If you deleted a saved password and can no longer remember it, first look for another copy. The credential may still be in your browser account, a different browser profile, a synced phone or computer, an export, or a separate password manager. If every copy is gone, the dependable solution is the website’s own Forgot password or account-recovery process. That creates a new password; it does not restore the deleted browser entry.
Do not assume “deleted from the browser” means deleted everywhere
Browsers can store credentials in more than one place. Chrome distinguishes passwords saved to a Google Account from passwords kept only on the device. Firefox has profiles, Firefox Sync and local exports. Apple devices use iCloud Keychain, which synchronizes separately from an iCloud device backup. A password can therefore disappear from one screen while remaining available somewhere else.

Before changing anything, write down the account’s website or app name, the email address or username you used, and every device and browser where you may have signed in. Do not sign out of a browser profile, clear browsing data, reset a keychain or overwrite a profile while you investigate. Those actions can remove the remaining copy you are trying to find.

- Identify the original store: determine the browser, device, account and profile that held the login.
- Check synced and alternate copies: inspect the account-based manager, other profiles, signed-in devices and any export.
- Search under alternate names: try the domain, app name, parent company name and familiar service name.
- Reset the account: if no copy exists, use only the website’s official recovery flow.
- Secure the new credential: save it in the intended manager and make a protected backup if appropriate.
Chrome and Google Password Manager
Check the Google Account store
Open Chrome and go to Settings → Password Manager. Confirm which Google Account is active, then search for the site or app. You can also open passwords.google.com and sign in with the Google Account that was active when the password was saved. Google’s help distinguishes account-saved passwords from credentials stored only on the device, so an empty list at passwords.google.com does not prove that a local Chrome profile is empty.

If you use several Google Accounts, check each one that may have been active. A work, school or personal account can each have a different Password Manager list. On a shared computer, also check the Chrome profile avatar in the top-right corner and inspect each profile you legitimately use.
Check local Chrome storage
Chrome can retain passwords on the device when you are signed out of Chrome or when a credential was saved locally rather than to the Google Account. In the relevant Chrome profile, return to Settings → Password Manager and search there. You may be asked for the computer’s login password, PIN or biometric verification before Chrome reveals a saved password.
Do not delete the profile or clear stored data while troubleshooting. If the local entry has already been removed and no synchronized copy exists, Chrome does not provide a general promise that it can reconstruct the old value.
Search imported entries by several names
Google says imported passwords can be difficult to locate when the app or site name did not migrate as expected. Search the service’s domain (for example, the sign-in domain rather than the marketing site), its app name, a familiar abbreviation and the company name. If you imported a CSV from another manager, look for entries filed under the imported label rather than the name you normally type.

Firefox: check the profile, Sync and exports
Open the active Firefox Password Manager
In Firefox, open the menu and choose Passwords (the page may be labeled Logins and Passwords in some versions). Search by website address, username and service name. If Firefox asks for an operating-system password or primary-password confirmation, complete that verification; it is protecting the stored value rather than changing it.
Confirm that you are in the right profile
Firefox profiles have separate login databases. A missing entry may belong to another profile on the same computer. Open Firefox’s profile manager or the profile information available from the Help menu, identify the profile you used when the login was saved, and inspect its Password Manager. Do not remove an unfamiliar profile until you have determined whether it contains the missing login.
Check Firefox Sync settings
Open Settings → Sync and verify that Logins and Passwords is included in the synchronized data. Sign in with the same Mozilla account used on the device where the password may still exist, then check another synchronized device. Sync is separate from Google Password Manager; moving from Chrome to Firefox does not automatically copy credentials between the two systems.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsImport an existing CSV backup
If you previously exported Firefox logins to a CSV file, use Firefox Password Manager’s menu to choose Import from a file and select that export. Treat the CSV as sensitive: anyone who can open the file can generally read the usernames and passwords. After a successful import, remove the unencrypted file from downloads, cloud shares and recycle bins, and retain only a protected backup if you genuinely need one.

Safari, iPhone, iPad and Mac: inspect iCloud Keychain
Check whether iCloud Keychain is enabled
Apple’s iCloud Keychain is a separate synchronized store. On current Apple systems, check the device’s Apple Account settings for iCloud → Passwords and Keychain (older versions may show iCloud Keychain). On a Mac, open System Settings → Apple Account → iCloud → Passwords and Keychain. Verify that the same Apple Account is signed in and that synchronization is enabled.
Then inspect the Passwords app on iPhone or iPad, or System Settings → Passwords on a Mac, and search by website, app or username. Check another Apple device that was already signed in; it may still display the credential even if one device no longer does.
Do not rely on an iCloud Backup restore for Keychain passwords
Apple states that Keychain items are not part of iCloud Backup because they regularly synchronize to iCloud. Restoring an iPhone or iPad backup therefore does not necessarily restore a deleted Keychain password. Apple also documents that disabling iCloud Keychain on all devices removes the Keychain from iCloud, and that resetting the Mac keychain deletes its items. Avoid those actions until you have checked every device and confirmed that no copy is needed.

Edge has its own password manager and can synchronize credentials through a Microsoft account, but recovery behavior and menu labels vary by release. Open the current Edge Settings → Profiles → Passwords area, verify the signed-in account and inspect other Edge profiles and devices. If the entry is absent, consult Microsoft’s current support instructions for that release rather than assuming that Chrome or Firefox procedures apply.

