What to Know Before Buying an Apple Home Hub

A hub is needed for Apple Home remote access and automations, but some Matter accessories work locally from eligible iPhones. Compare compatible devices and setup requirements.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You may not need to buy a separate Apple Home hub just to add and control a Matter accessory locally: Apple says some iPhones running iOS 18 or later can do that. A hub is required for remote control while you’re away, and it enables home automations and other hub-dependent functions. For a new purchase, the main choices are HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K—but Thread support depends on the exact model and configuration.

Do you need an Apple Home hub?

It depends on what you want your smart home to do. Apple says a home hub enables remote control, sharing control of the home, and automations. To control your home remotely from an iPhone, you need a hub and the same Apple Account signed in on the hub and iPhone. Apple’s remote-control instructions explain the requirement.

There is a limited no-hub case: Apple says an iPhone running iOS 18 or later can add and control Matter accessories without a hub. Apple still recommends a hub for the best experience, and local control from that iPhone does not replace the hub requirement for remote access. Check the accessory’s requirements before deciding to wait. Apple’s Home accessory guide describes the Matter setup conditions.

Which Apple devices can act as a home hub?

Device How it becomes a hub Thread detail Best fit
HomePod mini Becomes a hub automatically when set up. Thread-capable. You want a compact speaker as well as a hub.
HomePod (2nd generation) Becomes a hub automatically when set up. Apple lists it as a Thread-capable option. You already want a HomePod speaker; it is not the compact choice in this comparison.
Apple TV 4K (2nd generation) Becomes a hub when added to a room in the Home app. Apple lists it as a Thread-capable option. You want an Apple TV streaming box and need a Thread-capable hub.
Apple TV 4K (3rd generation), Wi‑Fi + Ethernet Becomes a hub when added to a room in the Home app. Thread networking is included in this configuration. You want a streaming box with Thread support.
Apple TV 4K (3rd generation), Wi‑Fi Becomes a hub when added to a room in the Home app. Apple does not identify this configuration as Thread-capable. You want a streaming box, but do not need the Thread feature documented for the Wi‑Fi + Ethernet model.

Apple says only the Home owner can add a HomePod or Apple TV to a home as its hub. The setup instructions name HomePod and HomePod mini as automatic hubs, while Apple TV must be assigned to a room in the Home app. Apple’s HomePod mini specifications list Thread networking, a 20W adapter in the box, and temperature and humidity sensors. Those specifications describe the product; they do not establish room coverage or smart-home performance.

Be precise when buying an Apple TV for Thread. Apple specifically names Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi‑Fi + Ethernet as Thread-enabled; its technical specifications list Thread networking for that configuration, which has 128GB storage. The Wi‑Fi configuration has 64GB storage, and Apple’s specifications do not list Thread for it. Do not assume that every Apple TV 4K configuration has Thread. Apple TV 4K technical specifications provide the configuration details.

What do Matter and Thread change?

Matter is not a guarantee that every feature works without a hub

Matter is a smart-home standard, but the accessory’s supported features and Apple’s setup requirements still matter. Some Matter accessories can be added and controlled locally from an iPhone on iOS 18 or later without a hub; remote access and hub-dependent automation still call for a hub. Follow the accessory maker’s instructions as well as the Home app flow. If the device has already been paired elsewhere, you may need to generate a new pairing code in its manufacturer app. Apple’s accessory setup guide covers pairing codes and setup.

Thread accessories need a Thread border router for hub-dependent features

A Thread accessory may require a Thread border router or Thread-enabled device to work with automations, notifications, and remote control. Apple’s examples include HomePod mini, HomePod (2nd generation), Apple TV 4K (2nd generation), and Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi‑Fi + Ethernet. A compatible third-party border router may also work. A Matter label alone does not establish that an accessory supports every Apple Home feature, so confirm the exact model, protocol, firmware, and manufacturer requirements. See Apple’s Thread border router guidance.

What to check before you buy

  • Your intended use: If you need only local control of eligible Matter accessories from a qualifying iPhone, a hub may not be necessary immediately. For remote control, sharing, or automations, plan on one.
  • Whether you want a speaker or streaming box: HomePod mini combines the hub role with a compact speaker; Apple TV 4K combines it with streaming. Choose for the device you will use, not an unsupported assumption about smart-home performance.
  • The exact Thread configuration: Check the full Apple TV generation and network configuration, or choose a Thread-capable HomePod. If your accessory uses Thread, verify that its features need a border router.
  • Accessory setup needs: Check the manual for required hardware, firmware, software versions, manufacturer-app steps, and whether you need its Apple Home or Matter code.
  • Home ownership and accounts: The Home owner adds a HomePod or Apple TV as the hub. For remote control, the hub and iPhone must use the same Apple Account.
  • Price and availability: Apple’s cited specifications and support pages do not establish current prices, discounts, stock, or availability in every region. Check Apple or local retailers for current purchase details.

How to add an accessory and set up the hub

Add the accessory in the Home app

  1. Power on the accessory and make sure it has network access.
  2. On your iPhone, open the Home app and choose Add Accessory.
  3. Scan the accessory’s QR code or enter its Apple Home or Matter code when prompted.
  4. Follow the on-screen steps. If it was previously paired, get a fresh pairing code from the manufacturer’s app if required.

The exact screens and prerequisites vary by accessory; consult its current instructions alongside Apple’s setup guide.

Make the Apple device the home hub

  1. For HomePod or HomePod mini, complete setup while signed in to the Apple Account associated with the home; it becomes a hub automatically.
  2. For Apple TV, sign in with the Apple Account associated with the home, then add the Apple TV to a room in the Home app.
  3. Keep the hub connected to your home network and its software up to date.

Apple’s hub setup instructions provide the current setup flow. Its troubleshooting guidance says the latest Home version does not support iPad as a home hub; do not buy or repurpose an iPad expecting it to fill that role. Apple’s troubleshooting article also calls out current hub software, home Wi‑Fi, iCloud Keychain, and two-factor authentication as checks.

Fixing “Home Hub Required” and setup problems

  • “Home Hub Required” appears: Confirm a supported HomePod or Apple TV is configured as a hub, is connected to the home Wi‑Fi, and is signed in with the Apple Account associated with the Home. Apple also recommends current software and enabled iCloud Keychain and two-factor authentication.
  • Accessory will not pair: Confirm it is powered on and has network access, then check its manual for firmware, software, hardware, or manufacturer-app requirements. Retry with the correct QR code or pairing code; previously paired Matter devices may need a newly generated code.
  • “Thread Border Router Required” or “Needs Thread Network” appears: Check that the home has a Thread-capable hub or a compatible third-party border router, and that the chosen Apple TV configuration is explicitly Thread-enabled.
  • Remote control does not work: Verify that the hub is online and that the iPhone and hub use the same Apple Account. Follow Apple’s remote-control troubleshooting steps.
