Authorized participants (APs) submit large, fund-defined baskets directly to a fund. Depending on that fund’s current documents, a basket may be settled in cash, bitcoin, or an available combination. Individual investors generally buy and sell shares through brokers; they do not redeem shares directly with the trust.

To understand a reported inflow or outflow, separate the primary market from the secondary market. They involve different participants and different transactions.

The primary market: baskets created or redeemed with the fund
In the primary market, an AP submits an order to create or redeem a block of shares under its agreement with the fund. A creation adds shares to the fund’s outstanding supply; a redemption removes shares from it. The fund’s prospectus and related documents govern who may place these orders, the size of a basket, the cutoff and settlement procedures, and whether the transaction is in cash, bitcoin, or both. SEC filings for Bitwise and BlackRock describe APs as the parties that place direct basket orders with the funds.

A basket is not a universal Bitcoin ETF unit. It is a block defined by a particular fund. For example, Bitwise’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, gives a 10,000-share basket, while Invesco Galaxy’s 2025 prospectus supplement gives a 5,000-share basket. Those are examples from specific filings, not an industry-wide standard. Bitwise Form 10-Q, June 30, 2026; Invesco Galaxy prospectus supplement, 2025.

The secondary market: investors trade listed shares
Most investors encounter a Bitcoin ETF in the secondary market: they place buy or sell orders through a brokerage account, and shares trade on an exchange. A retail investor’s sale is a sale of shares to another market participant; it is not, by itself, a redemption request to the fund. The reviewed Bitwise and BlackRock filings distinguish exchange trading from AP basket transactions. Bitwise Form 10-Q; BlackRock Bitcoin Trust Form 10-Q, June 30, 2026.
This distinction matters because a busy trading day in ETF shares does not automatically mean the fund created or redeemed an equal number of shares. Secondary-market trades can occur between investors without a primary-market basket order. Fund flows are associated with creations and redemptions, which change the fund’s share count.
How a creation works
When demand for new shares leads an AP to create a basket, the AP delivers the consideration required by that fund’s procedures. The fund issues the basket’s shares after the creation process is completed. The route differs according to whether the transaction is cash-based or in-kind.
Cash creation
In a cash creation, the AP provides cash. The fund or its agent then arranges a bitcoin purchase as part of the creation process, and the AP receives the basket shares. The investor-facing implication is that cash has to be converted into bitcoin within the fund’s specified operating process; an AP does not necessarily deliver bitcoin directly to the fund in this route.

In-kind creation
In an in-kind creation, bitcoin is delivered into the fund’s custody arrangement in exchange for basket shares. The bitcoin transfer and custody steps are governed by the fund’s documents. In-kind procedures are not interchangeable with cash procedures: they change what the AP delivers and how the bitcoin enters the fund’s custody arrangement. A VanEck 2025 prospectus supplement specifically addresses in-kind procedures. VanEck Bitcoin ETF in-kind prospectus supplement, 2025.
How Bitcoin ETF redemptions work
A redemption reverses the primary-market share process: an AP submits a basket for redemption under the fund’s terms, and the fund delivers the specified consideration. What the AP receives depends on the settlement method allowed by that fund.
Cash redemption
For a cash redemption, the fund or its agent sells bitcoin to raise cash for the AP. That describes the procedure in the relevant fund documents; it does not establish that every redemption causes an immediate open-market sale at a particular time or price. The specific steps and timing depend on the fund’s current prospectus and operating arrangements.

For an in-kind redemption, bitcoin is transferred through the fund’s custody arrangement to the AP or its designee. What an ordinary shareholder can and cannot request
The reviewed filings describe direct basket orders as an AP function, not a retail account feature. An individual shareholder generally cannot ask the trust to exchange their few shares for bitcoin or cash through the fund’s basket-redemption process. To exit, the shareholder typically places a sell order for ETF shares through a broker. The share trade and a later AP redemption are separate events, and the retail sale does not guarantee that a redemption will occur.
What Bitcoin ETF inflows and outflows mean
In common market reporting, an inflow refers to net creations over a stated period, while an outflow refers to net redemptions. This is a practical interpretation of the creation-and-redemption mechanics, not a single standardized calculation established by the fund filings reviewed here. A number labeled “flow” should therefore be read with its publisher, time period and methodology in view.
For example, a provider might calculate a daily net flow by estimating the change in fund assets or shares and relating it to bitcoin prices or holdings. Different providers may use different data, timing conventions or methods. The filings explain how particular funds process baskets; they do not set one cross-provider formula for aggregating every Bitcoin ETF’s flows. A figure without its period and methodology can be easy to misread.

- Creation: an AP submits a basket order and the fund issues shares under its procedures.
- Redemption: an AP submits a basket for cancellation and receives cash, bitcoin, or the consideration specified by the fund.
- Net flow: a reported measure that commonly expresses creations minus redemptions for a defined period, as calculated by a particular data publisher.
- Exchange turnover: investor-to-investor trading in listed shares; high turnover alone does not establish a net creation or redemption.
These labels describe different layers of activity. A positive reported flow does not mean every investor bought shares during that period, and a negative flow does not mean every investor sold. It indicates the reporting provider’s measure of primary-market net activity for the specified funds and interval.

