To avoid your home line using cellular data abroad, select your travel eSIM for mobile data, turn off Data Roaming on your home line, and disable automatic data switching if you want data to stay on the travel line. Check the travel eSIM’s instructions separately: some providers require Data Roaming to be on for that line. These are per-line settings, and exact labels vary by phone, software version, carrier, and plan.
Which settings should you change?
- Mobile data line: Choose the travel eSIM.
- Home line’s Data Roaming: Turn it off if you want to prevent that line from using roaming data.
- Travel eSIM’s Data Roaming: Follow the travel plan provider’s instructions. Some plans require it to be on.
- Automatic data switching: Turn it off if you want to keep data on the selected travel line, provided your phone and carrier support the setting.
Data roaming is not the same as all roaming activity. Apple defines it as internet access over a cellular data network outside the carrier’s coverage. Turning off the home line’s data roaming does not establish that calls, SMS, or Wi-Fi calling are free. Check your home carrier’s international terms before departure.

Change the settings on an iPhone
- Open Settings > Cellular (or Cellular Data) and tap Cellular Data. Select the travel eSIM as the line for mobile data. Apple says the travel eSIM is used for data when both the travel and current eSIM are in use, but the home line may still incur roaming fees. Apple’s international eSIM guidance explains the setup and plan considerations.
- Return to Settings > Cellular, select your home line, then open its cellular data options and turn Data Roaming off. On a dual-SIM iPhone, select the specific number or line before changing its roaming setting; the control applies to that line, not both lines. See Apple’s roaming-options instructions.
- Select the travel eSIM in Cellular settings and set its Data Roaming as the provider directs. For example, Cellcom’s March 2026 simLOCAL setup guide instructs customers to turn roaming on for the travel eSIM. Do not apply the home-line setting to the travel line by assumption.
- If you want data to remain on the selected travel line, turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching if the option is available and suits your setup. Cellcom recommends disabling data switching for its travel eSIM setup; this is not a universal rule for every carrier or plan.
You do not have to turn off the entire home line just to prevent it from using roaming data. If you leave it on for calls or texts, those services may still be governed by your carrier’s roaming terms.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChange the settings on a Pixel
- Open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs, then choose the travel eSIM under the mobile-data preference. Google says a Pixel can have only one default data SIM at a time. Follow Google’s dual-SIM instructions.
- On supported devices, find Automatic data switching under Settings > Network & internet > SIMs. Turn it off if you do not want the phone to switch data away from the selected travel line. Google notes that some Pixel dual-SIM features require automatic switching to be on, so choose based on the behavior you want.
- Check roaming separately for each SIM and follow the travel plan provider’s instructions for the travel eSIM. If the menu labels differ, consult the phone maker’s and provider’s setup guidance rather than assuming the Pixel path applies.
Google notes that some instructions apply only to Android 11 and later, and that dual-SIM capabilities depend on the Pixel model and carrier. Two active eSIMs are supported on Pixel 7 and later only where the carrier supports the feature; this does not describe every Android phone.

Other Android phones: find the per-SIM controls
Android menus vary by manufacturer, model, software version, and carrier, so there is no reliable universal path. Look in Settings for SIM manager, Network & internet, or Mobile networks, then check the controls for the individual SIM or eSIM.
- Set the travel eSIM as the line for Mobile data.
- Turn off Data Roaming on the home line if your goal is to stop that line from using roaming data.
- Set the travel line’s Data Roaming according to its provider; some travel plans require it to be on.
- Disable Data Switching or Automatic Data Switching if you want data to stay on the selected line and the setting is available.
Cellcom’s March 2026 simLOCAL guide gives Android routes through SIM manager or Mobile Networks and notes that labels vary by device. Its roaming instruction applies to its travel plan, not automatically to all providers.

What these settings do—and what they do not guarantee
Turning off Data Roaming on the home line is a way to block that line from using roaming data; it is not a guarantee that every form of home-line use is free or disabled. Apple says carriers may include international roaming in select plans at no additional fee, and advises checking plan details with the carrier. Ask specifically about calls, SMS, Wi-Fi calling, roaming passes, and charges while the home line remains active.

Check before you leave
- Confirm the travel eSIM supports your destination and phone, and note when the plan should be activated.
- Verify which line is selected for cellular data and check roaming on each line independently.
- Ask your home carrier what happens to calls, texts, and Wi-Fi calling while the home line remains on abroad.
- Keep in mind that iPhone menus can appear as Cellular or Cellular Data, while Android paths and features vary by device and carrier.
For iOS 26 and later, Apple says an iPhone using a travel eSIM may automatically turn the travel eSIM off and turn the home SIM back on when you return, depending on country or region. If no notification appears, Apple advises confirming that the primary line is on.
