Choose the Halo game first, then choose the hardware. Halo Infinite and Halo: The Master Chief Collection (MCC) run on both Xbox and Windows PC, but their editions, PC requirements, online-access rules and performance targets differ. Halo Infinite multiplayer is free on Xbox and PC; its Campaign is a separate purchase or may be included with some Game Pass memberships. MCC is a separate collection with its own requirements and console enhancements.
If you want a straightforward console setup, compare Xbox Series S and Series X with the resolution and refresh rate of your display. If you already own a Windows PC, compare its processor, graphics card, VRAM, memory, operating system and SSD with the requirements for the specific Halo game. Do not buy based on the franchise name alone.

Start by identifying the Halo game you actually want
“Halo” is a franchise, not a single software product. The two clearest buying examples are Halo Infinite and Halo: The Master Chief Collection. They overlap in platform support, but they are not interchangeable when you are checking editions, subscriptions or PC hardware.

Halo Infinite has two separate purchasing decisions:
- Multiplayer: free-to-play on PC and Xbox. Online multiplayer does not require an active Game Pass subscription.
- Campaign: a separate paid listing, or access through some Game Pass memberships. The exact catalog and terms can change, so check the current storefront and membership listing before budgeting.
Halo: The Master Chief Collection
MCC is a collection rather than one standalone campaign. Halo Support documents installation on Xbox consoles and on PC through Steam, the Microsoft Store or the Xbox PC app. Its PC requirements are separate from Halo Infinite’s, so a computer that meets Infinite’s published tier should not automatically be assumed to meet every MCC title or configuration.
Before comparing a console with a PC, write down the exact game, edition and mode you intend to play. A purchase aimed at Infinite multiplayer may have very different storage and subscription implications from a purchase aimed at the full MCC campaign collection.

| Platform | Halo Infinite | Halo: The Master Chief Collection | What to verify before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox One | Supported | Supported | Confirm the edition and whether you need Campaign, multiplayer or both. |
| Xbox Series S | Supported | Supported | Match the console’s target resolution with your display; MCC’s cited enhancement target is 1080p at 60 or 120Hz in specified modes. |
| Xbox Series X | Supported | Supported | For supported modes, Xbox cites up to 4K and 120 FPS for Infinite; MCC’s cited enhancement target is 4K at 60 or 120Hz in specified modes. |
| Windows PC | Supported on Windows 10/11, subject to the published hardware requirements | Supported through Steam, Microsoft Store or the Xbox PC app, with separate requirements | Check CPU, GPU, VRAM, RAM, operating-system version, storage and drivers for the exact game. |
Support does not mean identical image quality or frame rate on every device. Resolution, refresh rate and available modes depend on the game, hardware, display and—in some cases—the map or mode being played.
Xbox Series S or Series X: what the choice means for Halo
Series S: the 1080p-oriented route
Series S supports both Halo Infinite and MCC. Halo Support’s MCC enhancement information lists 1080p at 60 or 120Hz for the specified modes on Series S. That makes the console a sensible fit when your display is 1080p or when you value a simple, lower-resolution setup over a 4K target.
Do not treat the MCC figure as a guarantee for every Halo game, every mode or every display. It applies to the modes described on the enhancement page. Before buying, check the current console specification, storage configuration and the space required by the games you plan to install; current prices and capacities were not established in the available official material.
Series X: the higher-resolution route
Series X supports Infinite and MCC. Xbox says Halo Infinite can reach up to 120 FPS and 4K on Series X and compatible PCs, but only across supported maps and modes. A compatible TV or monitor is also required. MCC’s enhancement information lists 4K at 60 or 120Hz in its specified single-player and two-player split-screen modes.
Series X is therefore the more appropriate comparison if you already own a 4K display or specifically want the option of higher-resolution output. “Up to” is important: it is not a promise that every map, mode or scene will run at 4K and 120 FPS simultaneously.
What both consoles simplify
- The operating system, drivers and graphics settings are managed for you.
- You can play the named games without assembling or upgrading PC components.
- You still need to select the correct game purchase and understand multiplayer-access rules.
- Your TV or monitor must support the resolution and refresh rate you want to use.
Windows PC: check the exact hardware before buying
A PC is the flexible route, but it transfers compatibility work to you. Compare the computer’s actual components—not just a product’s marketing name—with the official requirements for the game you want. Halo Support’s Halo Infinite requirements page, updated December 12, 2024, lists the following tiers.
Rank #2
- What's in the box: Xbox Series S 512GB console, 1 Xbox Wireless Controller, High Speed HDMI cable.
- CPU: 8X Cores @ 3.6 GHz (3.4 GHz w/SMT) Custom Zen 2 CPU; GPU: 4 TFLOPS, 20 CUs @1.565 GHz Custom RDNA 2 GPU; SOC Die Size: 197.05 mm2.

