Before your first shop, check three things: whether loyalty discounts require a linked account, how the store handles damaged or unsatisfactory groceries, and the full cost and conditions of delivery. Supermarket policies vary by retailer, location, and shopping method, so treat examples below as prompts to check your chosen store’s current local terms.
What to check before your first shop
- Compare the final checkout total for the same sample basket, including discounts, delivery fees, and any below-minimum charge.
- Find out whether loyalty enrollment is free, how to identify your account, and whether online and in-store benefits match.
- Check the returns or help page for the affected products, reporting deadlines, and available remedies.
- Confirm delivery coverage for your address, slot availability, basket minimums, and any pass restrictions before paying.
Will you get the loyalty price?
Do not assume that a sale price appears automatically or that one loyalty account works identically in every channel. Check how to enroll, whether you need a card or can use an account or phone number, and whether offers must be activated. If you shop both online and in a store, verify that the same account is linked in both places.

Safeway’s US online terms illustrate why this matters: supplying loyalty information during online registration typically connects online benefits with the in-store card or phone number. The terms also describe a virtual loyalty number that can provide online discounts without connecting other online-earned benefits to an existing in-store account. Online discounts may differ from physical-store discounts, and a partner banner fulfilling an order may set its pricing and rewards. Check the privacy trade-off
Loyalty enrollment is also a choice about personal data. Before joining, review what information the program collects, how it may be used or shared, whether you can control sharing, and how targeted advertising works. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s Supermarkets Inquiry 2024–2025 Interim Report discusses concerns including unclear terms and privacy disclosures, changes to program terms, and limited consumer control over some third-party sharing and targeted advertising. It cites approximately 2,000 reports about loyalty programs in an ACCC 2019 report covering the five years to December 2018; that is a historical figure, not a current annual count or evidence about every program. Can you return groceries that are bad or incorrect?
Policies can distinguish between products that spoil quickly and other goods, and the remedy may depend on the problem and when you report it. Check whether the policy covers damaged, faulty, mis-described, incomplete, missing, or substituted items; whether it offers a refund, replacement, or credit; and what proof of purchase or reporting deadline applies. Keep the receipt or order details and, where useful, a photo of the issue.

ASDA’s UK grocery terms give one retailer-specific example. For non-perishable goods reported as damaged, faulty, mis-described, or incomplete, the terms describe available remedies. For goods liable to deteriorate or expire rapidly, its quality policy says to contact ASDA before the indicated use-by or best-before date, or within seven days for loose goods without such a date. ASDA also says applicable UK or national consumer legislation and manufacturer guarantees are not affected. These are ASDA terms, not universal deadlines or a substitute for checking local law. ASDA also offers a “Try Me Love Me” promise for qualifying own-brand products carrying that packaging mark: contacting customer service can result in a refund and an e-voucher of equivalent value for a replacement on a later online shop. What does grocery delivery really cost?
Compare the complete checkout cost, not just the advertised delivery fee. Check whether your address is served, which slots are available, the minimum basket value, what happens below it, and whether express service, bags, or a missed delivery can add charges. For collection, check its own minimum and fees rather than assuming it follows delivery rules.

Decide whether a delivery pass is worthwhile
A pass only saves money if the orders you expect to place qualify and the fees it replaces exceed the pass cost. Compare your likely number of standard deliveries with the pass conditions, including any minimum spend, excluded slot types, and renewal terms. If your orders are infrequent, small, or often need express slots, a pass may not fit your shopping pattern. Do the calculation using the fee and terms shown by your chosen retailer; no single break-even figure applies to every household.
Before paying, check the delivery terms and the actual checkout for your address and basket. Slot availability and eligibility can change, so a pass or advertised fee is not a guarantee that every desired order qualifies.

How to compare supermarkets fairly
Build the same sample basket at each store and compare the final amount at checkout. Record the loyalty discount actually applied, any delivery or below-minimum charge, and whether the slot and items you need are available. Then check the policies that a price comparison cannot show:
- Loyalty: Enrollment cost, account or card requirements, offer activation, online versus in-store differences, points expiry, treatment of points after returns, and data use or sharing.
- Returns and quality: Covered products and problems, reporting deadlines, proof requirements, refund or replacement options, and how missing or substituted items are handled.
- Delivery and collection: Service area, slot windows and availability, basket minimums, below-minimum fees, express or missed-delivery charges, and any limits on passes.
Use the account-registration details for loyalty linking, the returns or help page for quality problems, and the live checkout for delivery fees and eligibility. Check the current local terms before relying on a policy example from another country or retailer.
