Choose an external drive by starting with the size of the disk images you need to keep, then check that your computer and imaging software support its connection and file system. For images written occasionally and read mainly for recovery, a portable hard disk drive (HDD) is a practical capacity-oriented choice; pick a solid-state drive (SSD) if faster transfers and portability matter more. Keep another copy of important images rather than relying on one external drive alone.
Work out how much capacity you need
Use the actual size of your existing image files, or the expected size of a new image, as your starting point. Add room for growth and decide how many dated versions you want to retain. A system image can include the operating system, programs and other computer data, so it may be larger than the contents of a single documents folder.

There is no universal capacity threshold for disk images. Seagate lists portable Backup Plus configurations of 1TB, 2TB, 4TB and 5TB, but those are product examples, not a sizing rule; check current availability and specifications before buying. Its portable drive page also lists current product offerings. Choose usable capacity based on your own image sizes, growth and retention plan.

Choose between an HDD and an SSD
| Consideration | Portable HDD | External SSD |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Images written infrequently and read mainly during a restore | When quicker transfers and portable use matter more |
| Technology | Uses spinning disks | Uses solid-state storage |
| Performance | Depends on drive and transfer conditions | Depends on drive and transfer conditions |
| Capacity at a given budget | Compare current models and prices for your requirements | Compare current models and prices for your requirements |
Seagate explains the HDD/SSD distinction and notes that actual performance depends on transfer conditions in its performance guidance. The available evidence does not establish a current price ranking or independently tested model performance. Compare candidate drives at the capacity you need rather than assuming one technology always wins on price or speed.

Check the connection before you buy
Confirm that the drive connector fits a port on your computer, directly or through an appropriate adapter, and that the host supports the interface. Seagate’s product and support pages list portable models with USB 3.0; Apple says Time Machine can use a directly connected USB or Thunderbolt external device. An interface label alone does not guarantee a particular transfer speed: the drive, computer, cable and transfer conditions all affect the result. See Seagate’s Backup Plus support page and Apple’s Time Machine disk guidance for their respective examples.
Match the file system to your computer and imaging utility
Do not choose a format only because it makes ordinary file sharing convenient. Your imaging software must be able to write the image to the drive and restore from it. Seagate describes NTFS as native to Windows and exFAT as compatible with Windows and macOS, while noting that exFAT is not journaled. Apple’s current Time Machine guidance prefers APFS or APFS Encrypted. These examples are not interchangeable guarantees for every backup application: confirm the requirements of your particular utility and operating system.

Formatting a drive erases its existing contents. Before formatting, copy anything you need to keep elsewhere. Seagate’s file-system comparison and Apple’s Time Machine guidance describe their respective compatibility considerations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsKeep another copy of important images
An external drive is a useful destination for disk images, but it should not be the only copy of data you cannot replace. Seagate defines a backup as a second copy of important data and describes the 3-2-1 approach as three copies including the original, on two media types, with one copy off-site or remote. This is guidance, not a guarantee of recovery. For more context, see Seagate’s backup explanation.

Compare candidate drives with this checklist
- Capacity: Will usable space accommodate your image files, expected growth and the number of versions you intend to keep?
- Connection: Does the drive’s connector work with your computer, and does the host support the interface?
- File system: Can your operating system and imaging utility write to and restore from the selected format?
- Workflow: Is your priority capacity for occasional image storage, or faster transfers and portable use?
- Support: Check the exact model’s current specifications and warranty rather than assuming they apply across a product family.
- Copies: Where will the additional copy of important images be kept?