- Gaming Resolution: 1440p; Performance Target: Up to 120 FP.
- HDMI Features: Auto Low Latency Mode, HDMI Variable Refresh Rate, AMD FreeSync.
| Component | Minimum tier | High (Recommended) tier |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 RS5 x64 | The published tier is for Halo Infinite; keep Windows and drivers current. |
| Processor | AMD Ryzen 5 1600 or Intel Core i5-4440 | AMD Ryzen 7 3700X or Intel Core i7-9700K |
| Graphics card | AMD Radeon RX 570 or Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti | AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT or Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 |

| System memory | 8 GB or more RAM | 16 GB or more RAM |
| Storage | 50 GB or more on an SSD | 50 GB or more on an SSD |
The minimum tier is a compatibility floor, not a promise of a particular frame rate, resolution or graphics preset. The High tier is the published recommended target, not a universal benchmark for every map, update, display or background workload. Driver and software guidance can change, so recheck the official Halo Support page immediately before buying parts or a new computer.
How to check an existing Windows PC
- Open Settings > System > About and record the processor model and installed RAM.
- Open Settings > System > About > Windows specifications and confirm that the operating system is a supported 64-bit Windows release. Infinite’s listed minimum is Windows 10 RS5 x64.
- Open Task Manager > Performance and select GPU to identify the graphics-card model and dedicated GPU memory. A generic label such as “integrated graphics” is not enough for a requirements comparison.
- Open File Explorer > This PC and verify that the intended installation drive is an SSD with at least 50 GB available for Infinite. Leave additional headroom for updates and other games.
- Compare each model and capacity with the official table. If one component is below the minimum, do not assume that a stronger component elsewhere will compensate.
Why the PC route can cost more than the game
Meeting a requirement may involve more than purchasing the game. A PC upgrade can require a graphics card, a power supply, more RAM, an SSD or a newer operating-system installation. The available official material does not establish current hardware prices, performance benchmarks or a value ranking, so calculate the complete upgrade cost rather than comparing only the game price with a console price.

Budgeting errors usually happen when buyers treat “Halo Infinite” as one purchase. The multiplayer and Campaign are separate.
Multiplayer
Halo Support states: “Halo Infinite multiplayer is free-to-play and available on PC and Xbox consoles.” On Xbox and PC, online multiplayer does not require an active Game Pass subscription. You still need the relevant platform account and an internet connection, and you should check the current store page for installation details.
Campaign
Campaign is sold separately or may be included in certain Game Pass memberships. Membership catalogs and terms can change, so verify the listing at the time you buy. Do not purchase a subscription on the assumption that every Halo Infinite component is included indefinitely.
Xbox One compatibility
Halo Infinite is listed for Xbox One as well as Series X|S. If you already own an Xbox One, check the current listing for the edition and available features instead of replacing the console solely because a newer model exists. The newer Series consoles offer the cited enhancement modes, but those modes are not a blanket specification for Xbox One.
MCC installation and online-access rules
Where MCC can be installed
Halo Support documents MCC on Xbox consoles and on PC through Steam, the Microsoft Store or the Xbox PC app. Choose the storefront that fits your existing library and account, then confirm the edition and included games before completing the purchase.
Console online play
The official MCC requirements page says Xbox-console online play requires an Xbox network account and an active Game Pass subscription. That requirement is distinct from Halo Infinite’s free-to-play multiplayer rule; do not carry one game’s policy over to the other.
PC online play
PC requirements differ by storefront. The official guidance identifies Steam play without an active Xbox subscription, while other PC access paths can have different account or service requirements. Verify the current requirements page for the storefront you plan to use.