The same principle applies to any less-common browser: identify its account-based store, local profile, sync setting and export location. A browser switch does not merge password databases automatically. If you still have access to the old browser, export or transfer the credential only through its built-in, documented tools.
Search methodically before starting a reset
Use several search terms
- The full sign-in domain, including a regional or subdomain address.
- The app’s exact name and a shortened name you may have used when importing.
- The service’s parent company or an older brand name.
- Your username or email address, when the manager supports username search.
Check every plausible location
- Each browser account and local profile on the original computer.
- A phone, tablet or laptop that was already signed in and synchronized.
- An exported CSV or encrypted password-manager backup.
- A different browser used before you switched platforms.
Do not keep guessing passwords at the website. Repeated failed attempts can trigger rate limits or security challenges, and guessing does not recover a deleted browser record. If a manager asks for device authentication, use the device’s normal unlock method; never send that credential to another person.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When no saved copy remains: reset the account
Use the service’s official sign-in page
Choose Forgot password, Can’t sign in or the equivalent account-recovery option on the service’s genuine website or app. Follow the identity checks offered by that provider, such as a recovery email, phone confirmation, authenticator approval or previously established recovery codes. Policies differ by service, so an account may be recoverable even when the old password is not.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a forgotten Google Account or Gmail password, use Google’s account-recovery process and answer the identity questions as accurately as possible. Use a device, browser and location you commonly use for that account when the provider recommends it. A successful reset establishes a new password; it does not reveal the deleted password from Chrome.
Best Value
Protect yourself from “recovery” scams
Do not pay an unofficial service that promises to reveal a browser password, and do not share a password, one-time code, recovery code or screen-sharing session with someone who contacts you unexpectedly. Google Account Help states: “We don’t work with any service that claims to provide account or password support.” Treat a request for verification codes as a warning sign, even if the requester uses a familiar logo or claims to be technical support.
After you regain access
Save the replacement password deliberately
- Sign in with the newly created password and confirm that the account works on the service’s official site or app.
- Save it in the password manager you intend to use, not merely in a browser you may abandon.
- Open the manager on a second signed-in device, if cross-device access matters, and verify that the new entry appears.
- Update the saved username or domain if the service has separate login and main-site addresses.
Create a safe backup only if you can protect it
An export can help with a future device failure, but it is not a way to restore an entry that was already erased. Google warns that an exported CSV can be opened by anyone with access to the device and recommends deleting the CSV after importing it. If you create one, store it temporarily in a protected location, avoid sending it by ordinary email or leaving it in a downloads folder, and delete it when the transfer is complete.
Improve account recovery while you are signed in
- Add and verify a recovery email address or phone number.
- Generate and store recovery codes where others cannot access them.
- Enable multifactor authentication using a method you can actually reach when traveling or replacing a phone.
- Review active sessions and revoke devices you no longer own.
- Check that your password manager’s sync account is the one you expect.
Quick decision table
| Where the password may be | What to check | What the result means |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome account store | Chrome Password Manager and passwords.google.com under each relevant Google Account | An account-saved copy may still be viewable even if one local profile is empty. |
| Chrome local profile | Settings → Password Manager in the original profile while signed out or locally stored | The credential may exist only on that device; deleting the profile can remove the remaining copy. |
| Firefox | Correct profile, Logins and Passwords, Sync inclusion and any CSV export | Firefox’s store is separate from Google’s and may require a profile or import check. |
| Apple devices | Passwords app or Mac Passwords settings, iCloud Passwords and Keychain sync, and another signed-in Apple device | Keychain synchronization is separate from iCloud Backup. |
| Any website | Official Forgot password or account-recovery flow | You receive a new credential if the provider can verify your identity; the old value is not recovered. |
Common mistakes that make recovery harder
- Checking only one account: an empty manager list may belong to the wrong Google, Mozilla or Apple Account.
- Searching only the familiar brand name: imported entries can use a domain, app label or parent-company name instead.
- Assuming a backup contains every secret: Apple says iCloud Backup does not contain iCloud Keychain items.
- Resetting or disabling sync too soon: removing a profile, turning off Keychain everywhere or resetting a Mac keychain can destroy remaining copies.
- Using an unofficial helper: legitimate providers do not need your existing password or one-time verification code to guide you through their own recovery page.
- Keeping an exposed export: an unencrypted CSV is readable by anyone who obtains it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a deleted browser password be recovered?
Only if another copy remains in an account-based manager, local profile, synced device, different browser profile or backup. If all copies are gone, reset the account through the service’s official recovery process.
Why is the password missing from passwords.google.com but still possibly in Chrome?
Chrome can store passwords locally on a device as well as in a Google Account. Check the original Chrome profile and device before concluding that the credential is gone.
Will restoring an iCloud backup bring back a deleted Safari password?
Not necessarily. Apple says iCloud Keychain items are not part of iCloud Backup; inspect iCloud Keychain and other signed-in Apple devices instead.
Is a password-recovery company safe to use?
Avoid services that request your password or verification codes. Google Account Help says it does not work with services claiming to provide account or password support.
