What to Know Before Buying a Used PS5 or Xbox Series X

A practical checklist for inspecting a used PS5 or Xbox Series X, verifying online access, and comparing a private sale with certified refurbishment.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before paying for a used PS5 or Xbox Series X, test the exact console if you can, confirm what is included, and get the seller’s return and warranty terms in writing. A video can show that a unit powers on, but an in-person check is more useful for spotting display problems, worn ports, overheating, or other faults. If you cannot test it, weigh the lower asking price against the protection offered by a seller with a clear return policy or a certified-refurbished purchase.

Decide what kind of purchase you are comparing

“Used,” “renewed,” and “certified refurbished” do not, by themselves, tell you how thoroughly a console was checked or what happens if it fails. Compare the specific offer: who inspected it, whether you can return it, what the warranty covers, and which accessories are included. A low price is not necessarily a better deal if the console cannot be tested and the seller offers no practical recourse.

Factor Private-party or other third-party used console Certified-refurbished console
Inspection confidence Depends on the seller and the checks you can perform. Request a demonstration and test the actual unit when possible. Microsoft says Xbox Certified Refurbished products are screened, repaired, tested, cleaned, and repackaged. Sony says certified-refurbished PlayStation products include a warranty, but the cited US guidance does not describe a specific refurbishment process.
Warranty Sony’s US guide says third-party used PlayStation products are not covered by warranty under the policy described there. For Xbox, check the exact seller’s written terms. Microsoft says certified-refurbished Xbox consoles include a 90-day warranty. Sony’s US guide says certified-refurbished PlayStation products include a warranty, but does not establish its duration.
Returns Ask the seller what return period, if any, applies and what condition the console must be in. Do not assume a private sale can be reversed. Confirm the listing’s current return terms separately from its warranty; the cited Microsoft pages do not establish a universal return period.
Included items Verify the controller, HDMI cable, power cable, stand or base, and any advertised extras are present and working. The Microsoft Store listing cited for a refurbished Xbox includes an Xbox Wireless Controller and Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Confirm the contents of the specific listing.

Microsoft’s refurbished Xbox listing showed the console out of stock when accessed in 2026, so availability can change. Sony’s cited warranty guidance is for the United States; it does not establish current PS5 refurbished stock, a particular warranty duration, or terms outside that region. Check the current listing and regional terms before relying on either company’s policy.

For either console, distinguish the condition of the outer shell from the condition of the hardware. A clean-looking unit has not necessarily been tested, and a scuffed shell does not by itself establish that a console is faulty. Focus on evidence: whether the unit starts, displays a stable picture, reads a suitable game disc if it has a drive, connects online, and works with its controller. Then compare that evidence with the specific written promises and protections attached to the sale.

Before meeting the seller or placing an order

Ask for evidence about the exact unit

Request a recent video of the console being powered on and displaying an image, connecting to the internet, and running a game. Ask the seller to show the controller responding, the ports you expect to use, and the disc drive if the model has one. Sony recommends requesting video evidence and checking the console in person where possible; Microsoft’s Series X testing procedure covers comparable operating checks. A demonstration is evidence of function at that moment, not a guarantee against a later fault.

Ask for a continuous or clearly connected demonstration of the actual console being offered, rather than relying only on generic product photos. It should let you see the console start and reach its normal interface, show an image on a display, and demonstrate a game loading or running. If a disc drive is part of the offer, ask to see a suitable game disc inserted and read. If the seller demonstrates online access, ask to see the connection rather than accepting an unsupported statement that it works.

A remote video is a useful first filter, not a replacement for inspection. It may not reveal a loose port, intermittent display issue, abnormal noise under use, or a problem that occurs only when a controller is paired. Sony specifically notes that in-person checking can uncover image-quality problems, overheating, and damage not apparent in video. Arrange a safe, practical way to inspect the unit before payment, or treat the lack of an in-person check as a risk when comparing offers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clarify the model, history, and sale terms

  • Ask which exact PS5 or Series X version is for sale, whether it has a disc drive, and what accessories are included. The console’s configuration affects what you can use it for; do not assume that every PS5 listing has the same disc capability.
  • Ask whether the console has been repaired, whether a receipt or warranty documentation is available, and whether the seller will put any promised return period in writing.
  • Check the seller’s ratings and feedback on the platform where the offer appears. Sony cautions buyers to review seller reputation and warns about scams.
  • If you cannot inspect before purchase, favor a listing with clearly stated condition, a documented return route, and a seller you can identify. A label such as “renewed” is not a substitute for reading those terms.