Why flows do not equal an immediate bitcoin purchase or sale
A cash creation can involve the fund or an agent arranging a bitcoin purchase, and a cash redemption can involve selling bitcoin to raise cash. In-kind transactions instead use bitcoin transfers through custody. Consequently, it is too broad to translate every reported net inflow into an immediate market buy, or every outflow into an immediate market sell. The settlement method and operating sequence matter.
Nor do the mechanics alone establish the size or timing of a market impact. The reviewed filings do not quantify how quickly an AP, fund or agent completes a particular transaction, whether bitcoin is sourced or sold on a public exchange in every case, or the price effect of the activity. A flow number can be useful as a measure of fund demand, but it should not be treated as a direct, precisely timed measure of bitcoin-market buying and selling.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How creations and redemptions relate to NAV
NAV, or net asset value, is the value attributed to a fund’s assets minus liabilities on a per-share basis under its valuation procedures. Bitcoin ETF shares, however, trade in the secondary market at prices that can be above NAV (a premium) or below NAV (a discount). Fund disclosures identify that possibility.
The primary-market link between basket transactions and fund assets can provide a route connecting share supply with the underlying bitcoin exposure. But the existence of that route does not prove that premiums or discounts disappear immediately, or that share prices always equal NAV. The reviewed materials do not quantify the timing or effectiveness of arbitrage in response to a price difference. NAV and exchange price are related measures, not a promise of identical prices at every moment.

What varies from one fund to another
Do not assume that every Bitcoin ETF follows the same basket size, settlement route or order timetable. Issuer filings provide the operative terms for each product, and those terms can change through amended filings. The examples below show why checking the relevant document matters; they are not a complete description of each fund’s current procedures.
| Fund filing | Specific detail established here | How to use the example |
|---|---|---|
| Bitwise, Form 10-Q for quarter ended June 30, 2026 | 10,000 shares per basket; filing describes AP basket orders and secondary-market trading. | Use this as a fund-specific basket example, not a universal basket size. SEC filing. |
| Invesco Galaxy, prospectus supplement, 2025 | 5,000 shares per basket. | Its different figure illustrates that basket sizes vary by fund. SEC filing. |
| BlackRock Bitcoin Trust, Form 10-Q for quarter ended June 30, 2026 | Describes AP direct basket orders and exchange trading; the reviewed material does not establish a basket-size comparison for this table. | Consult the filing for the fund’s procedures rather than importing another issuer’s basket terms. SEC filing. |
| VanEck Bitcoin ETF, in-kind prospectus supplement, 2025 | Addresses in-kind procedures; the reviewed material does not establish a basket-size comparison for this table. | Use the supplement for its described in-kind terms; do not assume they apply to other funds. SEC filing. |
Operational details worth checking in the latest prospectus or supplement include the basket size, whether cash or in-kind settlement is available, which party sources or sells bitcoin in a cash transaction, where custody and transfers occur, eligible order channels, deadlines and transaction procedures. The documents matter more than a generic description of “Bitcoin ETF flows,” because an accurate explanation for one fund may not describe another.
How to interpret a flow report without overreading it
- Identify the publisher and period. Check whether the figure is daily, weekly or for another interval, and note which funds it covers.
- Find the stated method. Determine whether the number measures reported basket activity, estimated share changes, asset changes, or another calculation. If the provider does not make its method clear, treat the figure as an estimate rather than a universal official total.
- Separate primary and secondary activity. Trading volume in shares is not the same as net basket creation or redemption. Look for a flow measure rather than inferring one from turnover.
- Check settlement terms before inferring bitcoin-market action. A cash transaction and an in-kind transfer involve different steps, so a flow total alone does not show the exact timing or venue of a bitcoin trade.
- Use the fund’s current filing for operational claims. Confirm basket size, eligible settlement method and order process in the issuer’s latest prospectus or report. Older supplements may be amended.
As of October 10, 2026, the filings cited here do not establish a current aggregate spot Bitcoin ETF flow total. They are useful for explaining mechanics, not for supplying a market-wide flow reading on that date. For a current figure, a reader needs a dated provider report and its methodology; no total should be inferred from the operating examples above.
Quick Recap
Common misreadings
- “My sale is an ETF redemption.” A retail sale is normally a secondary-market share trade. Direct basket redemptions in the reviewed filings are submitted by APs.
- “Every outflow means bitcoin was sold right away.” A cash redemption may involve a bitcoin sale under the fund’s procedure; an in-kind redemption transfers bitcoin through custody. The filings do not establish an identical immediate sale for every redemption.
- “All funds use the same basket.” The cited Bitwise and Invesco Galaxy filings show 10,000-share and 5,000-share examples respectively.
- “Flows are a standardized official number.” Provider-reported figures depend on a publisher, defined period and methodology; the reviewed filings do not set one cross-provider calculation.
- “The creation/redemption mechanism guarantees NAV parity.” Disclosures allow for premiums and discounts, and the reviewed material does not quantify how quickly or fully arbitrage closes them.
