Some funds own shares of energy companies; others hold crude-oil futures, options, swaps or related instruments. A futures-based fund can rise or fall very differently from the spot price of crude because of contract rolls, expenses, collateral income, trading conditions and the difference between an ETF’s market price and its net asset value (NAV).
Before buying, identify exactly what the fund owns or references, which benchmark it follows, how and when it rolls futures, whether it uses leverage, how liquid it is, and which tax form it issues. Treat the word “oil” in a fund name as a starting point for investigation, not as a promise to match the price of a barrel.

What an “oil ETF” can mean
There is no single economic product called an oil ETF. Exchange-listed funds use several structures, and each responds to a different set of market forces.
Energy-company equity funds
An equity fund owns shares of producers, refiners, pipeline operators, oil-field-service companies or a combination of them. Its return depends on corporate profits, debt, dividends, management decisions, hedging, regulation and the broader stock market as well as crude prices. A company can underperform while oil rises, or outperform while oil falls.

Crude-futures funds
A commodity fund seeks oil exposure through futures contracts and may also use options, forwards, swaps or other oil-related instruments. It does not represent ownership of stored barrels. The United States Oil Fund (USO), for example, says it seeks to reflect daily changes in the spot price of light, sweet crude delivered at Cushing through a specified futures benchmark, with collateral interest and expenses affecting the result.
USO’s June 30, 2026 quarterly report listed 22,431 NYMEX light, sweet crude-oil futures contracts. That is a dated holding count for one fund, not a statistic for the entire oil-ETF category.
Leveraged and inverse products
Some funds seek a multiple of a benchmark’s daily move or the inverse of that move. Daily objectives are reset each trading day. Over periods longer than one day, compounding can make the fund’s return differ substantially from the simple multiple or inverse of the oil price change. These products require a different risk assessment from unleveraged exposure.

Does an oil ETF track the price of oil?
Usually, it tracks a defined index or futures benchmark rather than the cash, or spot, price of a barrel. Four separate prices can affect what you see in your brokerage account:
- Spot oil: the price for oil delivered under a particular grade, location and timing. “Oil” is not one universal spot quote.
- Futures contracts: agreements for delivery or financial settlement at specified future dates. Their prices can move differently from spot.
- Fund NAV: the per-share value of the fund’s portfolio after valuing positions, collateral, liabilities and expenses.
- Exchange price: the price at which the ETF’s shares trade. It can be above or below NAV because of supply, demand, creation and redemption activity, market stress and trading frictions.
Each transition introduces tracking risk. The futures benchmark may not match spot; the fund’s NAV reflects expenses, collateral results and execution; and the exchange price may temporarily diverge from NAV. The United States Oil Fund prospectus puts the distinction plainly: "Investing in USO involves risks similar to those involved with an investment directly in the oil market, but it is not a proxy for trading directly in the oil markets."

How a futures-based oil fund creates exposure
1. It selects a benchmark
The fund’s prospectus identifies the crude grade, trading venue, contract maturities and weighting method. A benchmark may use the nearest contract, several months of contracts or a more specialized schedule. Read the methodology instead of assuming every fund follows the same WTI contract.
2. It posts collateral
Futures require margin rather than the full notional value of the contract. Cash and short-term instruments held as collateral can earn interest, while expenses and trading costs reduce returns. Collateral income can help or hurt relative performance depending on interest rates and the fund’s arrangements.

