Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBefore buying a Chromebook, check the automatic update end date for the exact model—not just its release year, retail date, or product-family name. Google’s policy provides 10 years of automatic updates from a device’s platform release date, so the support time left when you buy depends on that model’s schedule. On a Chromebook in hand, find the date at Settings → About ChromeOS → Additional details → Update schedule.
How long will a Chromebook get updates?
Google says ChromeOS devices receive 10 years of automatic updates measured from the platform release date. That is not 10 years from the day you buy the device. A Chromebook that has already been on sale for some time may have less support remaining than a newer model, even if both are new to you.

The relevant date is the model-specific “Automatic updates until” date in Google’s current Auto Update policy schedule. Google describes that date as when the device receives its last update. Check the exact model entry before buying; broad family names may cover variants with different listings or update handling.
How to check a Chromebook’s update end date
- Identify the exact model. Use the full model name and, where available, its platform or model variant. Don’t rely on a retailer’s shortened family name alone.
- Look it up in Google’s current Auto Update policy list. Find the model’s “Automatic updates until” date.
- Confirm on the device, if possible. Open Settings → About ChromeOS → Additional details → Update schedule and check the displayed final-update date.
- Work out the remaining support time. Compare the date with how long you expect to use the Chromebook. Choosing a minimum acceptable runway is a personal decision, not a Google-mandated standard.
Google’s schedule can change, so recheck the exact listing close to purchase rather than relying on an old product description or a date quoted in an earlier review.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
What happens after the final software update?
Google says that after the final software update, a Chromebook no longer receives ChromeOS or browser updates. Those updates include security updates, bug fixes, and new features. Google also warns that existing features may stop working and that some apps require newer ChromeOS or browser versions.
The device does not necessarily stop working on that date: Google says users can continue using an older Chromebook. The practical tradeoff is that its software will no longer get those updates, and compatibility may become an issue over time. Treat the update end date as a security and usability consideration, not as a claim that the laptop will suddenly become unusable.

What extended updates mean for older Chromebooks
Eligible Chromebooks released before 2021 can receive extended updates for a total of 10 years from the platform release date. Some older models require the owner to opt in. Google says these extended updates continue security, performance, and stability improvements, but its consumer guidance says they do not include Google Play Store or Android app support.
If you depend on Android apps, verify the exact model’s eligibility and update schedule before buying, and consider whether losing Play Store and Android app support under extended updates would work for you. Do not assume that every older Chromebook receives the same treatment: Google’s device table marks some models for extended-update handling, and the exact listing and any opt-in condition matter.

Compare Chromebook candidates on the factors the schedule can answer
| What to compare | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Update end date | The exact model’s “Automatic updates until” date in Google’s current schedule | It shows how much of the support period remains when you buy. |
| Extended-update status | Whether the model is an eligible pre-2021 Chromebook and whether opting in is required | Older models may have additional conditions. |
| Android app needs | Whether extended updates for that model exclude Play Store and Android app support | This can affect app compatibility if you rely on Android apps. |
These checks do not establish which candidate has the better processor, more memory or storage, longer battery life, better screen or keyboard, more useful ports, or the better current price. Assess those separately for the exact models and your needs; an update schedule is not a hardware comparison.

A practical buying decision
- Choose a longer remaining update runway if you expect to keep the Chromebook for several years or want to reduce the chance of reaching its final update during your ownership.
- Assess an older model carefully if its update date is near, extended updates require opt-in, or you depend on Android apps.
- Weigh an earlier end date against your intended use rather than assuming the device immediately becomes unusable. Consider the end of browser and ChromeOS updates alongside the possibility that features or apps may no longer work as expected.
