Before you preorder a PC game, verify three things on the exact store listing: what each edition contains, when and how you can obtain a refund, and whether your computer meets the game’s stated requirements. Those details vary by storefront, product, payment method, region, and applicable consumer law. A preorder is not automatically protected by one universal refund rule.
Steam, Epic Games Store, and Microsoft Store currently describe materially different conditions. The practical approach is to treat the listing and the seller’s policy as part of the purchase decision, not as details to check after launch.

Why a preorder needs more checking than a normal PC purchase
A preorder commits money before the final release experience is available. Marketing pages may describe future downloadable content, cosmetic items, a soundtrack, virtual currency, or a period of play before the official launch, but the value and timing of those items are specific to the game. The same label—such as Deluxe, Gold, or Ultimate—does not guarantee the same contents from one title to another.
Refund protection also depends on where you buy. A platform’s policy may apply only to purchases made through its own checkout, and a third-party key seller can impose different terms. Regional consumer law can add rights that are not visible in a store’s general policy. For that reason, save the product page, refund designation, order confirmation, and edition contents at the time you buy.

Refund rules by storefront
The following summaries reflect official US-facing guidance available on October 13, 2026. Policies can change, and your region or the individual product listing may control the result.

Can I refund a pre-ordered game on Steam?
Steam’s official “Pre-Order Refunds” guidance says you may refund a preorder at any time before the game’s release. Once the game releases, the request must be submitted within 14 days of release and total playtime must be below two hours. This is a release-based rule: buying months earlier does not start the ordinary post-release clock.
Advance Access changes the pre-release cutoff. If the preorder lets you play before the official release, the pre-release refund deadline is before Advance Access starts. Playing during that period does not preserve an unlimited pre-release option. After the official release, Steam says the standard two-week and two-hour conditions apply.

Epic requires you to inspect the product’s refund designation. A PC or Mac product marked “refundable” or “self-refundable” is covered by the stated policy: 14 days from purchase for an ordinary purchase, or 14 days after release for a pre-purchase, with less than two hours of runtime. Epic says an eligible self-refundable preorder can be refunded before release.
Do not assume every bundle qualifies. Products containing virtual currency or consumables may be marked non-refundable. Check the label on the actual game and examine every component in a bundle before paying. Epic’s policy also discusses statutory withdrawal rights in the European Union and the possibility that a buyer may be asked to waive those rights at purchase. Those rights and waivers depend on the transaction and jurisdiction.

What Microsoft’s billing schedule means
Microsoft’s digital-preorder guidance focuses first on when you are charged. Account-balance payments are charged immediately; other payment methods may be charged as much as 10 days before release. If you cancel after billing but before release, Microsoft says the digital preorder is processed as a refund.
That statement should not be read as a Steam-style guarantee for every PC digital purchase. Microsoft also states that PC digital goods generally are not refundable unless a particular offer or applicable law says otherwise. Review the order’s terms, payment status, product description, and regional rules before assuming a refund is available.

How to cancel or request a refund safely
- Identify the seller. Confirm whether the transaction was made through Steam, Epic checkout, Microsoft Store, a console-linked marketplace, a payment intermediary, or a third-party key seller. The seller that took payment normally controls the first refund request.
- Open the platform’s purchase-support flow. Use the account that made the purchase and select the specific preorder. Record the order number, purchase date, release date, and the amount charged.
- Check the relevant clock. For Steam, determine whether the game has released and whether Advance Access has started. For Epic, verify the “refundable” or “self-refundable” label and runtime. For Microsoft, check whether the preorder has already been billed.
- Stop launching the game while eligibility is uncertain. Playtime can matter. Epic and Steam both state a two-hour threshold in the circumstances described above.
- Submit the request before the applicable deadline. Keep the confirmation message and note whether the request was accepted, pending, or denied.
- Escalate with evidence if necessary. If a product page displayed a refund designation that differs from the order result, provide screenshots of the listing, receipt, and policy language. For a third-party purchase, use that seller’s support and terms rather than the platform’s process.
A refund approval is not necessarily an instant reversal. The platform may return funds to the original payment method or apply its own processing schedule. The important first step is making a timely request under the terms that governed the transaction.
How to compare editions without paying for promises
There is no standard industry definition for Base, Deluxe, Gold, Ultimate, or similar names. Compare the game’s actual editions line by line rather than paying for a label.

