Glasses and contact lenses correct refractive error without surgery; procedures such as LASIK are elective operations intended to reduce dependence on corrective lenses, not guarantee lifelong freedom from them. If you are weighing both, first decide whether you want a reversible correction or are considering surgery, then discuss your prescription, eye health, goals, and risks with an ophthalmologist.
What “non-surgical vision correction” means
The phrase can mean glasses or contact lenses, which correct vision without permanently reshaping corneal tissue. It is also sometimes used loosely when people are comparing those options with refractive surgery. These are different choices: surgery may reduce how often you need glasses or contacts, but it cannot promise that you will never need them again.

This guide covers the main choices and how to prepare for an individualized evaluation. It cannot establish whether you are a candidate; that requires an eye examination. The medical guidance summarized here is primarily from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), so regulatory details may differ outside the United States.

| Option | What it does | What to discuss |
|---|---|---|
| Prescription eyeglasses | Correct vision externally, without an operation or permanent corneal reshaping. | Whether glasses meet your day-to-day vision needs and preferences. |
| Contact lenses | Correct vision while worn, without an operation or permanent corneal reshaping. | Whether contacts fit your activities and whether you would prefer to keep using them or explore another option. |
| Corneal procedures: LASIK, PRK, and SMILE | Use different surgical approaches to correct refractive error by treating the cornea. FDA materials describe LASIK and PRK as permanent corneal operations. | Whether the exact procedure and device are indicated for your prescription and eye measurements, along with recovery, residual correction, and potential further treatment. |
| Phakic intraocular lens | Adds an implanted lens inside the eye while leaving the natural lens in place. | In addition to suitability for your refractive error, the evaluation includes measurements such as anterior chamber depth and endothelial cell count. An implant inside the eye has a different risk and follow-up profile from corneal reshaping. |
| Refractive lens exchange | Replaces the natural lens with an implanted lens. | Whether this lens-based procedure fits your eye, refractive error, and visual goals, and how its risks and follow-up compare with other choices. |
This is an overview, not an exhaustive list or a ranking. The available indication depends on the procedure and device labeling; a treatment appropriate for one prescription or eye may not be appropriate for another. FDA and AAO guidance emphasizes that anatomy, health, goals, and the individual risk profile shape the choice.

What determines whether surgery is suitable
A checklist can help you prepare, but it cannot diagnose candidacy remotely. FDA recommends a baseline eye evaluation and a discussion of benefits, risks, alternatives, expectations, and your questions. The ophthalmologist should assess your eyes and health in the context of the specific procedure being considered.
Prescription, age, and stability
AAO says LASIK candidates generally should be adults—at least 18, and ideally older, when a stable prescription is more likely—and should have a prescription that has not changed much over the preceding year. The refractive error must fall within the treatment range for the proposed procedure and device. An unstable or extreme prescription may make LASIK unsuitable; candidacy for another procedure must be assessed separately.

Cornea, eye surface, and other eye conditions
For LASIK, AAO identifies sufficiently thick, healthy corneas and generally good eye health as important considerations. Thin, scarred, diseased, or unusually shaped corneas, including keratoconus, can affect suitability. Severe dry eye and other ocular-surface problems also matter. The evaluation may identify a reason to address an eye-surface problem first or to avoid a particular procedure.
Health, medicines, and activities
Tell the clinician about your general health, medications, work, and activities. AAO lists poorly controlled diabetes, certain infections, advanced glaucoma, and a cataract that affects vision among reasons someone may not be a LASIK candidate. FDA also flags conditions or medicines that can affect healing, pregnancy or nursing, large pupils in dim light, dry eye, thin corneas, and contact sports as topics for discussion. These are screening considerations, not a remote diagnosis or an automatic verdict for every procedure.

Measurements and contact-lens preparation
Contact lenses can temporarily change corneal shape and affect baseline measurements. FDA advises asking your doctor how long to stop wearing your lenses before the examination; do not assume one universal interval. For lens-based procedures, AAO describes additional measurements that can include corneal thickness, anterior chamber depth, and endothelial cell count.
Understand the limitations and risks
Many patients are pleased with their results, but sharp chart vision does not guarantee comfortable vision in every setting. AAO reports that about 9 out of 10 people who have LASIK end up with vision between 20/20 and 20/40 without glasses or contact lenses. That is an AAO-reported LASIK outcome range, published January 9, 2026—not a guarantee for an individual, a result for every procedure, or proof that glasses will never be needed.

Potential LASIK complications described by AAO and FDA include dry eye; glare, halos, starbursts, double vision, or light sensitivity; reduced low-light or low-contrast vision; under- or over-correction and residual prescription; additional treatment; infection; worsened best-corrected vision; and, rarely, loss of vision. Dry eye or changing vision may improve over time but can persist, and FDA warns that dry eye can be severe or permanent. The specific risks vary with the person, procedure, device, and surgeon. Do not apply a LASIK risk figure or outcome to PRK, SMILE, or an implanted lens.
Account for age-related near vision
Presbyopia is the normal age-related loss of close-up focusing ability. AAO says almost everyone with excellent distance vision will need reading glasses after around age 40, whether or not they have refractive surgery. As AAO puts it, “LASIK cannot correct presbyopia.”

Monovision is one approach sometimes used with LASIK: one eye is corrected for distance and the other for near vision. It does not restore youthful focusing ability and is not comfortable for everyone. AAO suggests trying monovision with contact lenses first to see whether you adapt before considering a surgical version.
How to prepare for the consultation
Ask for a recommendation based on your examination and the exact device or procedure proposed, rather than choosing from a checklist, advertisement, or price alone. Bring your current prescription and a list of your medications, eye conditions, relevant health conditions, work demands, and activities. Useful questions include:
- Which nonsurgical and surgical options address my prescription and goals, and what examination findings support or rule out each one?
- How do my corneal measurements, dry-eye status, pupil size, prescription stability, medications, health, occupation, or activities affect the choice?
- What patient information applies to this exact device and indication? FDA provides device-specific approval and labeling information.
- What outcomes and complications have you seen with this procedure and device, and what follow-up is included?
- How likely am I to need distance glasses, reading glasses, or additional treatment afterward? What symptoms could affect night driving?
- Is there a reason to wait, address an eye-surface problem first, or continue with glasses or contacts?
FDA advises patients to take time to consider the risk-benefit discussion and says they should not feel pressured to decide. It also cautions: “Don’t base your decision simply on cost and don’t settle for the first eye center, doctor, or procedure you investigate.” Ask to review information for the specific device and indication, and make sure the proposed benefits and trade-offs address your own priorities.
