Compare a realistic local basket rather than relying on a chain’s reputation for low prices: prices, ranges, hours, and delivery options vary by location and change over time.
Compare the cost of your real grocery basket
Make a short list of repeat purchases and quantities that reflect how your household shops. Compare the same products—or the closest genuinely comparable alternatives—at supermarkets you could realistically visit or order from. Add up the basket using prices available to you, including any qualifying offer prices and relevant delivery or fulfilment charges.

A shelf price alone can mislead when packages differ in size. Where available, use the unit price—the cost per a standard measure such as kilogram, litre, or item—to compare similar products. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says unit prices help consumers compare similar products. Do not treat a larger pack as better value automatically. If food is likely to expire or go to waste, the lower price per unit may not make it the better purchase for your household. The UK Competition and Markets Authority’s 2024 consumer research found that some participants considered bulk comparisons less suitable for fresh food when waste was a concern. Check that unit prices use comparable measures
Unit-price labels can be inconsistent or difficult to read. The CMA reported issues including different measures for the same product and problems with promotional labels. Canada’s federal consumer guidance described voluntary unit-price displays outside Quebec as non-standardized at the time of publication. If the labels use different measures, check the package quantities and calculate a common unit before comparing; do not treat unlike measures as equivalent.
Rules and availability differ by jurisdiction. Australia requires most supermarkets and online grocery stores to display unit pricing under the applicable code. Canadian federal guidance describes a different legal context, including no general mandatory requirement outside Quebec at the time of that guidance. Singapore’s competition regulator describes a unit-pricing pilot at selected participating outlets, not a requirement or practice established for every supermarket. Evaluate loyalty prices and promotions on their terms
First check which price applies to you: a loyalty price may require membership or another qualifying condition. Then compare that price with the same item and your overall basket elsewhere. A member discount on selected products does not establish that the whole shop is cheapest at that store.

In its 2024 UK review, the CMA analysed around 50,000 grocery products with loyalty-price promotions and found very little evidence that retailers inflated usual prices to make offers appear better. The CMA’s 2024 UK survey found that 69% of respondents said loyalty pricing had not changed how much they compared supermarket prices, while 24% said they compared more. Respondents reported regularly shopping at an average of three supermarkets. These are findings about surveyed UK shoppers, not a recommendation that everyone should make multiple trips. Check selection at the branch or service you would use
A chain’s range is useful only if the store or delivery service you use stocks the items that matter to you. Check availability locally, especially for particular brands, dietary needs, fresh foods, and household staples. A physical branch and the same retailer’s online service may not offer identical ranges.

Account for the trip and fulfilment
Compare the practical experience as well as the till total. For an in-person shop, consider travel time, opening hours, accessibility, and parking or public transport. For an online order, check delivery slots, minimum order requirements, and fees. These details are local and can change, so confirm them directly with the branch or service.
Make the choice that fits your routine
Use the same repeat-purchase basket to compare plausible local options, then weigh price against the range and trip or delivery arrangements. You can choose one supermarket for most of your shop or use more than one if the savings and convenience make sense for you; the UK survey finding that respondents regularly used an average of three supermarkets does not mean that approach suits every household.

For shoppers in Australia, the ACCC says that from 1 July 2026 excessive grocery pricing is unlawful for some supermarket retailers under Australia’s Food and Grocery Code.
