Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen buying a gaming phone, judge the whole experience—not just its highest refresh rate or biggest battery. Check whether your games can use the display’s fast modes, how well the chipset sustains performance during long sessions, how the phone handles heat, and what independent battery tests show. Then weigh those advantages against camera quality, software support, comfort, carrier compatibility, and price.
Start with the games you actually play
A phone’s headline specifications matter only if they improve the games and settings you use. Before comparing models, note which games you play, whether they support high frame rates on your device, how long your usual sessions last, and whether you play while charging. A game’s frame-rate options can vary by device, settings, and software version, so a phone’s maximum refresh rate is not a guarantee that a particular game will run at that rate.

For example, TechRadar reported fluid gameplay and a 90fps mode in Destiny: Rising on the REDMAGIC 11 Pro under the settings tested in its review. That is an observation from one review period, not a promise for other games or later software versions. Read TechRadar’s REDMAGIC 11 Pro review.

How to judge the display
Refresh rate is only one part of a gaming display. Compare panel type, resolution, measured brightness when available, adaptive refresh behavior, touch response, and protective glass. A bright, clear screen that responds reliably to touch can matter more than a higher maximum refresh mode that your games do not support.

- FIT EVERYONE IN THE SHOT: Group selfies are easier on your Samsung phone with a wider front camera⁴ that captures more of the scene, so no one gets left out of the moment
- Panel and resolution: OLED or AMOLED panels are common on gaming-oriented phones. Check the resolution as well as screen size; higher resolution can make games look sharper, but may also increase power use.
- Refresh rate: Treat the listed maximum as a device capability, not the frame rate you will get in every game. Confirm that the games you play offer a matching high-frame-rate mode on that phone.
- Adaptive behavior: Look for whether the screen adjusts its refresh rate and what modes are selectable. A high maximum and an adaptive range are different specifications.
- Brightness and protection: Peak brightness is usually a manufacturer figure, not a substitute for independent measurements or outdoor-use observations. Also check the glass protection if you carry or play with the phone frequently.
The specifications illustrate why modes need context. REDMAGIC lists the 11 Pro with a 6.85-inch AMOLED screen at 2688 × 1216 and up to 144Hz. ASUS lists the ROG Phone 9 with a 6.78-inch FHD+ (2400 × 1080) flexible AMOLED panel, adaptive LTPO 1–120Hz operation, and selectable maxima of 165Hz in system settings or 185Hz in Game Genie. Those are manufacturer-listed specifications, not proof that games run at those rates. See the REDMAGIC 11 Pro specifications and ASUS ROG Phone 9 specifications.
Choose a chipset for sustained play, not just peak speed
The chipset’s CPU and GPU determine whether a phone can run demanding games at the graphics settings and frame rates you want. But a strong peak benchmark does not establish how steadily the phone performs after it has been under load for a while. Look for independent tests that report frame delivery, heat, and performance during extended gaming—not only a short benchmark or a manufacturer’s best-case claim.

TechRadar found that the REDMAGIC 11 Pro was more stable across an intensive 20-minute graphics test than most non-gaming phones, but less consistent than the REDMAGIC 10 Pro in that reviewer’s test. The review itself notes that more comparisons would help clarify the result. This is useful evidence about those models in that test, not a controlled comparison of every current gaming phone. TechRadar’s review describes the test and its limits.

- Check tests at the game and graphics settings that resemble your use.
- Prefer sustained frame-rate results and observations about stutter or throttling over a single peak score.
- Compare memory and storage configurations as well as the chipset; the exact configuration available can vary by model and region.
Cooling: useful design, but verify the result
Gaming phones may use vapor chambers, heat spreaders, internal fans, or optional external coolers to manage heat. These design features can help, but a component list alone does not show how cool a phone stays or whether it sustains performance in a long session. Pair manufacturer descriptions with independent observations of heat and sustained play.