A futures contract expires. To maintain exposure, the fund sells a contract before expiry and buys another one according to its stated roll schedule. The sale and purchase prices, the timing of the transactions and market liquidity all affect the result.
4. It values the portfolio and issues shares
The portfolio is marked to market to calculate NAV. Authorized participants can create or redeem large blocks of shares, a process intended to keep the exchange price near NAV, but premiums and discounts can still appear, especially when markets are moving rapidly or the underlying futures market is closed.
Contango and backwardation: why the futures curve matters
The relationship among contract maturities is called the futures curve.

| Curve condition | Price relationship | Typical roll transaction | Potential effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Contango | Later-dated contracts cost more than nearer contracts | Sell the expiring contract at a relatively lower price and buy a later contract at a relatively higher price | The roll can create a negative return component, but the fund’s total result also depends on price moves, collateral, expenses and execution |
| Backwardation | Later-dated contracts cost less than nearer contracts | Sell the expiring contract at a relatively higher price and buy a later contract at a relatively lower price | The roll can create a positive return component, but it does not guarantee a gain for the fund |
Consider a simplified illustration. A fund sells one expiring contract for $70 and buys the next contract for $73 while the spot price has not changed. It now owns fewer units of future exposure for the same capital, before fees and collateral income. That is the mechanical reason a persistent contango can weigh on a futures fund. In backwardation, the opposite price relationship may help the roll. This example is educational, not a forecast; actual results depend on the entire market path and the fund’s rules.
Contango does not automatically mean an oil ETF will lose money, and backwardation does not automatically mean it will profit. A large move in crude prices can overwhelm the roll effect, while a fund’s specific contract selection, roll dates and expenses can produce a different outcome from a simple one-contract example.
Benchmark designs are not interchangeable
Official fund documents show why two products described as oil funds can behave differently.
| Fund or structure | What the official materials describe | What to verify before trading |
|---|---|---|
| USO | Seeks daily changes in the spot price of light, sweet crude delivered at Cushing through a specified futures benchmark; primarily uses crude and other petroleum-fuel futures and may use options, forwards, swaps and related instruments under stated conditions | Current prospectus, benchmark composition, roll calendar, expenses, collateral policy and premium/discount history |
| USL | Uses the near-month contract and the next 11 months. Once each month, the exposure changes to the next near month and its following 11 contracts during one day | The current methodology, weighting, one-day roll timing and how the 12-contract spread behaves in the prevailing curve |
| OILK | Uses a blend of separate WTI contract schedules and is not intended to track WTI spot | The current benchmark document, contract maturities, roll dates, expenses, liquidity and tax reporting |
These descriptions are not permanent specifications. Funds can amend prospectuses and methodologies, so use the latest official filing and shareholder report when you make a decision.
What to compare before buying
Intended exposure
First determine whether the fund owns company shares, a specified crude-futures basket, a broad commodity index, or a leveraged or inverse strategy. These exposures can have opposite results during the same oil-price move.

Contract grade, venue and schedule
Check whether the benchmark references WTI, Brent or another grade; where the contracts trade; which maturities are held; and exactly when the portfolio rolls. A near-month strategy is more sensitive to immediate supply conditions than a basket spread across many months.
Net and trading costs
Read the current expense ratio, brokerage commission or platform charges, bid-ask spread, creation and redemption costs, and any other stated expenses. Collateral interest treatment also matters. A low headline expense ratio does not eliminate the cost of trading an illiquid or volatile product.
Liquidity and NAV behavior
Review recent trading volume, the quoted spread and the history of premiums or discounts to NAV. The price you pay is the exchange price, not necessarily the fund’s portfolio value. Use limit orders when appropriate and understand that a limit order cannot guarantee execution.
Leverage, concentration and counterparties
Confirm whether the fund promises a daily multiple or inverse result. Examine margin requirements, counterparty exposure, concentration in a single contract or venue, and the possibility that trading may be restricted or costly during a market disruption.
Fund documents
Investor.gov recommends reviewing the prospectus and most recent shareholder report and considering whether the product fits your financial situation. Those documents contain the authoritative objective, principal risks, fees, holdings policy and reporting details for the specific fund.