Before agreeing to buy, make a simple inventory of the offer. Note the console version, whether it includes a disc drive, the controller, HDMI cable, power cable, stand or base, and any other promised item. Ask whether each included accessory is original or a replacement and whether it has been tested. The point is not to require a particular brand of cable or accessory; it is to avoid discovering after delivery that an essential item shown in the listing was not actually included.

Also get specifics on the remedy if the console arrives or proves faulty. Ask who handles a claim, how long you have to report a problem, whether you must return the complete bundle, and whether the seller’s written terms cover the console, controller, or both. The exact answer varies by seller and offer, so do not treat a warranty mention as a complete explanation of the return process.

A serial number can help identify the console, but it is not proof of ownership or a guarantee of warranty coverage. Sony advises checking that serial information has not been removed; Microsoft identifies the Series X model and serial label at the back right of the console. Treat a missing or altered label as a reason to pause and ask for an explanation rather than as something a seller can resolve with an unsupported assurance.

Inspect and test the console in person

Bring a display, power source, internet connection if available, and a known-good game or disc suited to the console. Allow enough time to move through the checks instead of relying on a quick power-on demonstration. If the seller will not permit reasonable testing, decide whether the remaining risk is acceptable before handing over money.

Prepare the test in advance so you can spend the meeting checking the console rather than improvising. Use a display and HDMI connection you know work, a game you know loads, and a suitable network connection if available. For a disc model, bring media that the console is expected to read. Testing with known-good equipment matters: if an image fails, a cable or display setup may be at fault, while an unreadable disc may itself be damaged. Repeat a failed check with a known-good alternative where practical before deciding what it means.

  1. Inspect the exterior and identifying label. Look over the shell, visible connectors, vents, and ports for cracks, heavy wear, bent or loose connections, or signs of tampering. Check that the serial information is present and legible. Sony cautions buyers to look for broken warranty seals or removed serial numbers; Microsoft’s Series X procedure calls for inspecting the console and ports for visible damage or wear.
  2. Start the console and check the picture. Connect it to a display over HDMI and confirm that it starts reliably and produces a clear, stable image. Watch for visual artifacts, repeated shutdowns, or an image that cuts out when the cable is gently repositioned. Microsoft’s test looks for the Xbox logo and a clear image. Sony notes that an in-person check may expose image-quality problems, overheating, or damage a video does not reveal.
  3. Listen and watch during use. Let the console run long enough to navigate the system and start a game. Pay attention to unusual fan or component noises, unexpected shutdowns, and signs of overheating. Microsoft’s testing guidance tells technicians to note unusual sounds; the seller’s short video cannot establish how the console behaves during sustained use.
  4. Try the controller and controls. Pair the included controller and test its inputs during gameplay. Check the console’s buttons, including power and eject where applicable, rather than assuming a controller demonstration verifies them. Microsoft’s Series X procedure includes controller synchronization and power/eject-button checks.
  5. Check the network and system operation. Connect to Wi-Fi or Ethernet and verify that the console can reach online services. Navigate the system, check audio, and test USB ports with a suitable device. Microsoft’s checks include network connectivity, a system update, gameplay, audio, and USB. If an update is available, do not mistake a normal update process for evidence that the hardware is faulty.
  6. Test the disc drive when the model has one. Use a known-good game disc and confirm that the console reads it and starts the game. For a PS5, Sony identifies a game disc, Blu-ray, or DVD as suitable test media; PS5 consoles cannot play burned discs or audio CDs. For Series X, Microsoft’s procedure calls for inserting a game disc or launching a digital game, then confirming that it loads and runs.

For the picture check, look for a clear image that remains on screen as you use the console, rather than only seeing a startup logo. Try navigating menus and opening a game. This gives you a chance to notice an image that drops out, repeated restarts, or a system that cannot progress beyond startup. If the seller has time, keep the console running during the other checks so you can notice whether it behaves differently once in use.

During the controller test, use the included controller rather than assuming that a controller shown in a listing is part of the deal. Pair it with the console and try its inputs while navigating or playing. If the controller will not pair, ask whether it is the console or controller being tested and whether another known-good controller is available. Do not count an untested controller as a working accessory in your price comparison.