REDMAGIC says the 11 Pro’s AquaCore system includes a 13,116 mm² vapor chamber, composite liquid metal, and a 24,000 RPM fan. ASUS describes GameCool 9 in the ROG Phone 9 series and offers an optional AeroActive Cooler X Pro. These are vendor specifications and design claims; they are not directly comparable thermal measurements. The REDMAGIC specifications and ASUS ROG Phone 9 series announcement describe the respective systems.
An internal fan can introduce noise and needs an airflow path. An optional clip-on cooler adds another item to carry and may affect how you hold the phone. Consider whether the cooling approach suits your typical play environment and grip, rather than assuming more cooling hardware automatically means a better experience.

Battery capacity is not gaming runtime
Compare battery capacity with independent gaming or mixed-use runtime tests, charging speed, charging behavior while gaming, and the phone’s weight. Capacity in milliamp-hours (mAh) is one input, not a runtime prediction: workload, brightness, refresh settings, radio use, and cooling can all affect how quickly a phone drains.
REDMAGIC lists a 7,500mAh battery and up to 80W wired charging for the 11 Pro. ASUS lists an equivalent typical capacity of 5,800mAh for the ROG Phone 9. These are manufacturer-listed figures, and capacity alone does not establish which phone lasts longer in a particular game. See the REDMAGIC 11 Pro specifications and ASUS ROG Phone 9 specifications.

For a separate example of the difference between capacity and measured endurance, Tom’s Guide reports a 20:34 battery-test result for the ROG Phone 9 Pro. That is the publication’s test result for the Pro model, not a guarantee for the ROG Phone 9 or for gaming in every configuration. Tom’s Guide’s phone guide also identifies limited software support and weaker camera output as trade-offs for that gaming-oriented device; its reported $1,100 launch price is historical and specific to that model, not a current price for the ROG Phone 9.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check the trade-offs beyond gaming
A dedicated gaming phone may prioritize cooling, controls, display modes, and long sessions. A mainstream flagship may suit you better if you also prioritize versatile cameras or longer software support. Compare these factors for the exact model and regional version you can buy:
- Software support: Check the manufacturer’s current update commitment for the exact model. Do not infer support length from another phone in the same brand’s lineup.
- Cameras: If you take photos often, compare independent camera reviews rather than assuming gaming hardware makes a phone a good all-rounder.
- Ergonomics: Consider size, weight, button placement, fan noise, and whether a cooler or case changes your grip during long play.
- Connectivity: Verify carrier-band compatibility for your country and carrier; international specifications do not establish local network compatibility.
- Price, warranty, and availability: Check current local price, stock, warranty terms, and the exact configuration before purchase. These can change by region and over time.
Regional checks are not a formality: REDMAGIC’s North American product page specifically tells buyers to check mobile carrier-band compatibility, and its displayed stock status can change. Use the REDMAGIC North America product page as an example of why an international specification sheet is not enough to confirm a local purchase.

A practical comparison checklist
- Match the screen to your games. Confirm the game supports the phone’s higher frame-rate modes, then compare resolution, adaptive refresh, brightness evidence, touch response, and glass protection.
- Look for long-session testing. Find independent gaming results that identify the game, settings, duration, frame stability, and heat observations. Treat short benchmarks as context, not proof of sustained performance.
- Evaluate cooling in use. Note whether the phone relies on passive cooling, an internal fan, or an optional accessory, and account for noise, airflow, and comfort.
- Compare runtime and charging. Use gaming or mixed-use tests alongside capacity and charging specifications; factor in the phone’s weight and whether you play near a charger.
- Verify the everyday fit. Check cameras, software support, carrier bands, warranty, price, and availability for the precise regional model you intend to buy.
Current examples show the range of approaches, but specifications are not a same-lab comparison. REDMAGIC lists the 11 Pro’s display, cooling, battery, charging, and Android 16-based REDMAGIC OS 11 on its specification page; its product page includes additional vendor claims. ASUS’s ROG Phone 9 series announcement and specification page provide its corresponding official details. Treat vendor claims as specifications or company tests, and use independent reviews to assess observed performance.
