Choose Survival if you want to gather resources, craft, explore, and handle health, hunger, and hostile mobs. Choose Creative if you want unlimited resources, flight, and room to build without ordinary survival pressures. If you are unsure, try both: the choice is about the kind of play you want, not a permanent commitment.
How Survival and Creative differ
| What matters | Survival | Creative |
|---|---|---|
| Resources | Gather materials and craft the items you need. | Access unlimited resources and build without gathering materials first. |
| Risk and needs | Manage health and hunger; hostile mobs can attack, especially at night. | No ordinary health, hunger, or resource concerns. |
| Building and breaking | Breaking blocks takes time and may require the right tool. | Break blocks instantly and build without the same material-gathering interruptions. |
| Movement | Movement is affected by gravity. | Fly around the world. |
| Progression | Exploration, crafting, and gaining experience are part of the experience. | Focus on construction, experimentation, or exploring without ordinary survival pressure. |
These are the core distinctions in Minecraft’s official game-mode overview and its Help article on game modes. Both modes allow exploration; they differ in how much preparation, risk, and resource gathering shape it.

Which mode should a beginner choose?
Pick Survival for challenge and a sense of progress
Survival suits you if earning materials, learning recipes, preparing for danger, and making exploration feel consequential sounds fun. For a first session, Minecraft’s beginner guide recommends finding food and shelter and staying safe from nighttime monsters. Treat that as a helpful starting point rather than a mandatory checklist: you can decide what to do next as you learn.
Pick Creative to build or experiment immediately
Creative is a better fit if you already have a design in mind, want to test layouts, or would rather explore and construct than spend time gathering materials. Flight and instant block breaking make it easier to move around a project and revise it quickly.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
Try both if you have no preference yet
The modes suit different goals, and trying one does not mean you must stick with it. Minecraft’s comparison puts it plainly: “The best thing is: you don’t need to choose. You can play both!” The comparison, written by Sophie Austin and published January 13, 2022, also presents mode choice as a personal preference rather than a question with one objectively correct answer.
How to choose based on what you want to do
- You want to build a large project without collecting every block: start in Creative.
- You want each building material to take effort to obtain: start in Survival.
- You want to explore without managing hunger or defending yourself from hostile mobs: start in Creative.
- You want nighttime and preparation to affect your plans: start in Survival.
- You want both freedom and a challenge: try each mode and see which pace you prefer.
Controls, achievements, and age ratings
Controls depend on your device
Keyboard-and-mouse, controller, and touchscreen controls differ, and controls can be customized. For example, Minecraft’s controls guide describes double-tapping Space to begin flying in Creative on keyboard; controller and touch use their own jump inputs. Check the instructions for your device rather than assuming one button mapping applies everywhere.

Achievements and trophies
Minecraft’s official overview says achievements and trophies are available only in Survival mode. If earning them matters to you, check the current rules for your edition and world configuration before starting; availability can depend on those details.
