Choose a bakeware set by the pans you will actually use, their dimensions, material and finish—not by piece count alone. Then check the oven-temperature limit, care instructions and any product-specific food-contact information. Those details determine whether a set fits your recipes, browns food as you expect and suits your kitchen routine.
Start with the pieces and dimensions
Compare the exact contents of each set against the recipes you make. Sets with the same number of pieces can contain very different pans, so count and labels alone do not tell you whether a set will be useful.

For example, USA Pan’s 9-Piece Nonstick Bakeware Set lists a half sheet, two 9-inch round cake pans, a rectangle cake pan and a small loaf pan, among other pieces. Nordic Ware’s Naturals Bakeware 5 Piece Bake & Store Set has a different assortment. Check the product listing for every included shape and its dimensions.
- Prioritize pans that match the cakes, breads, cookies or other baked goods you regularly make.
- Check dimensions against your oven racks, recipe requirements and storage space.
- Identify gaps before buying: a set may not include a shape you need, even if its piece count sounds generous.
Choose material and finish for the browning you want
Pan material and surface finish affect crust color and browning. KitchenAid’s guide, What Bakeware Should be Used, describes these general tendencies:
#1 Best Overall
- 6-piece bakeware set includes a 9 x 5-inch loaf pan, 2 round 9-inch cake pans, a 12-cup muffin pan, a 13 x 9-inch roast pan, and a 13 x 9-inch baking sheet
- Nonstick coating for effortless food release and easy cleaning
- Heavy-weight steel construction for thorough, even heating
- Oven-safe to 428 degrees F
- Hand wash for best results
| Material or finish | Browning tendency |
|---|---|
| Light-colored aluminum | Light golden crusts with even browning |
| Dark, dull or nonstick finish | Brown, crisp crusts |
| Insulated sheets | Little or no bottom browning |
| Stainless steel | Light golden crusts with uneven browning |
These are general tendencies, not a guarantee for every pan or recipe. Follow the recipe and oven maker’s recommendations; switching pans can affect baking temperature or time.
Check oven limits and care instructions
Confirm the maximum oven temperature for the exact set, then read its cleaning, utensil and storage guidance. Instructions differ by product and should not be assumed to apply to every bakeware set.

Read food-contact safety claims in context
Health Canada’s guidance on the safe use of cookware and bakeware says that whether substances transfer into food depends on the food, the material and conditions of use. Use bakeware as intended and follow the manufacturer’s instructions; look for product-specific food-contact or safety documentation when evaluating a set.

The FDA’s December 12, 2024 letter to retailers and distributors of cookware concerns certain imported cookware made from aluminum, brass and named aluminum alloys that showed potential to leach lead under testing designed to mimic food contact. Its September 12, 2025 consumer update warns about those specific imported cookware types. These alerts should not be generalized to all aluminum bakeware. The letter states, “There is no known safe level of exposure to lead”; in context, this is a general statement about lead exposure, while the letter’s cookware concern is specific.
