Before exposing a home server to the internet, set up five layers of protection: a restrictive firewall with network segmentation, private access for administration, multi-factor authentication (MFA), a patching and exposure-check routine, and monitoring with restorable backups. These are control categories, not a one-size-fits-all software stack; the right implementation depends on your router, operating system, and the applications you run.
First ask whether a service needs to be public at all. CISA’s Internet Exposure Reduction Guidance, published June 4, 2025, recommends identifying exposed assets and removing or restricting unnecessary exposure. Its guidance is written for organizations, but the core principle applies to a household network: expose only what you need, and keep administration on a trusted access path.

1. Restrict inbound traffic with a firewall and segmentation
A firewall should allow inbound connections only to the ports required by the service you intend to offer. Do not treat a port as safe merely because an application uses it, and do not expose router, server, or application management interfaces for convenience.

- Check both the router’s internet-facing rules and the server’s own firewall. A rule at one layer does not automatically protect against an overly permissive rule at another.
- Where your router and network support it, isolate the publicly reachable server from personal computers, phones, and other devices. Segmentation limits how far a compromise can spread.
- Keep management available only from trusted devices and networks. CISA’s Enhanced Visibility and Hardening Guidance for Communications Infrastructure recommends segmentation, trusted-network management, and scanning internet-facing infrastructure for unnecessary services.
There is no universal list of ports to open: it depends on the application and how you have configured it. Open only the ports the intended public service actually requires; keep SSH, dashboards, and other administrative endpoints private unless a specific need justifies another tightly controlled design.

2. Put remote administration behind private access
Use a VPN or another access-controlled gateway for services that are for you, not the public. That usually means SSH, server dashboards, and application administration pages should not be reachable directly from the internet. CISA advises against managing devices from the internet and recommends restricting access, including through VPNs where appropriate.
Do not expose Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) directly to the web as a default remote-access method. CISA’s #StopRansomware Guide advises against web-exposed RDP. A gateway can reduce who can reach an administrative service, but it does not fix flaws in the service itself: keep the server and applications patched as well.
3. Protect accounts with MFA and strong credential hygiene
Require MFA on accounts that can reach the server or its administration plane wherever the relevant service supports it. Use unique, strong passwords, change default credentials, and remove accounts that no longer need access. These measures reduce the chance that a guessed, reused, or unchanged default password becomes an entry point.

- Entry-level NAS Personal Storage:UGREEN NAS DH2300 is your first and best NAS made easy. It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
- Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. You can store 22 million 3MB images, or 2 million 30MB songs, or 43K 1.5GB movies or 67 million 1MB documents! UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
- The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
- Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
MFA availability varies by application and access method. If a component does not support MFA, avoid making its login page publicly reachable; place it behind a gateway that can enforce stronger authentication, or restrict it to trusted networks.
4. Keep software supported, patched, and checked from outside
Internet-facing software needs ongoing maintenance. Install security updates for the operating system and applications, disable services you do not use, and replace unsupported software or devices. A reverse proxy or VPN is an additional layer, not a substitute for fixing a vulnerable application behind it.
- Inventory what is exposed. List the server, applications, and ports reachable from the internet, including services forwarded by the router.
- Remove what is unnecessary. Disable unused services and close their inbound rules rather than relying on obscurity.
- Apply updates routinely. Keep the operating system and exposed applications on supported versions and install security patches.
- Check externally on a recurring basis. Scan from outside your home network to confirm that only intended ports are reachable. Repeat the check after meaningful network or service changes.
CISA’s exposure guidance recommends current patches, retiring unsupported components, and recurring exposure assessment. Its hardening guidance also supports scanning internet-facing infrastructure. A scan tells you what appears reachable from its vantage point; it does not prove that an application is secure.

5. Monitor activity and maintain backups you can restore
Review system and application logs for unexpected logins or access, and pay attention to network traffic entering and leaving the server. Monitoring is useful only if you can act on what it reveals, so make sure you know where alerts and logs appear and how to investigate them.
Back up important data and operating-system files. Keep backup copies separate from the server so that a compromise or hardware failure does not take out both the original and its only backup. An external drive is one possible backup medium, but a drive alone is not a complete backup or off-site recovery plan. Test restores in a way that fits your setup; the cited guidance supports backups and monitoring but does not prescribe a particular restore-test interval.
NIST’s Secure Web Servers: Protecting Web Sites That Are Accessed by the Public summarizes foundational web-server guidance that includes managing backups of data and operating-system files. The bulletin was published January 31, 2008, and its page was updated January 27, 2020, so treat it as foundational guidance rather than current product documentation.

Choose controls that fit what you are exposing
The right setup depends on whether an application truly needs to be public, what protections your gateway supports, and what you can maintain. Use these questions to evaluate your design:
- Does the application need public access, or is private access enough?
- Can the gateway enforce MFA and limit access to trusted devices or users?
- Can firewall rules and network segmentation isolate the server?
- Can you keep the operating system and applications updated and respond to alerts?
- Are backup copies independent of the server, and have you confirmed you can restore them?
These controls work together rather than replacing one another. A public service still needs updates and monitoring even if it sits behind a gateway, while private administration still needs strong credentials and MFA where available.
