The Canon EOS Rebel SL3—called the EOS 250D in Europe—is the clearest budget DSLR pick here if you want 4K recording and a vari-angle screen. Its 4K footage comes with a heavy crop, however, and Digital Camera World says its video autofocus is not the fastest. If you want a more advanced DSLR and can accept a narrower 4K view, consider the Nikon D7500; if Full HD is enough, a used Nikon D5600 may be an option.
Which budget DSLR is the best fit for video?
There is no single best choice for every video setup. The practical decision is whether you need 4K, how much cropping you can accept, and whether a screen that flips out will help you frame your shots. The comparison below stays within DSLR options; Digital Camera World notes that mirrorless cameras are often stronger for video, but that is outside this DSLR-focused shortlist.

| Camera | Best fit | Video strengths | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canon EOS Rebel SL3 / EOS 250D | A budget buyer who wants 4K and an articulated screen | 4K recording; vari-angle screen | 4K is heavily cropped; video autofocus is not the fastest, according to Digital Camera World |
| Nikon D7500 | A buyer who wants a more advanced all-round DSLR and accepts a crop | 4K recording; Full HD up to 60fps | 4K uses a 1.5× crop, narrowing the view; it is an ageing model |
| Nikon D5600 | A used-market buyer satisfied with Full HD | Full HD up to 60p | Discontinued and does not record 4K |
The D7500 and D5600 figures are reported by Digital Camera World in its 2026 DSLR video coverage. Canon identifies the European SL3 model as the EOS 250D; its official product specifications are the manufacturer reference for that model. The editorial assessment of the SL3 as a budget video pick comes from Digital Camera World, not Canon.

Canon EOS Rebel SL3 / EOS 250D
The vari-angle screen can make it easier to compose a shot when the camera is held at an unusual height or pointed toward the person recording. The important qualification is that the camera’s 4K is heavily cropped. That tighter framing can make it harder to capture a wide scene from the same camera position, so consider how you intend to frame your videos rather than treating “4K” as the only deciding specification. Digital Camera World also cautions that video autofocus is not the fastest; if you expect to move around in front of the camera while it tracks focus, that limitation matters.

Nikon D7500
The D7500’s 4K mode also crops the image: Digital Camera World reports a 1.5× crop. The same source lists Full HD recording up to 60fps. Choose it if the more advanced handling is attractive and you are comfortable with the narrower 4K view; do not assume that its 4K framing is equivalent to an uncropped recording.
When a Full HD DSLR makes more sense
The Nikon D5600 is worth considering only if Full HD meets your needs and you are open to buying a discontinued camera on the used market. Digital Camera World lists Full HD up to 60p and no 4K for this model. That makes it a poor match if 4K is a requirement, but a possible lower-cost route when resolution beyond Full HD is not part of your plan. Its discontinued status also makes the individual camera’s condition and the seller’s terms especially important.

How to choose for your filming setup
- Start with the resolution you will actually use. If 4K is essential, compare the SL3/250D and D7500 with their crop limitations in mind. If Full HD is enough, the D5600 can remain on your used-market shortlist.
- Think about framing. A crop tightens the view. Check whether the camera can capture the scene you want from the position where you can film.
- Consider how you will focus. The documented caution about the SL3/250D’s video autofocus is relevant if you want the camera to keep up with moving subjects; the available information here does not establish a comparative autofocus test across these models.
- Value screen articulation if it fits your workflow. The SL3/250D’s vari-angle screen is a useful feature to weigh when you need to monitor framing from in front of or beside the camera.
- For a used camera, inspect the exact listing. Check the camera’s condition, included lens, battery health, return terms, and regional model name. Prices and stock vary by market and can change, so a universal current price is not established.
Are these still budget choices?
“Budget” depends on your country, whether you are buying new or used, and what a listing includes. The available buying-guide coverage includes retailer listings, but it does not establish a stable current price or availability across regions. Compare live listings for the same model and condition, and confirm whether the lens and other included items match what you need. Do not treat the D5600’s discontinued status as proof that any particular used listing is a good value.