Resolution, refresh rate and the “120 FPS” question
High-refresh Halo play requires a complete chain: a game mode that supports the target, hardware capable of rendering it, and a TV or monitor that can display it. Xbox’s Infinite statement is “up to 120 FPS and 4K” on Series X and compatible PCs across supported maps and modes, with a compatible display required.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- 4K describes output resolution, not guaranteed frame rate.
- 120 FPS describes a possible frame-rate target, not a result delivered in every scene.
- Supported maps and modes limit where the cited maximum applies.
- Display compatibility matters: a 120-Hz-capable game setup cannot show 120 frames per second on a 60-Hz panel.
For MCC, Halo Support lists Series X at 4K and Series S at 1080p, each at 60 or 120Hz in the specified single-player and two-player split-screen modes. Those figures belong to the MCC enhancement description and should not be generalized to every Halo release or mode.
Storage, updates and display planning
Storage
Halo Infinite’s published PC tiers require a 50 GB SSD. Treat that as the minimum listed capacity for the installation, not the amount of free space your entire PC needs. Keep room for updates, operating-system files and other games. MCC has separate PC requirements and can represent a different storage decision because it is a collection.
Display
Choose the display after deciding whether your target is 1080p, 4K, 60Hz or 120Hz. A 4K screen is useful only when the console, PC, game and selected mode support that output. Likewise, a high-refresh display does not create a 120-FPS mode if the game or hardware cannot provide it.
Drivers and software
PC graphics drivers and software guidance can change after a requirements page is published. Install current drivers from the graphics-card manufacturer and revisit the official Halo requirements page before finalizing a purchase or troubleshooting a new build.
Recommended Free Tools
A practical buying process
- Name the game: choose Halo Infinite, MCC or another specific Halo title before comparing hardware.
- Name the mode: decide whether you need free Infinite multiplayer, Infinite Campaign, MCC campaigns, split-screen or online play.
- Check the platform list: confirm that your intended Xbox generation or Windows version is supported for that title.
- Separate the purchase from access: determine whether you need only Infinite multiplayer, a Campaign purchase, MCC or a membership catalog.
- Audit a PC component by component: compare CPU, GPU, VRAM, RAM, operating system and SSD with the exact official requirements.
- Set a display target: select 1080p or 4K and 60Hz or 120Hz, then verify that the chosen console or PC and the game mode support it.
- Check online rules: for MCC on Xbox, account for the active Game Pass requirement; for Infinite multiplayer, do not add a Game Pass charge that the free-to-play rule does not require.
- Recheck before checkout: storefront listings, membership catalogs, drivers, requirements and game updates can change.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistake: buying for the franchise instead of the title
A computer may satisfy Infinite’s published tier while still requiring a separate check for MCC. Keep a title-by-title checklist and do not use one game’s requirements as a substitute for another’s.
Mistake: assuming free multiplayer means every feature is free
Infinite multiplayer is free-to-play, but Campaign is separate or membership-dependent. Confirm which component you are purchasing.
Mistake: treating a maximum as a constant
“Up to 120 FPS and 4K” is limited to supported maps and modes and requires a compatible display. It is not a universal guarantee for every match.
Mistake: overlooking MCC’s console subscription rule
MCC online play on Xbox requires an Xbox network account and active Game Pass subscription under the cited official requirements. This is different from Infinite multiplayer.

Which route fits common buyer situations?
You want the simplest Halo setup
Choose a supported Xbox console, then match it to your display and the specific game. This avoids PC component matching and driver maintenance. Confirm whether your planned play is Infinite multiplayer, Infinite Campaign or MCC, because the purchase and online rules differ.
You own a 1080p display
Series S is the console route with MCC’s cited 1080p enhancement target in specified modes. A Windows PC can also be appropriate, but compare its components with the game’s requirements rather than assuming that a 1080p monitor makes any PC sufficient.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Series X or a suitably equipped PC gives you a path to the cited high-end modes. For Infinite, Xbox’s statement is limited to supported maps and modes and says a compatible TV or monitor is required. Confirm the display’s actual refresh-rate support and the game’s selected mode.
You already have a Windows gaming PC
Check the machine before buying a console. If it meets Infinite’s minimum or High tier, that tells you how it compares with the published requirement—not the exact frame rate you will receive. For MCC, consult its separate requirements for the storefront and configuration you intend to use.
You mainly want online MCC play
Decide between Xbox and PC first. Xbox-console online play has the cited account and active Game Pass requirement; Steam PC play is documented without an active Xbox subscription. Verify the current storefront rules before paying.
What the available specifications do—and do not—tell you
The official material establishes platform support, published PC requirements, selected MCC enhancement modes and Infinite’s maximum performance statement. It does not establish current console prices, current hardware prices, comparative value rankings, sales share, player counts or independent PC benchmarks. Those figures should not be inferred from the specifications.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use the specifications as a compatibility and planning framework. Your final result depends on the exact game, mode, update, hardware configuration, drivers and display. Recheck the official Halo Support and Xbox listings immediately before purchase, especially when buying a used console, upgrading a PC or relying on a membership catalog.
