Pack for the coldest, wettest, and latest-ending conditions your day hike could reasonably bring—not just the weather at the trailhead. Use the National Park Service’s Ten Essentials as your baseline, then adjust clothing, water, footwear, and daylight plans for your route, forecast, terrain, and group.
Before you pack: check the route and the day
- Check the forecast, park or trail alerts, closures, wildfire risks, and current trail conditions. Choose another route or postpone if conditions are poor.
- Choose a route that suits the group’s experience and ability. Learn its terrain and carry navigation tools you know how to use.
- Check sunrise and sunset, allow for delays, and set a turnaround time. The National Park Service recommends tracking time and distance and turning back if the trip is taking longer than planned.
- Leave a trusted person your route and expected return time. Where cell reception is unreliable, consider an appropriate emergency communication device.
Fall varies widely by region and elevation. Conditions that are mild at the trailhead can be colder, wetter, or windier farther along the route, so use destination-specific guidance rather than assuming every fall hike is alike. The National Park Service’s Hike Smart page covers planning and route-dependent gear.

The Ten Essentials: your day-hike packing checklist
The National Park Service describes the Ten Essentials as “a collection of important items that can help you or others in the event of minor injuries, sudden weather changes, or unexpected emergencies.” Think of them as ten systems, not a fixed brand-name shopping list; what fulfills each one depends on the hike.

|---|---|---|
| Navigation | Map, compass, and/or GPS suited to the route, plus a physical map backup. Know how to use your tools. | Downloaded phone maps and spare phone power can help, but do not rely on a phone as your only navigation plan. |
| Sun protection | Sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat; sun-protective clothing can also help. | Include this even on cool or cloudy days if the route and exposure call for it. |
| Extra clothing | An insulating layer and rain shell or other rain gear; add a warm hat and gloves when conditions warrant. | Choose layers for the route’s plausible weather, not only the temperature at departure. Consider dry spare clothing for wet routes. |
| Illumination | A headlamp or flashlight and spare batteries. | A headlamp keeps your hands free if a delay pushes the hike toward darkness. |
| First aid | A first-aid kit suited to the route and your group’s needs, plus personal medications. | Check expiration dates and include blister care where useful. |
| Fire | Matches or a lighter and fire starter. | Follow local fire restrictions; do not use fire where it is prohibited. |
| Repair and tools | A basic repair kit and a suitable tool, such as a knife, multitool, scissors, or duct tape. | Choose tools that address likely problems on your route without carrying unnecessary weight. |
| Food | Easy-to-carry, nutritious food for the planned outing, plus a reserve for delays. | The NPS Ten Essentials guidance recommends an extra day’s supply; size your reserve to the trip and group. |
| Hydration | Water for the expected route and conditions; if collecting water is part of the plan, bring suitable treatment. | Needs vary with exertion, weather, duration, route, and personal factors. Do not assume a stream is safe to drink untreated. |
| Emergency shelter | A suitable lightweight emergency blanket, tarp, bivy, or other shelter. | Choose an option appropriate to the route and conditions if you must wait outdoors unexpectedly. |
The NPS item descriptions and safety rationale are in its Ten Essentials guidance.

Choose fall clothing for weather, not the calendar
A practical fall clothing system keeps you protected from rain and wind and gives you insulation if the temperature drops. Start with moisture-wicking clothing, add a warm layer, and pack rain protection even if the hike begins comfortably. Avoid cotton in cool, wet conditions because damp clothing can leave you cold; on a wet route, a dry spare layer may be useful.
There is no single best outfit for every fall hike. Base your choices on forecast temperature, rain, wind, exposure, route length, and whether your clothing can help keep you warm if it gets damp. A packable hiking rain shell is one way to carry rain protection without wearing it throughout the hike; it is an example of a gear category, not a tested or ranked recommendation. The NPS’s regional Olympic National Park wilderness guidance emphasizes preparation for cool, wet conditions, but local weather and route conditions should guide your own choices.

Plan water around your specific hike
Estimate water for the route’s duration and expected effort, taking weather, available sources, and your own needs into account. If you expect to refill from streams, bring an appropriate treatment method and follow the destination’s advice; do not treat untreated stream water as safe.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park advises hikers to carry “at least 1 liter per 2 hours of hiking.” That is the park’s regional guidance, not a universal prescription for every person, route, or climate. Its page also describes boiling water for one minute or using a filter that removes particles as small as 1 micron as safe methods. Check current guidance for your destination and use a treatment method suitable for the water and conditions. See the park’s Hiking Safety page for its water and clothing advice.

Match footwear and extras to the trail
Choose footwear for the surface and conditions rather than assuming everyone needs hiking boots. The NPS distinguishes sturdy rubber-soled boots for dirt and gravel trails from tennis shoes for paved urban pathways. On a fall route, consider how mud, wet ground, and leaves affect footing; moisture-wicking socks and a spare pair may be useful on wet hikes.
Loose, slick autumn leaves can contribute to slips and ankle fractures in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, according to the park’s safety guidance. That warning is specific to the park, but it is a useful reminder to assess footing on leaf-covered trails elsewhere. Route-dependent additions may include insect protection, blister care, or a personal locator beacon where it is useful.

Do not rely on a phone or a comfortable start
A phone can support navigation when maps are downloaded and power is available, but reception and battery life are not guaranteed. The National Park Service advises, “Don’t rely on your cellphone while recreating in a national park.” Carry a navigation backup you can use, and consider an emergency communication device where coverage is absent and the trip warrants one.
Pack illumination and a food reserve so an unplanned delay is less likely to leave you without light or supplies. A headlamp with spare batteries is a practical hands-free option; your turnaround time and the trip plan you shared before leaving are part of the same preparation.
