Before replacing or upgrading a server’s baseboard management controller (BMC), identify the exact server and controller, confirm the OEM-approved hardware or firmware procedure, and make a recoverable copy of supported settings. Plan for a temporary loss of out-of-band access, then verify identity, access, licensing, networking, and management functions after the work. A BMC is not automatically interchangeable just because another controller supports the same standard interface.
Start with the exact server and controller
Record the server manufacturer, model and generation, service tag or serial number, relevant system-board revision, BMC type, installed BMC firmware, and applicable licenses. Also list the management features in use, such as remote console, virtual media, monitoring integrations, or power control. These details determine which parts, firmware packages, and service procedures apply.

Check the OEM service manual, parts information, compatibility guidance, and firmware release notes for that specific system. Establish whether the BMC is a separate field-replaceable module, an embedded component, or part of the system board. A controller that looks similar—or exposes Redfish—does not thereby become a compatible replacement. DMTF Redfish defines a management interface and data model; it does not prescribe interchangeable hardware or identical implementation features. DMTF Redfish standards

Determine what the replacement involves
If the BMC is integrated into the system board, replacing it may mean a board replacement and a separate identity-and-configuration recovery process. Do not assume that a saved profile will restore every item automatically. For example, Dell’s documented system-board restoration procedure uses a backup image from the same server and includes Service Tag restoration. - REMOTE BIOS/UEFI ACCESS — CONTROL A DEAD MACHINE: Reach any computer at the BIOS/UEFI level from your web browser, even when the OS is frozen, crashed, or powered off. Full 1080p @ 60Hz HDMI capture with keyboard, video, and mouse — under 100ms latency for control that feels like sitting at the machine.
- BUILT FOR HOMELAB, PROXMOX & HEADLESS SERVERS: The out-of-band access your homelab, Proxmox host, or headless server has been missing — install an OS via BIOS, reboot a hung machine, or manage it remotely with no monitor attached. A capable alternative to enterprise IPMI/BMC for hardware that doesn't have it.
- POE BUILT IN + FULL-SIZE HDMI — ONE CABLE, NO ADAPTERS: PoE is standard, so a single Ethernet cable delivers power and network — no wall wart, no splitter. Full-size HDMI means no fragile mini-HDMI dongle to lose. Drop it in a rack and it just works.
- OPEN-SOURCE & AUDITABLE — SECURITY YOU CAN VERIFY: Fully open-source Rust firmware (GPL) you can inspect yourself on GitHub — no black box, and no software agent on the machine you're managing. On your own network it's a direct web console with no account required. Reach it from outside through the included free relay — no VPN to configure, no subscription. FCC, CE, and RoHS certified.
- NO SUBSCRIPTION, WORKS WITH EVERYTHING: Wake-on-LAN, remote power control (optional ATX expansion board), 32GB eMMC storage, ISO/virtual-media mount, and an on-device touchscreen. No VPN required — and if you already run Tailscale, it works out of the box (free firmware update). One-time purchase, no fees. OS-independent — Windows, Linux, macOS, Raspberry Pi.
Check the specific procedure for how the replacement affects the Service Tag or serial identity, asset information, licenses, and settings. Dell documents Easy Restore for covered iDRAC9 systems, but its behavior is model-specific: it compares Service Tags and applies settings to matching components in the same locations or slots. The documented restore can include Service Tag, Asset Tag, license data, UEFI diagnostics, and BIOS, iDRAC, and NIC settings; it does not back up firmware images, vFlash data, or add-in-card data. Back up configuration and recovery details
Before service, export the controller or server profile using the OEM-supported method, if the target platform supports it. DMTF’s Redfish schema includes a Replacement export type for configuration needed for system replacement, but the target service determines whether that operation is available and what it contains. Schema support alone does not establish a universal backup or restore workflow. DMTF Redfish resource dictionary

- AMD socket sTR5 supports up to 96-core CPUs: Ready for AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7000 WX-Series Processors.
- Ultrafast connectivity:Seven PCIe 5.0 x16 slots, dual 10 Gb LAN ports, four M.2 slots, two rear USB4 40Gbps Type-C and SlimSAS NVMe support.
- CPU and memory overclocking: Support for up to 2TB ECC R-DIMM DDR5 memory modules (1DPC)
- Robust power and thermal design: 32 power stages with two 8-pin power connectors for the CPU, massive VRM cooling, chipset and M.2 heatsinks with active fans, and M.2 thermal pad.
- PCIe Q-release Slim: Remove the graphics card by directly pulling it up, instead of pressing a PCIe latch.
Keep the backup somewhere accessible when the server or controller is unavailable, and protect it as sensitive configuration data. Separately record any information the export omits, using your approved secure process. Depending on the platform and workflow, that may include network settings, recovery credentials, licenses, certificates, logs, or attached-device settings. Confirm the omissions in the OEM documentation rather than assuming the export is complete.

Check firmware compatibility and update sequence
For an upgrade, obtain the package from the server OEM’s official support channel and confirm it is intended for the exact server and controller generation. Read the package readme, release notes, and change history before starting. Check for a minimum starting version, required intermediate releases, dependencies on BIOS/UEFI or other firmware, known issues, rollback or downgrade limits, and activation steps.
Follow the platform’s specified update order and restart requirements. Lenovo warns that installing incorrect firmware can cause server malfunction; its XClarity Controller documentation directs users to the update readme and change history and describes restart and firmware-order considerations for covered systems. Lenovo: updating XClarity Controller 3 firmware
Record the current firmware version and configuration before the change. Determine whether the BMC reboots independently or the host must restart, and schedule for a possible interruption to remote management. Do not interrupt power or reset the controller during an update unless the OEM procedure specifically directs it.

A BMC replacement, board swap, firmware activation, or configuration restore can disrupt remote management. Arrange a maintenance window and make a recovery path available: local console or physical access where practical, an authorized person able to reach the server, and a way to recover if the management address, network settings, or credentials change. Ensure the backup and any required media or network share remain accessible during the work.
Validate the server after the change
After replacement or upgrade, compare the actual state with your pre-change record and confirm that the management plane works—not merely that the host has booted.
- Confirm server and controller identity, installed firmware version, and update or restoration status.
- Verify management-network reachability, VLAN and addressing, administrator access, users, and access controls.
- Check applicable licenses and the features they enable.
- Confirm sensor inventory, event visibility and delivery, and monitoring integrations.
- Test remote power operations and, where used, remote console and virtual media.
- Check the APIs and orchestration integrations your environment relies on, and review logs for update, restoration, or hardware errors.
- Identify settings that were not restored and recover them through the documented process; record the final configuration.
Redfish implementations can include optional elements and OEM extensions, so support for the standard does not guarantee identical features between controllers. Validate the actual service and the functions your environment depends on. DMTF Redfish standards
These checks support planning; they do not replace the service manual or firmware instructions for the exact server. iDRAC and XClarity are examples, and procedures, supported features, and license rules vary by platform.
