The safest way to tell whether a ChatGPT or Gemini login page is real is to check its address before entering anything. OpenAI publishes its official domains and ChatGPT app links; Google directs users to gemini.google.com for Gemini. If a link or page leaves you unsure, close it and type the known address yourself or use a bookmark.
Start at the official address
For ChatGPT, use OpenAI’s official domain and app references rather than trusting a link in an unexpected email, text, or social post. OpenAI lists authentic OpenAI domains there; a domain that merely contains the word “openai” is not necessarily one of them.

For Gemini on the web, Google’s Gemini Apps Help directs users to gemini.google.com. Type that address in a fresh tab or open a bookmark you created after verifying it. Starting independently is safer than following a message link to a sign-in form.

The hostname is the part of the web address that identifies the site’s domain, shown in the browser’s address bar. Read it carefully, including the end of the name. A brand word inside a longer address, a misspelling, or an unexpected domain does not make the page official. OpenAI advises checking the URL, and Google advises checking where a link leads and avoiding untrustworthy links.

A logo, familiar colors, a convincing login screen, a search result’s position, or a padlock icon is not proof that OpenAI or Google operates the page. HTTPS encrypts the connection between your browser and that site; it does not establish the site’s identity.
If the page redirects, check the final address before entering credentials. If you cannot confidently match it to the service’s official starting point, stop and navigate to the service independently. OpenAI’s account-security guidance recommends verifying URLs and exercising caution around messages that ask for account details.

Check whether a sign-in request fits the service
ChatGPT
Use OpenAI’s published domain and app references to reach ChatGPT. Be cautious of messages asking you to provide credentials or directing you to a page that requests account details; verify through the known service rather than through contact details supplied in the message.
Gemini
Google documents a web flow that begins at gemini.google.com and then uses Sign in. Some Gemini web-app features may be available without signing in, depending on location and device; other features or saving Gemini Apps activity require a Google Account. So a sign-in prompt is not automatically fake, but the destination and context still matter. See Google’s Gemini sign-in instructions.

Warning signs that call for a pause
- An unexpected account-alert, subscription, or verification message sends you directly to a login page.
- The address has a typo, extra words, or a domain you did not expect.
- The page redirects somewhere you cannot verify.
- A message or page creates urgency or asks unexpectedly for a password, one-time code, recovery code, or payment details.
- The page looks familiar, but its address does not match the service’s verified route.
Google says never to share your password and notes that it will not ask for one by email, message, or phone call. The FTC’s phishing guidance also recommends avoiding links in unexpected messages and contacting a company through a known channel instead. Do not use reply addresses or phone numbers in a suspicious message to verify it.

If you already entered information
- Open the genuine service independently. Use the verified address or a trusted bookmark, not the suspected page or its links.
- Change the exposed password. If you reused it elsewhere, change it on those accounts too. OpenAI recommends changing an exposed or reused password.
- Review account activity and sessions. Sign out of sessions you do not recognize where that option is available. OpenAI notes that enabling MFA does not end existing sessions, so review and end unfamiliar sessions as part of recovery.
- Turn on MFA where available. Treat it as an added layer, not a substitute for changing a compromised password or checking sessions.
- Use official support and security tools. If an OpenAI account may be compromised, contact OpenAI Support through its official support site. For a Google Account, use Google’s account security guidance and Security Checkup.
- If you entered payment details, contact the payment provider through a known official route and monitor the account.
