To transfer contacts from a Samsung Galaxy phone to Google, open Contacts > Menu > Manage contacts > Sync contacts, turn on the Google account you want to use, and tap Sync. If contacts are stored as Phone, Device, Local, or on a SIM card, use Google’s separate device-and-SIM backup setting instead. Check the account’s contact list online before changing sync settings.
Choose the method based on where the contacts are stored
Samsung Contacts can display entries from multiple accounts and storage locations, so seeing a contact in the app does not necessarily mean it is saved to Google. First identify the account or location shown for the contacts you want to move.

- Already saved to Google: Sign into that Google account on the Galaxy and enable contact sync. Google says contacts sync to Android after sign-in and changes sync across devices. If several Google accounts are signed in, contacts from each may appear on the phone; select and verify the intended account. Google’s Android contact-sync instructions.
- Saved as Phone, Device, Local, or on a SIM: Use Google’s device-and-SIM backup setting if the phone and account support it. This is a distinct process from syncing an existing Google account. Google’s device and SIM backup instructions.
- Synced from another cloud service: Google says contacts from services such as Exchange or Yahoo cannot be automatically saved as Google contacts through device/SIM backup. Import them using an appropriate import workflow instead. Google’s device and SIM backup instructions.
- Moving to a new Galaxy: Samsung Smart Switch can transfer contacts and other supported data to a new Galaxy. It is a broader phone-migration option; syncing the Google account is the more direct route when the goal is to save contacts to Google on the current phone. Sync a Google account in Samsung Contacts
- Connect the Galaxy to the internet and sign into the Google account where you want the contacts stored.
- Open the Contacts app and tap Menu (three horizontal lines).
- Tap Manage contacts > Sync contacts.
- Turn on the intended Google account, then tap Sync.
- Check the account’s contact list online to confirm that the contacts are there.
Samsung’s general Galaxy instructions say menu names or locations can vary by model and software version. Its guide also advises checking or backing up existing contacts in the Google account first, because contacts can be deleted as a result of sync errors. When Google Contacts sync is working, Google describes the result this way: “When you change a contact, that contact will change everywhere.” That applies to contacts synced with the account; it does not mean every local, SIM, or third-party-cloud contact is automatically converted. Back up local or SIM contacts as Google contacts
For contacts stored only on the device or SIM, Google documents an automatic backup option. The setting is Android-only, may not be available on every device, and its route can differ by Android version.
- Open Settings. Depending on your Android version, start from your profile icon or go to Google.
- Open All services > Backup & restore > Google Contacts sync.
- Select the Google account that should receive the contacts and open View settings.
- Under Sync options, enable Backup device-only & SIM contacts automatically.
Google says this setting saves existing and future device-only and SIM contacts as Google contacts. It allows only one destination Google account, is unavailable for child and Google Workspace accounts, and depends on device make and model. Check that the contacts reached the right account
- Confirm the destination account in Samsung Contacts or Google’s device/SIM backup settings before starting.
- After syncing or backing up, check that account’s Contacts list online. The phone app may show contacts from several accounts and local stores, so the phone display alone is not proof that they reached Google.
- If automatic sync is off, Google says you can refresh manually by pulling down in the Google Contacts app. Google’s Android contact-sync instructions.
- Do not turn off Google contact sync until pending changes have reached the account. Google warns that disabling sync removes Google contacts from the device and can lose local changes that have not synced. Google’s Android contact-sync instructions.
When importing or moving contacts to another Galaxy makes more sense
If contacts are managed by another cloud service, use an import route rather than expecting the device/SIM backup option to convert them. On the Galaxy S23 series, Samsung’s manual describes Contacts > Manage contacts > Import contacts for importing from other storage. It also gives an S23-family account-sync route: Settings > Accounts and backup > Manage accounts > [account] > Sync account > Contacts. Those paths are specific to the S23 series and should not be assumed to match every Galaxy model. The manual also documents Contacts > Manage contacts > Merge contacts for combining duplicates.
