Whether that makes streaming better for you depends on the device, your TV, your Wi-Fi, and which services are available where you live. The title’s original author and device are not independently confirmed, so this guide focuses on what an external player can do and what to check before choosing one.
What changes when you use an external streaming device?
You connect the player to the TV through HDMI, then use the TV’s HDMI input to view the player’s interface. Apps and navigation come from the external device rather than the television’s built-in platform. The TV remains the screen and speakers; the player supplies the streaming interface.

This can be useful if you prefer the external device’s interface, remote, or available apps. It does not establish that every TV’s built-in apps are slow, unreliable, or outdated, or that an external player will improve performance in every home. Connection quality, the device, and the service all matter.

What to check before choosing a streaming stick
Your TV’s ports and picture support
Confirm that the TV has an available HDMI input. If you want 4K or a particular HDR format, check that the TV supports it too; a streaming player cannot add picture capabilities the television lacks. The content must also be available in the format you want.

Apps in your country
Check the device’s app catalogue for your country before buying. Roku says app availability can vary by country and change over time. Some films, shows, or services may require a separate subscription or payment, even when an app is available.

Wi-Fi where the TV is installed
The player needs an internet connection for streaming. Consider the strength and stability of Wi-Fi at the TV’s location; replacing the app platform does not fix a weak or inconsistent network connection.

- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
Remote and interface preferences
Consider whether you want voice control, how you prefer to navigate, and whether you want the streaming device’s remote to control any TV functions. These are day-to-day usability choices, not guarantees of faster playback.
Any extra costs
Separate the cost of the player from the cost of watching: services may charge their own subscription or rental fees. Confirm the services and content you actually use rather than assuming that a device purchase includes them.

How to set up an external player
- Connect it: Plug the streaming stick into an available HDMI port on the TV. Follow the device’s instructions for power.
- Select the input: On the TV, choose the HDMI input where the player is connected.
- Join Wi-Fi: Follow the on-screen setup to connect the player to your network.
- Check picture and apps: Confirm the output matches the TV’s supported resolution and HDR formats, then look for your preferred services in the device’s app catalogue for your country.
How to decide whether to stop using the TV’s apps
Try an external device if its interface or app availability better fits your needs, or if you want a separate streaming platform from the one built into the TV. Keep using the TV’s apps if they already provide the services and experience you want. The available information does not support a universal speed or reliability advantage for external players over built-in apps, nor a performance ranking among streaming-device brands.