Why an oil ETF can fall while oil rises
A mismatch is not necessarily an error. Common explanations include:
- Different reference prices: the fund may track a futures contract while you are watching a spot quote, a different grade or a different delivery location.
- Roll losses: in contango, replacing an expiring contract can require buying a more expensive later contract.
- Expenses and collateral: fees, interest earned on collateral and trading results change NAV.
- Timing: a fund may roll on a set calendar, so its exposure reflects contracts that have not moved in lockstep with the quote you are comparing.
- Premium or discount: the exchange price can fall below NAV even when the underlying portfolio is rising.
- Leverage reset: a daily leveraged or inverse product compounds each day’s return rather than delivering a fixed long-period multiple.
- Corporate-equity effects: an energy-stock fund can be hurt by debt, dilution, hedging losses, operating problems or a broad stock-market decline while crude rises.
Tax reporting is product-specific
Do not assume that an exchange-listed fund uses the same tax form as an ordinary stock ETF. In the United States, some commodity funds are organized as partnerships and issue Schedule K-1 forms. ProShares’ official K-1 information identifies certain commodity products, including UCO, as K-1 issuers. It presents OILK as K-1 free and describes its reporting as streamlined.
A K-1-free label does not prove that one product has a lower total tax cost for every investor. Tax treatment depends on the fund structure, distributions, holding period, account type and individual circumstances. Check the current prospectus and tax documents, and consult a qualified tax professional for advice. The examples above concern U.S. reporting; treatment in another country may differ.
A practical checklist before placing an order
- Write down the exact ticker and legal fund name. Similar names can conceal different benchmarks and tax structures.
- Read the objective and principal risks. Identify the reference asset, leverage objective and whether the fund owns futures, equities or other instruments.
- Open the benchmark methodology. Record the contract grade, maturities, weights and roll dates.
- Inspect the latest holdings and shareholder report. Confirm that the portfolio is operating as described and note collateral, cash and derivatives exposure.
- Check the current expense ratio and trading conditions. Look at the spread, volume, NAV premium or discount and your brokerage charges at the time of the order.
- Determine the tax form. Find out whether the fund issues a K-1 or Form 1099 and when tax documents are normally delivered.
- Define the holding period. Ask whether your thesis concerns a short-term move in a particular contract or a longer-term allocation. Roll mechanics become increasingly important over longer periods.
- Set a loss limit and position size before trading. Oil can move sharply in response to supply disruptions, geopolitical events, economic data and changes in inventories.
- Use an order type suited to the market. In a wide or fast-moving spread, a market order can fill materially away from the last quoted price.
- Recheck the documents periodically. Fees, methodologies, holdings, tax reporting and liquidity can change.
Who should be cautious
A futures-based oil fund may be unsuitable for someone who expects a simple, long-term one-for-one investment in spot crude, cannot tolerate substantial losses, needs predictable income, or does not understand futures rolls and daily pricing. It can also be a poor fit when the position would dominate a diversified portfolio or when a short-term trading product is being used as an unmonitored buy-and-hold investment.
Even when an oil position is intended as diversification, it may fall at the same time as stocks, bonds or other assets. Correlation changes with the economic cycle and the type of shock affecting markets. Consider the position in the context of your time horizon, risk tolerance, emergency savings, debts and broader financial plan rather than treating an oil ETF as a standalone hedge.
Questions to answer in the fund’s documents
- What exact index or futures benchmark does the fund follow?
- Does the benchmark target spot exposure, a single maturity or a spread across several maturities?
- When does the fund roll, and how many contracts does it hold?
- What happens if a contract becomes illiquid, trading is halted or the benchmark changes?
- What are the ongoing expenses and the principal trading risks?
- Can shares trade at a premium or discount to NAV, and how large have those differences been?
- Does the fund reset a daily leveraged or inverse objective?
- Which tax form will the fund issue for your jurisdiction and account?
Bottom line
Buy an oil ETF only after you can explain, in your own words, what the fund owns, which benchmark it follows, how it rolls contracts, how its market price can differ from NAV, what it costs to trade and hold, and how it will be reported for tax purposes. Spot oil, futures, fund NAV and the traded share price are related but not identical. The latest prospectus and shareholder report for the exact fund—not its marketing label—should control your decision.