For ports, test the connections you expect to use, including HDMI and USB, without forcing plugs or moving cables roughly. Check that the console’s physical buttons respond. Microsoft’s Series X checks include USB, power, and eject, while its wider procedure also checks system update, gameplay, audio, network connectivity, and controller synchronization. These checks help establish whether the console can perform its basic functions; they do not predict how long it will continue to work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When testing network access, use a connection you know is available and allow enough time for the console to connect and reach online services. If it cannot connect, check whether the network itself is working before attributing the issue to the console. A successful connection is useful evidence, but it does not guarantee that a console will never face a later restriction or account-related problem.

If a check fails, ask the seller to repeat it with a known-good cable, disc, or network where practical. That can help distinguish a faulty accessory or setup problem from a console problem, but do not accept a verbal promise that the fault will be fixed later unless the remedy is part of the written sale terms.

Confirm account handoff and online-service access

For a PlayStation, ask the seller to deactivate the console and ensure they no longer have access to it. Sony warns that a PlayStation product reported lost or stolen may be permanently suspended from PlayStation services. Test online access before purchase if possible, but a successful connection at the time of the test does not prove that no restriction can ever be applied later.

Do not treat a seller’s account being visible on the console as a substitute for a clean handoff. Confirm that you can use the console with your own account and that the seller has followed the platform’s deactivation or sign-out process. If the seller cannot explain how the handoff will work, or refuses to let you verify access, factor that uncertainty into your decision rather than assuming it will be easy to resolve after the sale.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make account handoff part of the sale, not an afterthought. Ask the seller to complete the deactivation step and confirm they no longer have access to the PlayStation console. Do not rely on being able to use a console through someone else’s account or on the seller’s promise that they will sort it out later. For any console, test online-service access with your own account where possible, and understand that a test at the time of purchase cannot guarantee future access if a restriction is later applied.

Sony’s warning about lost or stolen products makes this check especially important: a PlayStation reported lost or stolen may be permanently suspended from PlayStation services. A seller’s ability to power on the console or show a game is therefore not the same as confirming a complete, dependable handoff. If the seller will not cooperate with deactivation or account checks, consider that an unresolved issue, not a minor paperwork gap.

Compare the real cost, not just the asking price

There is no universal fair price, used-console failure rate, or expected savings percentage established by official guidance. Compare actual offers and account for what you receive and what recourse you have. A console missing a working controller or required cable may cost more to put into service than its headline price suggests.

  • Condition: Include what you learned from testing the display, ports, controller, network, noise, and disc drive, not only the seller’s cosmetic grade.
  • Accessories: List each included item and check it works. Confirm the controller, HDMI and power cables, stand or base, and any extras the seller promised.
  • Warranty and returns: Record the duration, covered faults, responsible seller, and deadline for reporting a problem. A warranty and a return window are separate forms of protection.
  • Confidence in the test: A video can screen out obvious faults; an in-person test lets you check the actual connections, controller, network, and operation yourself.
  • Total outlay: Compare the asking price plus any missing essentials against the price of an offer that includes those items and provides clearer protection.

Use this comparison to decide whether the difference in price compensates for the specific gaps in testing or protection. Do not assign a dollar value to a warranty, accessory, or defect without checking what the actual seller offers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When weighing two listings, write down the same facts for each rather than comparing a detailed certified-refurbished listing with only the headline price of a private sale. Record the seller, condition description, what testing is documented, included accessories, return deadline, warranty duration and covered faults, and whether you can test before paying. If a term is absent, mark it as unknown instead of assuming it is favorable.

For example, one offer may cost less but include no working controller or written return option, while another may include the controller and cable and state a defined warranty. The first offer is not automatically a bargain; compare the total cost of getting a usable setup and the amount of recourse each seller provides. The Microsoft Certified Refurbished warranty is 90 days, but the official pages do not establish a universal return window. Verify both separately for the exact listing.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

There is no sourced failure-rate figure or standard discount that makes one purchase route a guaranteed better value. The useful comparison is specific: can you test the exact console, what faults or uncertainties remain, what does the sale include, and who is responsible if something is wrong? A lower asking price may be appropriate when you knowingly accept less protection, but do not treat the discount itself as evidence that the console is sound.

When a certified-refurbished option makes more sense

A certified-refurbished listing may be preferable when you cannot test a used console beforehand and want a stated inspection process and warranty. Microsoft describes its Xbox Certified Refurbished products as screened, repaired, tested, cleaned, and repackaged, and states that refurbished Xbox consoles include a 90-day warranty. The cited Microsoft Store listing specifies an Xbox Wireless Controller and Ultra High Speed HDMI cable in the box, but its stock status can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a PlayStation, Sony’s US buying guidance says certified-refurbished products include a warranty, while third-party used PlayStation products are not covered by warranty under the policy described there. It does not establish a warranty duration or current PS5 stock. Check the terms for the exact product and your region; do not assume that a seller using the word “refurbished” is part of Sony’s certified program.

