multitasking. Intel describes 16 GB as a good starting point and says 32 GB is useful when running several applications alongside games; these are recommendations, not results from a performance study. |
| Solid-state drive (SSD) | You are short on game-storage space or the system loads slowly, particularly if it still uses a hard disk drive (HDD). | Storage capacity and loading or boot responsiveness. Intel says SSDs are faster than older hard drives and can reduce load and boot times; an SSD is not a generic frame-rate upgrade. |
When a GPU should come first
If your main goal is better gaming performance, begin by investigating the graphics card. Dell Support identifies the GPU as a common source of gaming performance limits and says upgrading it usually provides the biggest boost. That does not mean every prebuilt needs a new GPU: if another component or system constraint is the limiting factor, a graphics-card replacement may not address the problem.

Before choosing a card, identify your exact PC model and check its manufacturer specifications and manual. A card that works in a standard desktop may be too large for a compact prebuilt, incompatible with its power supply (PSU), or unsuitable for its connectors. Do not select a replacement by performance tier alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen more RAM is the better choice
Consider RAM when memory capacity is the constraint—for example, when gaming alongside several applications. Intel presents 16 GB as a good starting point and 32 GB as useful for running multiple applications while gaming. Those figures are guidance, not a guarantee that a particular amount will improve every system or game.

Check the exact machine’s supported memory type, maximum capacity, speed, and number of slots, then see how many slots are open and how the current modules are configured. A memory kit must match the system’s supported configuration; the capacity printed on a kit alone does not establish compatibility.
When to prioritize an SSD
An SSD is the relevant upgrade if you need more room for games or want faster loading and booting, especially when the current drive is an HDD. Intel describes SSDs as faster than older hard drives and says they can reduce game loading and system boot times. That benefit concerns responsiveness and loading—not a general increase in frame rates.

Before buying, verify which storage interfaces and slots your prebuilt supports, such as M.2 or SATA, and confirm that the drive’s type and capacity are supported. The exact model documentation is the reliable way to establish what can be installed.
Check compatibility before ordering
Prebuilt PCs vary: some use standard components, while others have compact layouts or proprietary parts. Compatibility should be confirmed for the exact model, rather than assumed from the fact that a component is sold for desktop PCs.

- GPU fit: Check the card’s length and height against case and slot clearance.
- Power: Confirm the PSU’s wattage and the power connectors required by the replacement card.
- RAM: Verify supported memory type, speed, maximum capacity, and available DIMM slots.
- Storage: Check for an available supported M.2 or SATA connection and any capacity or configuration limits.
- Platform constraints: Review the manufacturer’s documentation for compact or proprietary components and other model-specific restrictions.
MSI’s upgrade guidance and CORSAIR’s VENGEANCE-specific recommendations also emphasize checking power, clearance, slots, and specifications. Their product-family examples should not be treated as compatibility rules for every prebuilt; use the documentation for your own system.

Warranty implications depend on the manufacturer, model, and region, so review the current terms for your specific system before opening it. Policies are not uniform: Intel advises checking applicable warranty terms, while CORSAIR says upgrades to its VENGEANCE PCs are supported under warranty and that upgraded components have separate warranties. CORSAIR’s statement applies to that product family, not to prebuilts generally.