Calculate the price difference against the content you would actually use. A pass for future expansions may be worthwhile only if you expect to play those expansions; cosmetic items and currency have little practical value if you would not buy them separately.

Advance Access is not the same as Early Access
Steam calls pre-release play “Advance Access.” Valve describes it as an opportunity to play a game before it fully releases on Steam, not as a separate development model. The publisher or developer decides whether to offer it, and the store listing identifies which preorder versions include it.

Advance Access also affects refunds on Steam: the pre-release refund deadline ends when Advance Access starts. If playing early matters to you, read the start date and time rather than relying on a countdown, time-zone assumption, or retailer advertisement.
How to know if your PC can run a game
Open the exact game listing on the storefront where you will buy it and locate “System Requirements.” Steam says the page lists supported operating systems and hardware requirements. Compare the complete specification, not just the graphics-card name.
- Verify the operating system. Confirm the edition and version are supported. Note any requirement for a 64-bit operating system or another specific platform component.
- Compare the processor. Match your CPU model to the listed minimum and recommended processor. Similar branding does not mean equal performance across generations.
- Compare graphics hardware. Check the exact GPU model and its available video memory where the listing specifies it. Integrated graphics should not be assumed to match a similarly named discrete card.
- Check memory and storage. Compare installed RAM with the requirement and ensure the drive has enough free space for the game and updates. If the listing names an SSD, treat that as a functional requirement rather than an optional upgrade.
- Check additional software or platform requirements. A game may require a launcher, account, online connection, or other component listed on its page.
- Interpret “minimum” correctly. Minimum requirements are a compatibility floor, not a promise of a frame rate, resolution, graphics preset, or stutter-free experience.
Steam warns that a computer at or near the published requirements can still experience performance or launch problems. If your hardware is close to the minimum, wait for independent performance testing or a playable demo when one is available instead of treating a “recommended” label as a guarantee.

Why requirements can be misleading
Published requirements rarely state the exact settings used to reach a target frame rate. A minimum configuration might be intended for low settings at a particular resolution, while a recommended configuration may assume a different preset. CPU-heavy simulation, shader compilation, background software, driver versions, and patches can all change the result after launch.
Requirements are also game-specific. You cannot infer one title’s needs from another game built on the same engine, and you cannot determine the exact requirements, release timing, edition contents, or preorder bonuses without the named game’s live listing.

- Record the storefront, seller, region, refund designation, and payment method.
- Check whether the product contains virtual currency or consumables that may be non-refundable.
- Note when Microsoft will charge your selected payment method if buying there.
- Compare your operating system, CPU, GPU, RAM, and storage with the game’s own System Requirements section.
- Treat minimum specifications as a floor and account for the possibility of launch or performance problems near that floor.
- Use a third-party seller only after reading that seller’s terms; the platform’s policy may not apply.
- Keep the receipt and a copy of the listing in case the edition contents or refund designation later changes.

Assuming every store has Steam’s two-hour rule
Steam’s thresholds do not automatically apply to Epic or Microsoft. Epic’s two-hour condition is tied to products carrying the appropriate refund label, while Microsoft’s published guidance emphasizes billing and generally limits PC digital refunds unless an offer or law applies.
Waiting until after Advance Access begins
On Steam, an Advance Access preorder must be refunded before that access period starts to use the pre-release option. A buyer who waits for the official release may instead face the post-release two-week and under-two-hour conditions.
Confusing a higher price with more playable content
An expensive tier may primarily contain cosmetics, digital files, or future content. Read the itemized list and decide whether each component has value to you before treating the tier as an upgrade.
Buying for a PC that is only barely compatible
Meeting a listed requirement does not establish a target frame rate or eliminate launch issues. Near the minimum, postpone the purchase until reliable testing or a demo provides evidence for your hardware.
Buying a key without checking the point of sale
Epic explicitly limits its stated policy to purchases made through Epic checkout and directs other transactions to the terms at the point of purchase. A code bought elsewhere may have a different refund process, activation region, or support channel.
What to verify on release day
Before launching, confirm that the game appears in the correct account and that the promised edition items are visible in the game, downloadable-content manager, or library details. If an item is scheduled for later, the listing should identify that timing. Keep your playtime below the applicable threshold while you decide whether the game works on your system and whether the delivered edition matches the description.

If the game fails to launch, document the error, operating-system version, hardware, and time played. Those details help support distinguish a technical problem from an eligibility question, although neither documentation nor a failed launch creates a refund right beyond the applicable policy or law.
