Yes—an online EDB-to-PST converter can extract mailbox data from a supported offline Exchange database without a running Exchange Server, but the free option described here is limited to an EDB file up to 500 MB. Stellar says its browser-based service accepts one EDB per free session, lets you preview mailboxes and folders, and delivers individual PST files in a ZIP archive. Before uploading, weigh that convenience against your data-handling rules; for mailboxes still accessible on Exchange, Microsoft’s native export is a different route that does not require uploading an offline database to a converter.
First decide what you have: an EDB file or an accessible mailbox
An EDB is an Exchange database file. Converting an offline EDB means extracting mailbox data directly from that file. Exporting a mailbox that is still available on a running Exchange Server is a separate administrative task, and Exchange provides native mailbox-export tools for it.

This distinction determines the right route. A browser-based EDB converter may suit a supported database that is no longer available through a functioning Exchange environment. If the mailbox is accessible on Exchange, Microsoft documents PST export through Exchange’s Mailbox Replication service (MRS): “Exchange Server uses the Microsoft Exchange Mailbox Replication service (MRS) to import .pst files to mailboxes, and export mailboxes to .pst files.” See Microsoft Learn: Mailbox imports and exports in Exchange Server.

Stellar describes a browser workflow for uploading a supported EDB, previewing mailbox folders, and downloading the resulting PST files in a ZIP archive. Its page says the online workflow does not require Outlook or a running Exchange Server. These are the vendor’s stated capabilities, not independently tested results. See Stellar Online EDB Converter.

| Stellar online tier or term | Stated limit or condition |
|---|---|
| Free | One EDB file per session, up to 500 MB; converted output is stated to be available for 24 hours. |
| Premium | Online EDB size limit stated as up to 5 GB; converted output is stated to be available for 48 hours. |
| After the stated retention period | Stellar says output is automatically deleted. |
These limits and retention periods are Stellar’s claims on its page accessed October 7, 2026; confirm the current terms before relying on them. The free limit is a ceiling, not a guarantee that every EDB up to that size will convert successfully.
How to convert an offline EDB online
- Check the source and size. Confirm that you have an offline EDB file rather than a mailbox you can export from Exchange. Check the file size against Stellar’s stated free limit of 500 MB per session, or the online Premium limit of 5 GB.
- Confirm you are authorized to upload it. Mailbox databases can contain sensitive or regulated information. Check organizational security, privacy, retention, and authorization requirements before sending the file to an online service.
- Upload the EDB through the converter page. Stellar describes the process as browser-based and says Exchange Server and Outlook are not required for this route.
- Review the preview. Inspect the listed mailboxes and folder structure to check that the expected data appears before downloading.
- Download and validate the PST files. The service says it packages individual PST files in a ZIP archive. Preserve the original EDB and verify the extracted files in an appropriate environment before treating them as a complete recovery. Stellar says the original is not modified, but that statement has not been independently verified.
Choose the route that matches your situation
| Route | Best fit | Key requirements and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Exchange native mailbox export | The mailbox is accessible on Exchange Server and an administrator can perform the export. | Microsoft says the Mailbox Import Export role is required and exports use MRS. Microsoft’s current Outlook documentation supports PST files up to 50 GB and recommends avoiding imports or exports above that size. See Microsoft Learn. |
| Exchange eDiscovery export | You need PST output from selected mailbox or public-folder search results for compliance or investigation. | This exports search results, not an arbitrary offline EDB. Permissions are required; deduplication and inclusion of unsearchable items are available options. See Microsoft Purview: Export eDiscovery search results. |
| Browser-based EDB converter | You have a supported offline EDB within the stated online size limit and your data policy permits uploading it. | Stellar states a free limit of 500 MB and one database per free session, with an online maximum of 5 GB on Premium. Its stated output-retention windows are 24 hours for Free and 48 hours for Premium. These are vendor claims; see Stellar Online EDB Converter. |
| Desktop EDB converter | The database exceeds online limits, or local processing or additional export options are important. | Desktop vendors describe options for offline or live conversion and additional formats, but compatibility, feature availability, trial limits, and pricing vary. Check the current product documentation before choosing this route: Stellar Converter for EDB and SysTools EDB to PST Converter. |
Consider privacy and retention before uploading mailbox data
Stellar says its online service uses an encrypted connection and automatically deletes Free output after 24 hours and Premium output after 48 hours. Those are the vendor’s representations, not an independent security assessment. A deletion window or encrypted transfer does not establish that uploading is permitted under your organization’s policy or applicable privacy and retention obligations.

- Obtain the required approval before uploading organizational or client mailbox data.
- Check whether the database contains records subject to legal hold, retention rules, or restrictions on third-party processing.
- Keep an unchanged copy of the source EDB and control access to both it and the downloaded PSTs.
- Verify the resulting PSTs before relying on them for recovery, migration, or compliance work.
When the free online option is not a fit
If your EDB exceeds the stated 500 MB free limit, the online Premium limit is stated as 5 GB. Stellar says its desktop edition is for larger files; desktop tools may also suit people who require local processing, but their compatibility and capabilities should be checked against current vendor documentation. If you can access the mailbox through Exchange, use the native export path instead of treating an offline-database converter as necessary.
For any PST route, size matters: Microsoft’s 2026 documentation says current Outlook versions support PST files up to 50 GB and recommends avoiding imports or exports above that size. That figure concerns PST handling in current Outlook versions; it is not an EDB upload limit or a promise that a converter will create a single PST of that size.
