Choose a router by checking your internet provider’s equipment requirements, the shape of your home, your devices, and the ports and security features you need—not by the biggest speed number on the box. A higher-end model is only useful when your internet plan, connected devices, and layout can take advantage of it.
Start with your internet service and provider equipment
Before choosing a router, find out how your internet service reaches your home and whether your provider requires its own gateway. Some fiber and satellite services require provider equipment. You may still be able to add a separate router, with the gateway’s Wi-Fi disabled or the gateway set to bridge mode, if the provider supports that arrangement. Check the provider’s instructions before buying; equipment compatibility and setup options vary. Consumer Reports’ router guide discusses these equipment considerations.

Also check whether you rent equipment from your provider and what the rental costs. Consumer Reports’ 2025 guide gives roughly $10 to $15 per month as an illustrative rental range, not a current quote for any particular provider or market. Compare the cost over the period you expect to keep your router, and confirm with your provider whether you can use your own equipment.

A single router is often a sensible starting point for a smaller home or apartment with a straightforward, single-floor layout. Consumer Reports says a traditional router is often sufficient for homes of roughly 2,000 square feet or less, especially on one floor; that is general editorial guidance, not a guarantee that a router will cover every home of that size.

When a single router may be enough
- Your home is relatively compact and you can place the router near the center of the area where you use Wi-Fi.
- You do not have persistent weak-signal areas in distant rooms.
- Your layout is open and does not require signals to pass through many floors or dense obstructions.
When to consider mesh Wi-Fi
A mesh system is worth considering for a larger or multistory home, an irregular layout, or known dead zones. It uses multiple units to extend coverage, but no system’s advertised coverage figure guarantees performance in your specific home. Walls, floors, metal, plumbing, appliances, and water can interfere with wireless signals. Placement and the building itself matter as much as the square footage printed on a product page. Consumer Reports covers these trade-offs in its buying guide.
Match Wi-Fi generation and frequency bands to your devices
Wi-Fi 6 is also known as 802.11ax; Wi-Fi 6E as 802.11axe; and Wi-Fi 7 as 802.11be. Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 can use the 6 GHz band, but not every Wi-Fi 7 router includes 6 GHz. Check the specifications for the exact model and region rather than assuming the generation name tells you which bands it has.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.

- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Your devices matter, too. Older phones, computers, and smart-home products can generally connect to newer routers, but they do not gain the full benefits of a newer Wi-Fi standard simply by using one. If most of your devices are older, paying extra for features they cannot use may not improve your everyday connection. ASUS’s August 13, 2026 guide describes router categories such as gaming, mesh, and travel models; it is manufacturer guidance about its own product categories, not independent comparative testing. Wi-Fi generation also does not guarantee a particular speed throughout your home. The service plan, router ports, client capabilities, distance, and obstacles all affect the result. Choose for the connection and devices you actually have, with a reasonable allowance for upgrades you expect to make.

Use internet speed tiers as planning guidance, not requirements
Consumer Reports’ 2025 guide offers these broad internet-speed planning tiers. They are recommendations, not universal minimums: actual needs depend on household activity, the number of people using the connection at once, and the demands of their devices.
| Household or use case | Consumer Reports’ suggested tier | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Two to four people | 100–200 Mbps | A broad planning suggestion, not a guarantee that every household’s needs will fit this tier. |
| Family | 300–500 Mbps | A suggested tier; simultaneous use and household activities affect what is sufficient. |
| Larger household or power users | 1,000+ Mbps | A suggested tier for heavier demands, not a router requirement for every large household. |
These figures concern the internet plan, not a promise of Wi-Fi speed in every room. A fast plan can be limited by a router’s WAN port, a device’s Wi-Fi capabilities, or the signal path between router and device.

Check WAN and LAN ports before buying
The WAN port connects the router to your modem or provider gateway. If your internet plan is faster than 1 Gbps, a router with only a 1 Gbps WAN port can bottleneck the connection; look for a multi-gig WAN port if you want the router to support a faster-than-gigabit service. Confirm the speed rating of the exact port, not just the router’s combined advertised wireless speed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsLAN ports connect wired devices such as desktop PCs or network storage. Check both how many ports you need and their speed ratings. Multi-gig LAN can be useful when wired devices support those speeds. If you need additional wired connections, an unmanaged Ethernet switch can add LAN ports, provided the router and connected equipment meet your speed needs.

Consider security support and device compatibility
WPA3 is a useful security feature to look for, but support differs by router model and older client devices may not support it. ASUS Support advises checking client compatibility before enabling WPA3: “If you are sure you want to use WPA3, please first check whether your wireless devices also support WPA3.” The advice appears in its WPA3 FAQ, last updated April 23, 2025. Check ASUS’s WPA3 compatibility guidance.
Look beyond the Wi-Fi security mode when assessing a router. Check the manufacturer’s stated firmware update policy and security support for the particular model. A router’s security features can help protect a network, but no router makes a home network invulnerable.
Account for subscriptions and ownership costs
Some routers include security, parental-control, or other management features that require a subscription. Before choosing a model, check which features are included, which require payment, whether a free trial renews automatically, and what happens to the features when the trial ends. Consumer Reports’ 2025 guide describes security subscriptions as often costing $50 to $100 per year; this is an illustrative range, not a current price for a specific product or plan. Verify current fees and renewal terms directly with the manufacturer.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteCompare the total cost over the time you plan to keep the equipment: purchase price, any provider rental you can avoid, and subscriptions you would actually use. A cheaper router can cost more over time if an essential feature is paid, while a more expensive model may be unnecessary if your devices and layout do not benefit from its extras.
A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Confirm provider requirements. Ask whether you must keep a provider gateway and whether it supports bridge mode or disabling its Wi-Fi when you add your own router.
- Assess the layout. Consider floors, walls, obstructions, router placement, and any rooms with weak coverage. Decide whether one unit is plausible or mesh is worth considering.
- List your devices and their capabilities. Check which Wi-Fi generations and security modes your most important devices support, and whether you expect to replace them soon.
- Check the internet plan and ports. Match the WAN port to your service speed, then count wired devices and check the LAN port speeds you need.
- Review security and ongoing fees. Verify update support, WPA3 compatibility, what controls are included, and any subscription renewal terms.
- Compare total ownership cost. Include the router, provider equipment rental if applicable, and subscriptions you intend to keep.
Use these checks to narrow the choice before comparing specific models. For example, a compact one-floor home with older devices may not benefit from paying for every new Wi-Fi feature, while a multistory home with a faster-than-gigabit plan needs attention to both coverage design and WAN-port speed.
