Start with where you’ll use the speaker and how you’ll carry it. Then choose the smallest size that still provides enough bass and volume for that setting. Compare the full dust and water rating, treat battery-life figures as conditional, and check that the speaker’s pairing, controls, charging and app features fit your devices. Compact size is a trade-off, not a guarantee of a particular sound or a universally best choice.
1. Choose size for the place you’ll listen
A pocketable speaker is convenient, but a smaller cabinet generally limits deep bass and maximum loudness. RTINGS notes that size affects sound, volume, battery life and portability, so think about the listening space before choosing the smallest model available.

- For personal listening or travel: prioritize easy carry and controls you can use on the move.
- For a small room or shared outdoor space: consider whether you need more volume and fuller bass than a very small speaker can provide.
- For a group or larger area: don’t assume a compact speaker will fill the space; check independent listening tests for the exact model if output matters.
Dimensions help you judge whether a speaker will fit in a pocket or bag, but they do not establish its weight or comfort to carry. For sound comparisons, look for evidence on loudness, bass, stereo or mono presentation, and how the speaker sounds from different listening angles. RTINGS’ Bluetooth speaker buying guide explains the general trade-offs, but the specifications of individual models are not a substitute for comparable listening tests.

2. Match the dust and water rating to your setting
Read the complete IP rating rather than relying on a label such as “water-resistant.” The digits describe different forms of protection. RTINGS says IP67 is dust-tight and permits immersion in up to one meter of water for 30 minutes under the stated rating. That does not mean a speaker is protected against every kind of exposure or that you should ignore its instructions.

- Kitchen or indoor use: decide whether extra protection is worth any trade-offs in size, features or price.
RTINGS’ explanation of ratings and buying trade-offs is in its buying guide. LG also advises buyers to consider protection in light of where the speaker will be used: LG’s Bluetooth speaker guide.
3. Treat battery life as a test-condition figure
“Up to” battery life is not a promise of the runtime you will get at your usual volume. Playback time can change with loudness and active features. LG says its published playback figures use internal testing at 50% volume with lighting off; those conditions are LG’s, not a universal test standard for speaker makers.

Estimate how long you need the speaker between charges, then check the manufacturer’s stated test conditions and whether charging will be available. Also check the charging connector and, if you need it, whether the speaker can charge another device. A battery-life number is most useful when its test conditions resemble your likely use.

- Multipoint: useful if you want two source devices connected, but verify the model supports it and understand how it switches between them.
- Stereo or party pairing: check which models can pair together and whether pairing creates stereo sound or simply synchronizes playback.
- Equalizer and app: an app-based EQ can provide sound adjustments, but confirm the controls are available for the particular speaker.
- Codec support: benefits depend on compatible support from both the phone and speaker. Bose lists SBC and AAC support for the SoundLink Micro (2nd Gen); that is a model-specific example, not a universal requirement.
- Inputs and physical controls: check for any wired input you need and whether buttons are easy to find and operate in your intended setting.
RTINGS recommends considering EQ, pairing, ecosystem compatibility and extra inputs. Its buying guide is a useful checklist; confirm each feature on the exact product listing before buying.

Manufacturer specifications can show the kind of differences to compare, but they do not establish which speaker sounds better. These are manufacturer-published specifications: Bose’s June 12, 2025 announcement describes the SoundLink Micro (2nd Gen), while JBL’s comparison page, accessed October 4, 2026, lists the Go 3 and Flip 6. Bose says the Micro and Plus speakers support multipoint for two source devices; its announcement specifies Bluetooth Core 5.4 and a range of up to 30 feet for those speakers. A quick buying checklist
- Write down where you’ll listen, how far the sound needs to carry and how you’ll carry the speaker.
- Set a practical size limit, then decide how much bass and volume you need within it.
- Choose the protection rating for your actual exposure to water and dust, and read the product’s care instructions.
- Compare battery-life test conditions with your expected volume and session length; check charging access and connector.
- Verify must-have features—such as multipoint, pairing, app EQ, codecs or an extra input—on the exact model listing.
- Use independent reviews for sound and real-world runtime comparisons. Do not infer a winner from dimensions, IP ratings or manufacturer maximums alone.
