It does not eliminate maintenance, and “self-emptying” is not a standardized feature: dock design, upkeep, and fit vary by model. Choose for your floors, hair, clutter, rugs, clearances, and tolerance for dock maintenance—not just the feature list.
Start with the home you need it to clean
Before comparing models, note the conditions that will shape how well a robot can work in your rooms. The independent Vacuum Wars Robot Vacuum Buying Guide, updated September 30, 2026, puts it plainly: “The most important rule: Choose for the conditions in your home.” A higher price does not automatically make a robot the right match.

- Flooring: Record the balance of carpet and hard floors. Carpet homes may place more weight on brush design and carpet-cleaning results; hard-floor homes may care more about mopping and edge coverage.
- Hair and debris: If people or pets shed, look for brush and anti-tangle design suited to that load. More hair and debris can also affect how often you need to service the robot and dock.
- Clutter: Cables, toys, and other objects on the floor can make dedicated obstacle avoidance more useful than mapping alone.
- Rugs and mixed floors: If a robot also mops, check whether it can lift or remove its mop and how it handles carpet. Otherwise, a wet pad may be dragged onto a rug.
- Clearance and thresholds: Measure the gaps beneath furniture and the height of transitions between rooms, then compare them with the exact model’s published dimensions and manual.
- Dock location: Consider where the station can sit, how much floor space it occupies, and whether you can reach its bag, container, tanks, or trays for upkeep.
What self-emptying does—and does not—change
After cleaning, the robot transfers debris from its onboard bin into the station’s larger bag or container. That reduces the frequency of emptying the small robot bin, but it does not mean the system runs maintenance-free. You may still need to empty or replace the dock’s collection container and clean or replace filters, brushes, mop pads, tanks, or trays, depending on the model.
Capacity and emptying intervals depend on dock design and household conditions. ECOVACS says its own robot-vacuum systems can hold 30–90 days of debris between dock emptying, qualified by household size and conditions; this is manufacturer guidance, not a guarantee for the category. See ECOVACS’ self-empty robot vacuum guidance. A home with shedding pets, frequent cleaning, or substantial debris may need attention sooner.

Choose between a bagged and bagless dock
These designs shift the work in different ways. Neither approach is universal across brands, so check the specific station rather than inferring its design from the category name.
| Dock type | What to expect | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Bagged | Debris collects in a replaceable bag. You need compatible replacement bags, a recurring consumable. | Confirm the full robot or station model against the manufacturer’s compatibility listing before buying bags. eufy says its official bags are single-use and model-specific: eufy’s bag compatibility guide. |
| Bagless | The dock collects debris in a container that must be emptied and handled. It avoids replacement bags, but not dock upkeep. | Check how the container is removed and emptied. Shark describes its own base as bagless; that does not mean all robot-vacuum docks use this design: Shark’s robot-vacuum cleaning guidance. |
For eufy products, its 2026 guide gives a typical dust-bag life of 30–75 days, depending on pets, carpet, and cleaning frequency. That is guidance for eufy products, not a general estimate for other brands or homes.
Separate navigation from obstacle avoidance
Navigation helps a robot map rooms and plan where to clean; obstacle avoidance is about detecting and steering around objects in its path. A robot can map a floor plan without being especially good at avoiding clutter. If floors are often strewn with cables, toys, or other obstacles, compare dedicated avoidance features as well as mapping and room coverage.

ECOVACS describes LiDAR, camera-based, and simpler bump-and-move navigation, and separately discusses cliff sensors and app no-go zones. No-go zones let you mark areas to avoid; cliff sensors help detect drops such as stairs. These are different functions, so check which the exact model offers. See ECOVACS’ robot vacuum buying guide.
Decide whether mopping and a full-service dock are worth the trade-offs
A robot that vacuums and mops may suit a home with substantial hard flooring, but mixed floors need careful handling. Check for mop lifting or removal, carpet detection, and the dock’s mop-washing and drying functions if offered. These features can reduce hands-on mop care or help protect rugs, but they add purchase cost, station footprint, and cleaning tasks such as maintaining tanks and trays. The Vacuum Wars guide discusses these trade-offs; it does not establish a universally best configuration.

- UP TO 75 DAYS HANDS-FREE CLEANING. Dirt and dust stay gone because it empties into the AutoEmpty dock with a bag that traps 99% of allergens as small as 0.7 microns- That means no mess or cloud of dust when you empty it- Just drop the used bag into the trash and put a new one in the base.
- DEVOURS DIRT WITH 70X MORE POWER-LIFTING SUCTION. 3-Stage Cleaning includes 70X more power-lifting suction*, a Multi-Surface brush, and Edge-Sweeping brush to devour dirt and dust bunnies and leave floors barefoot clean *As compared to Roomba 600 series robots
- SUPER-SMART MAPPING AND NAVIGATION. ClearView LiDAR quickly maps your home to maximize coverage and provide a precise clean while steering smoothly around obstacles and specialized sensors prevent falling down stairs.
- FULLY CUSTOM & TARGETED CLEANING. Schedule and target rooms based on your daily routine and adjust the number of cleaning passes and levels of suction power.
- EASY-TO-USE ROOMBA HOME APP. Simply tap to set a custom clean, get time estimates, check on the filter life, or create keep-out zones to avoid specific areas.
Budget for upkeep and verify parts by model
Self-emptying reduces one routine chore; it does not remove consumables or service needs. Check the exact model’s manual and parts listing for compatible bags, filters, brushes, and mop pads, and follow its maintenance intervals. Do not assume a part fits because it looks similar to one for another robot.
As examples of brand-specific guidance, eufy’s 2026 schedule suggests replacing filters every 2–3 months, the rolling brush about every 6 months, and mop pads every 3–6 months, with intervals depending on use and debris. These are not universal service intervals. Consult eufy’s robot vacuum maintenance guidance and the manual for your exact model.
Check fit before you buy
- Measure low spaces: Compare the robot’s published height with the clearance beneath furniture you want it to clean.
- Check thresholds: Look up the model’s stated threshold-crossing capability and compare it with the transitions in your home. Confirm details in the manual; do not assume every robot crosses the same obstacles.
- Measure the dock location: Allow for the station’s dimensions and enough access to remove its bag or container and service any tanks or trays.
- Verify the exact parts: Match replacement bags and other accessories to the full robot or station model on the manufacturer’s compatibility page.
These checks help rule out a model that cannot reach important areas or whose dock is awkward to maintain. The Vacuum Wars buying guide and ECOVACS guidance both emphasize checking fit and model features against the home.
A practical shortlist checklist
- Does its brush design suit your carpet, hard floors, and hair load?
- Is the dock bagged or bagless, and are you comfortable with its emptying or replacement routine?
- Does its navigation provide the mapping and room coverage you need, and does it have obstacle avoidance if your floors are cluttered?
- If it mops, can it protect rugs and handle mixed flooring in the way your home requires?
- Will the robot clear furniture and cross your thresholds, and can the dock fit in an accessible spot?
- Can you identify compatible replacement parts and accept the model-specific maintenance schedule?
There is no single best model for an unspecified budget, floor plan, country, or cleaning priority. Prices, specifications, availability, and compatible consumables can change, so verify current details on the manufacturer’s page and in the exact model’s manual before purchase.
