A foldable phone is worth considering when you will regularly use its larger unfolded screen or smaller folded footprint. A flip-style model is mainly about folding down to a more compact shape; a book-style model opens into a larger workspace for reading, media, and using two apps side by side. The trade-offs are higher cost, extra care for the flexible display and hinge, and the need to check ordinary phone features just as carefully as the fold.
Decide which foldable shape fits your routine
Flip-style: a smaller folded footprint
A flip folds down to a shorter, more pocketable shape. Its cover screen may handle quick interactions, and the hinge can let the phone stand at an angle for hands-free camera use. Consider how often you would actually use those functions, and whether the outer screen is practical for the tasks you do most. Samsung’s buying guide describes the format’s intended benefits, but those benefits depend on your habits.

Book-style: a larger screen when opened
A book-style phone unfolds into a larger display suited to reading, media, multitasking, or work that benefits from seeing more at once. For scale, Samsung Canada lists a 7.6-inch display and 201 g weight for the Galaxy Z Fold8; these are specifications for that model, not foldable-phone averages. Compare the unfolded screen with the dimensions and weight you will carry every day, and assess whether the outside screen remains comfortable for routine use.

Compare the whole phone, not just the hinge
A foldable still needs to work as your everyday phone. Use the same checklist for each candidate and for a conventional flagship at a similar storage tier.

- THE BATTERY YOU’VE BEEN WAITING FOR: It’s the battery you’ve been wanting in a foldable cell phone. Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra packs a powerful ultra-sized⁴ battery in an ultra-slim design. Plus, with Super Fast Charging 2.0⁵, charge up faster than ever before.
- Handling: Compare folded width and thickness, weight, opening feel, and how well the cover screen handles your common tasks.
- Displays: Look at inner-screen size and aspect ratio, crease visibility, reflections, and how apps scale. If possible, try a showroom unit rather than judging from screen diagonals alone.
- Battery and charging: Capacity alone does not predict endurance. Compare independent results from similar tests, and consider charging speed alongside battery life.
- Cameras: Check the actual lenses and useful zoom ranges, not just headline megapixel counts. A folding phone’s camera angles may be useful, but do not assume they compensate for a missing lens.
- Software and support: Check multitasking, cover-screen behavior, app compatibility, update commitments, local warranty terms, authorized service, and repair costs.
- Total price: Compare current local prices and storage configurations with a conventional flagship. Add any necessary model-specific accessories and the cost and conditions of a protection plan you are considering.
One current model illustrates the trade-offs
Tom’s Guide’s September 30, 2026 review lists the Galaxy Z Fold8 at a starting price of $1,899 in the US for the 256 GB configuration, with launch-market prices of £1,699 in the UK and AU$2,699 in Australia. These are market-specific prices that may change, not a standard price for foldables. In its 5G web-surfing battery test, Tom’s Guide recorded 12 hours 19 minutes for the Fold8; the result belongs to that publication’s test method and is not a prediction for every owner. The review also reported 70% charge after 30 minutes in its test setup, a crease less visible than before but still perceptible by touch, no telephoto lens in the reviewed configuration, and an IP48 rating with limited dust resistance. Read the Tom’s Guide review for the complete model-specific context.
Understand display care, dust and water limits
Flexible inner displays and hinges call for care. Samsung’s instructions for Galaxy foldables advise against sharp objects, excessive pressure, or folding the phone with objects such as cards, coins, or keys between the screens. Samsung also says not to remove the factory inner-screen film or install unapproved films and stickers, which can damage the device or affect sensors. These are Samsung instructions; follow the manufacturer’s guidance for any other brand or model. Samsung’s foldable-care guidance provides the device-specific cautions.

Check the exact model’s ingress rating rather than assuming all foldables have the same protection. Samsung describes IP48 Galaxy models as having limited dust protection, not as fully dust-proof. Its support guidance also explains that water resistance reflects laboratory conditions and can diminish over time; it does not recommend beach or pool use. An IP rating should not be read as permission to expose a phone to every kind of dust or water.
Check repair routes, warranty and accessories before purchase
Before paying, find out where the specific model can be serviced in your country and what the warranty covers. Ask for local screen and hinge repair estimates and read the exclusions, deductibles, and claim process for any protection plan. There is no single repair price or universal warranty outcome established across markets and models, so use the terms for the exact handset and region.

Choose a case made for the exact foldable model. Samsung says foldable cases are available and commonly use two parts to fit the device’s construction. A suitable case is an accessory, not a guarantee against screen, hinge, or impact damage. Avoid assuming another model’s case or film will fit; for Samsung foldables, do not add an unapproved inner-screen film. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series FAQ covers case considerations.

Write down the recurring task the fold is meant to improve: carrying a smaller folded phone, reading on a larger screen, using two apps together, or setting up a hands-free camera angle. Then compare how often that task comes up with the price premium, the phone’s everyday handling, any feature compromises, and the local cost and availability of repairs. If the fold solves a frequent problem and the rest of the phone meets your needs, the extra cost may make sense. If the benefit is occasional while price, weight, camera choices, or care requirements are drawbacks, a conventional phone is likely the more practical purchase.
