What to Know Before Moving Automations to a Self-Hosted Platform

Self-hosting can provide more control over an automation environment, but migration and ongoing operations vary by platform. Check transfer limits, feature fit, security duties, and licensing before you move.

Moving automations to a self-hosted platform can give you more control over where and how the system runs, but it also makes you responsible for operating that system. Before migrating, verify the actual workflow and credential transfer path, confirm that the self-hosted edition supports the features you need, and account for ongoing security, maintenance, and licensing work.

First, confirm how your automations will move

Do not assume that exporting workflows also migrates everything they depend on. Migration behavior is platform-specific. For the example covered here, n8n says there is currently no automated way to migrate from n8n Cloud to self-hosted n8n. Workflows can be imported, but Cloud credentials cannot be exported for security reasons and must be entered again manually after import. Read n8n’s Cloud-to-self-hosted migration guidance.

Before choosing a migration date, inventory the workflows you intend to move and identify their credentials, integrations, and other platform-specific dependencies. Determine how you will re-create and verify those dependencies in the destination. The n8n limitation applies to that particular Cloud-to-self-hosted route; it does not establish how another automation service handles migration.

Decide whether you can own day-to-day operations

Self-hosting is not just installing software on a server. It shifts responsibility for the running environment to you or your team. n8n lists Docker, npm, Docker Compose, and cloud providers among its deployment options, and documents configuration, security, monitoring, logging, tracing, updates, and architecture as parts of self-hosted operation. Its deployment overview describes self-hosting as control over how the product runs and how its environment is managed. See n8n’s hosting documentation and deployment overview.

Use the responsibilities below as a practical ownership check. Assign a person or team to each before migration; an unassigned task is an operational gap.

  • Deployment and configuration: choose and manage a deployment method and maintain the settings the instance needs.
  • Updates: track and apply software updates, including the operational work needed to do so safely.
  • Monitoring and response: watch system health, investigate failures, and decide who responds when an automation or the platform stops working.
  • Logs and tracing: ensure you can investigate what happened when a workflow behaves unexpectedly.
  • Security: review and maintain the controls around the instance and its environment.

The listed deployment choices do not establish a universally best option or a server size that suits every workload. Choose based on your requirements and on the operational capability you can sustain.

Check features and edition fit before importing

A self-hosted installation may not give you every capability you used or expected from a managed plan. n8n says feature availability varies by plan and edition and can change. Compare your requirements with its current official plan and pricing information before committing.

  • Works with thousands of Alexa compatible devices — WiFi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, Matter, Sidewalk, and Thread devices sync seamlessly with the built-in smart home hub.

Make a requirements list rather than relying on a general claim that one edition is more capable. Check whether your intended setup supports the governance, sharing, storage, secrets, and scaling capabilities your workflows or team need. Confirm the current availability for the plan or edition you would actually use.

Include security review in the migration plan

Moving an automation platform into an environment you control does not, by itself, make that environment secure. n8n provides a security audit intended to detect common issues; treat it as one review tool, not proof that an installation is secure. See n8n’s security-audit documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan for ongoing security work as well as the initial review. In particular, decide who maintains the instance, reviews access, applies updates, and handles a security incident. The audit documentation is not a complete security baseline, so do not use a successful audit as a substitute for those responsibilities.

Check that your use is permitted by the license

Licensing can depend on what you do with the instance, not only on whether you run it yourself. n8n’s licensing FAQ says an Enterprise license is required when you host and manage clients’ workflows and credentials in your own internal instance. For other business arrangements, review n8n’s current official terms rather than assuming that the same answer applies.

Compare the full operating burden, not hosting price alone

A useful comparison weighs what you gain in control against the migration work and responsibilities you take on. Hosting cost alone does not capture the staff time and operating work involved, and the available evidence does not establish a general savings figure for moving to self-hosting.

Decision area What to establish before moving
Migration friction Whether workflows can be exported and imported, which credentials need re-entry, and which platform-specific dependencies must be recreated.
Operational ownership Who deploys, configures, updates, monitors, and responds to failures in the destination environment.
Capability and governance Whether the selected plan or edition currently supports the sharing, governance, storage, secrets, and scaling needs you have.
Security and control What control you need over the environment and who will secure, review, and maintain it.
Use case and licensing Whether your arrangement is covered by the applicable terms, especially if you host client workflows and credentials.
Total operating burden Infrastructure expense plus the time and expertise needed to run the platform, rather than the hosting bill in isolation.

A practical pre-migration checklist

  1. Document what is moving. List the workflows, credentials, integrations, and platform-specific dependencies involved.
  2. Verify the migration route. Check the current guidance for your source and destination products. For n8n Cloud to self-hosted n8n, plan to import workflows and enter Cloud credentials again manually.
  3. Select a deployment approach you can operate. Compare the supported deployment methods for your chosen platform against the skills and maintenance capacity you have.
  4. Validate edition and feature requirements. Check the current official plan or edition information for the capabilities your team needs.
  5. Assign operational ownership. Name owners for configuration, updates, monitoring, logs and tracing, security review, and incident response.
  6. Review security and licensing. Use available audit tools as one part of a broader security process, and confirm that your intended use complies with current terms.
  7. Compare total effort and cost. Include infrastructure and the people-hours and expertise needed to keep the system reliable; do not base the decision on hosting price alone.
  8. Test the destination before relying on it. Import a representative workflow, restore its dependencies, and verify that it runs as expected before making the self-hosted instance the production destination.