Certified refurbishment does not remove the need to read the listing. Verify that the product is actually being sold under the named program, review the warranty’s duration and scope, and check the return terms, included items, and availability at the time you order. Microsoft’s description of its screening, repair, testing, cleaning, and repackaging process and its 90-day warranty are specific to its Certified Refurbished Xbox offer. They do not define what an unrelated seller means by “renewed” or “refurbished.”

Likewise, Sony’s cited guidance is US-specific and says that certified-refurbished PlayStation products include a warranty without stating its duration. It does not confirm that a particular PS5 model is currently available refurbished. If you are outside the United States, or considering a listing from a different seller, check the applicable regional terms directly rather than assuming the US policy or another seller’s label applies.

Make the purchase only when the remaining risk is clear

Proceed with a used console when the unit’s identity and included items are clear, the seller permits useful testing or offers credible return protection, and the price makes sense after accounting for missing accessories and warranty coverage. If the seller blocks basic checks, the account handoff is unresolved, or key terms are vague, walk away or choose an offer with a clearer remedy. The key comparison is not simply private sale versus refurbished: it is how much confidence and recourse each exact listing gives you for the price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before paying, make sure you can answer four practical questions: What exact console and configuration am I getting? What did I actually see tested? What accessories and written protections are included? What is my next step if it fails or cannot access online services? If any answer depends on an informal promise, decide whether you are comfortable taking that risk. When you are not, keep looking for a seller or listing with clearer evidence and terms.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I check before buying a used PS5?

Ask for a recent video, then inspect the exact console in person if possible. Check the shell, ports and serial label; power it on and test a clear, stable HDMI picture, controller, buttons, network access, audio and USB ports. If it has a disc drive, test it with a known-good game disc, Blu-ray or DVD. Sony says PS5 consoles cannot play burned discs or audio CDs. Also confirm the seller has deactivated the console and no longer has access to it.

What should I look for when buying a used Xbox Series X?

Inspect the console and ports for visible damage or wear, then test startup and a clear display image, controller synchronization, network connectivity, a system update, gameplay, audio, USB, and the power and eject buttons. Listen for unusual fan or component noises. Microsoft’s Series X procedure calls for inserting a game disc or launching a digital game and confirming that it loads and runs.

How can I tell whether a used PS5 or Xbox Series X is online-ready?

Connect it to Wi-Fi or Ethernet and check access to online services where possible. For a PlayStation, also ask the seller to deactivate the console and ensure they no longer have access. Sony warns that a PlayStation product reported lost or stolen may be permanently suspended from PlayStation services. A successful connection during your test does not guarantee that a later restriction will never occur.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is certified refurbished safer than buying a used console from a person?

It can offer a clearer inspection and warranty path, but compare the exact terms. Microsoft says Xbox Certified Refurbished products are screened, repaired, tested, cleaned and repackaged, and refurbished Xbox consoles include a 90-day warranty. Sony’s US guidance says certified-refurbished PlayStation products include a warranty but does not state its duration. A seller’s use of “renewed” or “refurbished” alone does not establish that it is part of either program.

Does a used PS5 come with a Sony warranty?

Sony’s US buying guide says third-party used PlayStation products are not covered by warranty under the policy described there, while certified-refurbished PlayStation products include a warranty. The cited guidance does not specify a warranty duration or establish terms outside the United States. Confirm the exact seller, product, region, and written terms.

What is included with a certified-refurbished Xbox Series X?

The Microsoft Store listing cited for a refurbished Xbox includes an Xbox Wireless Controller and an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Check the current listing to confirm box contents and stock, since availability and listing details can change. The Microsoft refurbished console warranty stated in its product guidance is 90 days.

Should I buy a used console if the seller will not let me test it?

Only if the remaining uncertainty and the seller’s return protection are acceptable to you. Ask for video evidence of startup, display, internet connection, controller response, relevant ports and disc-drive operation. If you cannot test before paying, favor a clearly identified seller and a written return route, and weigh the missing inspection confidence against the price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Test the exact PS5 or Xbox Series X, verify the account handoff and included accessories, and compare written warranty and return terms before paying. If an in-person test is not possible, a clearly documented certified-refurbished offer may provide more confidence—but confirm the specific listing, regional terms, and current availability.
