BigBlueButton: the classroom-focused choice
BigBlueButton describes itself as an open-source web-conferencing system for online learning. Its documentation lists real-time audio and video, presentations, screen sharing, public and private chat, whiteboards, shared notes, polls, breakout rooms, recordings, and LMS integrations. It documents support for LTI 1.0 and use cases including tutoring and office hours, flipped classrooms, group collaboration, and full online classes. The project describes browser-based use and mobile browser access; mobile screen sharing is a limitation.

That makes BigBlueButton the strongest documented starting point here when participation and teaching activities matter as much as the live meeting. It does not, by itself, establish that every institution’s LMS setup, recording process, accessibility requirements, or expected room size will be covered: verify those against the release and deployment you plan to use.

Jitsi Meet: a lighter route to meetings
Jitsi Meet is a free, open-source video-conferencing project. Its official product page lists calls, desktop and presentation sharing, custom conference URLs, integrated chat, and document collaboration with Etherpad. The public service offers a no-account joining path, and the project also provides the option to run your own instance. Those are useful distinctions when guest access and control over deployment matter more than classroom-specific tools.
Jitsi’s product page describes encryption by default, but that statement should not be treated as a guarantee that every deployment has identical security properties. Public and self-hosted instances can differ in configuration and operation; assess the specific service and its settings for your security needs. As a qualitative comparison rather than a standardized test, LinuxLinks characterizes Jitsi as a fit for team presentations and smaller events, and BigBlueButton as stronger for recurring courses with learning analytics and prepared lesson material. What to verify before choosing
Teaching workflow and LMS fit
List the activities instructors actually need: breakout discussions, polls, shared notes, whiteboard work, recordings, or learning analytics. Then verify those functions in the current version and determine whether the LMS integration supports your platform and workflow. BigBlueButton documents LTI 1.0; do not infer that this guarantees compatibility with every LMS configuration.

Joining and guest friction
Test the path a student, customer, or guest will take to join: browser requirements, account prompts, meeting links, and mobile use. Jitsi’s no-account claim applies to its public offering; it should not automatically be assumed for every separately operated instance.
Hosting, capacity, and operations
Decide whether your organization will run the software or use a managed provider. Self-hosting can give you more operational control, but it also leaves you responsible for infrastructure, updates, maintenance, bandwidth, and support. Before a rollout, check current server requirements, recording workflow, accessibility needs, and capacity for your expected concurrent load. Do not rely on old or unsourced participant caps.

License, service, and total cost
An open-source license can remove a project-code license charge; it does not make a production service free. Hosting, administration, bandwidth, maintenance, and support may still require budget. BigBlueButton’s project materials describe a free-tier service from Blindside Networks for edX/Open edX and advise customers of official Open edX hosting partners to ask those partners about hosting. That specific offer does not establish general eligibility or a universally free service. Check availability, geography, capacity, support coverage, and pricing directly with any provider.

- Choose BigBlueButton as the first candidate if the replacement must support structured learning, and validate its current release, LMS connection, recordings, infrastructure requirements, and expected load.
- Choose Jitsi Meet as the first candidate if you mainly need browser-based calls or presentations, and test the join experience and configuration on the public service or the instance you intend to use.
- Investigate Nextcloud Talk or Apache OpenMeetings when they suit your broader platform plans, but confirm current capabilities and licensing from their project documentation before comparing them feature by feature.
- Assign an owner and budget for operations before deciding that an open-source option is a lower-cost replacement. Include hosting and ongoing administration, not only the software license.
Project documentation can change.
